Music and Lyrics: Chris Cornell
Shower in the dark day
Clean sparks diving down
Cool in the waterway
Where the baptized drown
Naked in the cold sun
Breathing life like fire
Thought I was the only one
But that was just a lie
Cause I heard it in the wind
And I saw it in the sky
And I thought it was the end
And I thought it was the 4th of July
Pale in the flare light
The scared light cracks & disappears
And leads the scorched ones here
And everywhere no one cares
The fire is spreading
And no one wants to speak about it
Down in the hole Jesus tries to crack a smile
Beneath another shovel load
And I heard it in the wind
And I saw it in the sky
And I thought it was the end
And I thought it was the 4th of July
Now I'm in control
Now I'm in the fall out
Once asleep but now I stand
And I still remember
Your sweet everything
Light a Roman candle
And hold it in your hand
Cause I heard it in the wind
And I saw it in the sky
And I thought it was the end
And I thought it was the 4th of July

So low & so fuckin sick.
CFCGBE tuning. Pretty much half Drop C & half standard.
Couldn’t have said it better myself
😔 yup
@@stolenhal0 whack
The first time I heard this song it changed my life...
+Tara Tanzer you're my spirit animal
Same. Remember exact time and place. Miss you, Chris. He was the epitome of Seattle. Not Kurt.
I know. I remember hearing this for the first time. i think you would really enjoy Machine Heads song "Violate" if you've not heard it yet
rocknrollboise never have I ever read a comment on CZcams better than this. He was a fucking legend. Gonna miss him forever
kurt was from aberdeen not seattle
i could be standing in a blazing hot desert and this song would still give me chills
Yes I agree awesome song Chris Cornell a awesome singer, sad he passed away May Chris Cornell RIP
To my mind, the greatest song ever written, and heavy in a way that blew my mind when I first heard it. Back then bands like Metallica, megadeath, Anthrax, they were like jackhammers tapping into the surface, and Chris came along with this song, tore the earth's crust open with both hands and stared into its molten core.
Well said, brother!
Absolutely couldn’t have put it any better than that love this doom metal song today and every day🤘🏻🤘🏻 Soundgarden for life 🇱🇷🇱🇷
so descriptive, vivid and accurate
If you like this sound, Crowbar's been doing this for 30+ years and I've been dreaming since forever they made a cover of this because it's exactly their sound
@@iaial0 thanks mate, I'll check it out.
“Down in a hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile, beneath another shovel load” Dammmmmmn
Chris was an underrated guitar player- he wrote all these songs on a guitar- then with- then pipes from the gods- sang his voice into our heads and hearts. Miss you every day Chris.
100% agree.
100000000% agree
i agree id say its the same with layne
I agree bit what a lot of people don't realize is that so many of his songs were written in tunings that haven't really been used before by anyone at least to write and record with. Bizaar tunings, really odd time signatures and tempo changes. Its hard to imagine the level of musicianship that he had. Almost otherworldly. He would here these songs playing "on the radio in my head" and write this way. He probably has written thousands of songs. All of that writing ability and talent he was blessed with and the voice on top of that. He has touched so many lives with his music it makes you think there must have been a purpose for him or some divine intervention. I wonder how a mortal human being could have that much cognitive function. Anyone agree?
Everything that has ever happened is underrated
Just discovered my love for grunge a little over a year ago and now it’s too late to see any of them in person. I hate being young
Welcome to my world. when I really thought SG was my favorite band and CC was my favorite singer, he passed away 6 months after that. Would always be my biggest musical sadness.
There is a new thriving music scene that is reappearing in today’s time. We should appreciate being young as we get easy access to old music and new music. If you need any recommendations for bands I can help with that.
I have loved grunge since I was 8 and I am now 37. Soundgarden was the only band that I was able to see with original singer. I was able to see Alice In Chains last year. I would love to have seen them all in the 90s! Keep your love for them and grunge alive and enjoy the many videos and concerts available online.
Same with me. I just fucking love Soundgarden and AIC. Admire the Seattle music scene a lot too. Found them 2 years ago. But alas, I was just born too late to see them.
It's not everyday that a live performance outshines the studio version, but holy shit does this ever take the cake.
the unUSEFULidiot I 100% agree!
Absolute masters of building and releasing tension
Fuckin love this comment! So true.
Greatest description
On Tighter & Tighter they’re show it in full power, great description of their essence
This is how good Superunknown is....even the lesser played songs like this one are gems. What a song.
Superunknown is without doubt the greatest album of all time.
I’d have to go with Dirt but superunknown is up there no doubt
@@puppetmaster8551 Superunknown being a little more upbeat edges it out for me. When I first came across it years ago I thought it was a greatest hits album. Same with STP’s Purple. AiC-wise it’s Facelift, probably for the same reason.
That's a distinction that can only be made by oneself. It is one of my favorites, though.
@@aazreaal Still the greatest, Purple by STP is a close second. What's your best of all time? You're right though, there are about 25 albums that are my 'greatest of all time'.
@@ShotOfSelf Man I can't freakin say. Superunknown is certainly up there, but I too have like 50 "greatest of all time" albums, like everyone lol. I find it's quite the anomaly when someone has a definitive favorite.
Lately though, I've added American Music Club's album Everclear to the list, but the staples have always been Tired Of Tomorrow by Nothing, Ghosts of The Great Highway by Sun Kil Moon, Power Corruption and Lies by New Order, uuuuuhhhhhhh Siamese Dream? Fuckin idk man. Maybe Red House Painters I (some people call it Rollercoaster) is up there too.
Yes I am aware none of those are anywhere close to Soundgarden besides the Smashing Pumpkins lol
I'll never forget the time I was having an awful trip on acid and was on the ground in thoughts loops of suicide and crying and this was the song that brought me out of it. Rest In Peace Chris Cornell.
Interestingly and typically for the universe to do this: According to Chris this song is from a time he took acid and had a bad trip turned good
That bass drum in the beginning changed the pattern in which my heart beats in
Sedento pra caralho ser humano sedento de paz
Só consigo ouvir assim do jeito mete marcha Cris
Já mais serão já mais serão
This is so low, but it makes me so high
1aquila1 omg i'm flying highhh!!!!
MAYBE ITS THE END? OR WAS IT JUST THE 4TH OF JULY?
And I thougt it was the end
This is a great version of this song. Slow, heavy, and Cornell's voice is on point. I saw them on this tour of 95, still probably the best concert that I have been to.
He was at his vocal peak then. I love when he can hit the highs like on the record album.
Man you're lucky!
another 4th of july ritual 2022
If they tuned down any lower the guitar would be unplayable. LOVE this song. Love the entire record.
It doesn't get any better than this song....What a monster guitar sound... Genius, an overused word fits here...
wow i never thought they'd be able to pull this off this well in a live version...
Seems like a real hard song to perform live
One of the best SG superunknown songs to me
I love that Gretsch
This and Head Down are my two favorite songs from SG
Its not hard to play but theres this weird turn around type variation in the verses that starts right after the intro that isnt hard to play once you understand it but its very weird to sing over. Every live version you can tell Chris was really focusing on the timing of the singing and thats why. Great song. If your also a guitar player watch a video of someone playing it or look up the tabs and youll see what im talking about. It took me awhile to figure out what the fuck they were playing lol its a very weird rhythm variation and with the CFCGBE tuning being so low on the first three strings it makes the variation really hard to hear cause it all kinda melts together. But that weird verse part really is the genius of Soundgarden. Any other band would have just written that part to have a typical cadence and chord progression. Its rarely a good idea to try and learn guitar ignoring music theory cause without acknowledging theory it will take a very long time to learn concepts that theory would help you understand much quicker. But in the few cases where musicians teach themselves and dont go out of their way to understand the theory of music songs like this are written. Theres a misconception that anyone can be a great guitarist without theory but its just not true. Even the great musicians who are known for not knowing any theory actually know a lot more than they realize they just came about understanding it in a different way( and it took them significantly longer to learn what little they did). So i guess i should have said, teaching yourself and avoiding learning music theory while also unconsciously absorbing some basic theory concepts is a good recipe for bands like this and songs like 4th of july which are very unconventional. Wow that was way too long of a comment......
check out the live version with Cornell's solo band, including Yogi Lonich and Corey McCormick. killlllllerrrrr
@@michaelinglis8516 I disagree completely. I would advise people that want to write to avoid theory wherever possible. Come up with your own language in your head, as you say: Just by teaching yourself you will understand large parts of theory, you will just have your own understanding and language, you wont know the official names of anything. Or the rules. Theory is the enemy of creativity IMO and it robs you of the joy of discovering new sounds on your own terms. Just my opinion and I would never expect to change the opinion of someone that believes the exact opposite.
I am a guitar teacher and when a pupil wants to learn theory I always ask them why and usually advise them against it. I see a pattern of people that learn theory, become obsessed with it and obsessed with learning and they nearly always forget to write any songs along the way because they're too drunk on music theory. It's wrong to generalise but I see that again and again.
Any players reading I would say: Write your own songs and your own rules. Practise thousands of hours and challenge yourself, learn different instruments, but dont learn theory.
PS. Also, just to annoy you even more, I find this fairly straight forward to sing and play over. Sorry :)
R.I.P CHRIS CORNELL You be very missed
Definitely
I love the fucken heaviness of this song ever since i bought the cassette, for all i have had die on me and chris, you are loved more than you will ever know🙏🏻
I feel like Chris is one of the only people that can speak to me in my depression and I didn't even know the dude.
Superunknown..but especially this song helped me to survive on hard episodes in my life, actually still helping.....
RESPECT to Chris and Soundgarden.
Heard it in the wiiiiind... & I saw it in the skyyyy.....thought it was the endddddd.... thought it was the 4th of July.
Chris's vocals with Kim's guitar playing, Ben's bass, & Matt's drums= holy fuck.
The chorus just could not sound any more perfect to me. So much talent between those 4
RIP Chris Cornell
Jesus Christ, that sound. That must have been amazing to experience that live. It gave me goosebumps listening with headphones on. I listened to Soundgarden a lot when I was younger but I was only 12 when this concert happened.
I post this song to my Facebook every 4th of July. "Light a Roman Candle and hold it in your hand" RIP Chris Cornell.
The most haunting live version of any soundgarden song.Just mesmerising
It’s 2020 and this song is still great.
it will never not be great.
It's 2022 now, and I think it got better.. like 2025 better if that's even possible.
who cares what year it is.
This song will eternally be phenomenal. It doesn't matter if it's 1994 or 5094.
the way he sings here is similar to the demo version of 4th of july
Was tripping my balls off the first time I heard this song played live by SG in 1996... unforgettable!
davidofpiano423 lucky lol
so was he when he wrote it, apparently! this song lyric was brought to us by an acid trip, according to an interview with Cornell. Stunning song
@@ileanasantamaria2364 nice. I was gonna swoop in with this tidbit but you got me.
This song is actually about someone tripping in the vicinity of the 4th of July, as per Chris' explanation, so, nice ;).
RIP legend, one of Soundgarden's most slamming tunes
No offence to Pearl Jam I think they're great but I think they hold Matt Cameron back when he plays drums cause in Soundgarden he plays incredibly
+Wahoo Gonzales He's just not a good match for PJ, simple as that
+Wahoo Gonzales Matt is not suited for PJ. They are almost like a metal band sometimes, which is awful.
Some guys are in need of Matt's drum kicking and smashing, and we all know who they are.
Definitely more suited for Soundgarden. He plays well with Pearl Jam, but SG is def more his style. For that reason, I really miss Dave Abruzzesse when he toured 'Ten' and 'Vs.' w/ PJ.
last time i saw pj matt had the double bass hitting so hard it felt like it was changing the pace of my heart beating during RVM....we just smoked a blunt too, which prob has something to do with it.
Couldn't agree more... I'm sure he'd tell you the same.
a song that can reach your inner soul, like no other!!!
Chris Cornell is in my opinion the greatest male vocalist in rock history. I truly believe he is more impressive than Freddie Mercury. He had so much versatility with how he could sing, a versatility Freddie just didn’t have.
He blows Freddy away. Fred was always a more Broadway voice. Imo
And the best performance they ever made of this version live.haunting heavy sexy and fucking badass!!;)
I wish so, SO badly I could have seen them live.
Matt Cameron on the kit deserves a lot of credit, what an drummer. Whoa.
Matt is such a good drummer! so powerful here. Kim´s sounds is like Tony Iommi´s but on uppers, it is thick but ominously bright. Sometimes SG feels more like stoner rock than that "grunge". I wish Matt could display out his power in PJ. Best version of this song I ever heard. Thanks for the upload.
matt was live drumming on pj so ;)
Diego Núñez Soundgarden never labeled themselves as a grunge band. They have classic metal influences and hard rock roots and elements, also the album Super unknown is a mixture of sludgy metal, stoner rock and psychedelic rock
Diego Sebastián Núñez Soundgarden is his first and foremost. That is his mother!
Ugly Truth Nothing To Say and Loud Love, it's Stoner before Stoner
Maximilien Rigobert stoner rock is much older than soundgarden
Heavy...so very heavy, right to the end. Love you!
Very doom metal sounding!! ❤️ 🖤
Just watching videos tonight. This sounds even darker than usual with the slowed tempo. Badass
Chris rocks this song ,,,
This is very pro shot filming,I love it!
My favorite song off of super unknown 🔥🔥🔥
I love the VHS sound quality as well. This is why CZcams is fucking beautiful
Every once in a while I come back here to play this video.
Today seems fitting…..
Sound Garden a awesome group and Chris Cornell a awesome singer.Alot of great songs.Sad he passed away May Chris Cornell RIP 💐
Happy 4th of July 2021!
Miss you every day Chris. The world needs you back man.
Can really feel the ambience.
my favorite Soundgarden song of all time
This song got me into Soundgarden
I actually first heard it on the Fourth of July
His voice brings me to fucking tears man, it did back in 1991 and now 2021 still, NO ONE else ever did that , well ok, Layne Staley in down in a hole, nutshell and love hate love, but Chris and layne they bring me to tears, I love you forever guyssss💜❤️💜❤️💜❤️💜🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
Soundgarden forever, Cornell
Definitely my favorite soundgarden song. AiC is my all time fave, and this sounds kind of similar with that dark tone so it's no wonder why.
Soundgarden has always been dark, if you are not one of those who knows the band only by Superunknown, you will know. In 1986 Soundgarden already sounded like Sabbath, while AIC still toyed with being Glam.
Aic is great but soundgarden is to me the goat
Listen to Echo Of Miles and you will see why Alice covers SG instead of the other way around
I always thought parts of this jam sounded like Alice too.
The dude makes a comment appreciating both bands and here you idiots come making comparisons and turning it into a competition. What a fucking shame...
His voice is ethereal.
Man his voice was powerful
The first time I heard this song I wanted to quit playing and singing and writing. It was as if everything I had ever hoped to do had just been done way better than I ever could hope to do.
Badass song
I always loved that guitar improv at the beginning.
Amazing performance. Truly powerful song.
Chris was a great guitar player and amazing singer a Beautiful man with a big loving heart a Love and miss you Chris 🧍❤️🔥🔥♥️♥️🌹🎸💯😎❤️🔥🔥♥️♥️
Damn, when that voice opens up it OPENS UP. Won't get another like Chris again.
Miss him everyday... your sweet everything.....
holy shiiit
Indeed
Man, the drummer, Kim & his guitar & Chris Cornell are awesome. This is just an awesome song. I purchased the CD 2 yrs ago & discovered this song.
94 was the greatest year for music
The way that matt smash the drums at 3:03, cool dude, seems angry with the World
Listening to the 4th of July on the 4th of July. Doesn't get any better than this.
love you chris
and one of the best..
Jesus, that fucking voice,I was not expecting it to sound even better than the recording wtf. Like for real I’m getting goosebumps and I feel like I’m tearing up for some reason
My fav performance by Soundgarden. So raw, and powerful. RIP Chris Cornell. You are legend, and legends live forever.
It still hurts but having videos like this takes some of the sting out of losing a phenomenal singer/player like Chris!!!
This man was an oracle...April 1994 Chris took some acid then decided to take a walk down the Native American reservation..lo and behold voices spoke to him comforting feelings attracted like he wasn't alone in a dreamy like conciousness yet whenever he looked back only glimpses of this spirit telling him to listen and write so Cornell did and we have this GLORIOUS MESSAGE we should heed "4th of July" was for us a warning of CERN and its capabilities with the Hadron Collider. ..YES he struggled with depression and substance abuse but he LOVED LIFE he did not take his own life..he was sent here to link us together not tear us apart.. FOREVER GREATFUL RIP CHRIS CORNELL!!!
Happy day Chris
RIP Chris.
Best live version of song I've found- great sound quality and solid performance! Thanks for posting!
Fave soundgarden track! A true gem forever. Watched two minutes to midnight’s cover of this (it’s actually the best I’ve seen) but was still floored with a newfound appreciation for Chris’ vocals in the sense that it took two other talented vocalists to replicate his abilities and range on this song. Such a moving song. ❤
Holy sh*t this is amazing...this tour is a tough one if you are a long time Soundgarden fan because Chris was starting to come apart at the seams with personal issues and health things from personal stress...but this is GREAT!
No one sings like you anymore.... Loud Love and RIP... forever....
Goosebumps to the extreme. Thank you Chris. For everything.
Matt Cameron has always been a BEAST! Goddamn, the drumming was awesome here!
Hands down the best Soundgarden song!!!
Sludged out. Sooo sic
Seen a few live versions of this song throughout the years and I keep coming back to this one. Chris sounded so damn great here! What a voice. What a song.
This song is my love language
Wonderful, this record is one of the best of the 90,s.
I play it every 4th of July...and a lot of times in between. They were awesome and damn I wish I saw them.
I'm here today. 4th of July.
This guitar was so low to me when i first heard it. Amazing song and amazing times when this album came out.
Thank you so much, Chris( RIP
Quedate con quien te ame asi de fuerte como matt le pega a la bateria ♡
Un buen maltrato jjajaja
Wish I could have seen this. I was stationed in Germany those days.

Love this song, so goddamn heavy! Missing Chris tho. Such a loss 😟
amazing
...and I still remember your sweet everything...
Soundgarden at the peak.
Mind blowing gem.
first song that comes to mind on this day
Damn, that takes me back. I was 15 in 94. SUPERUNKNOWN, AIC Unplugged, In Utero.
What a time.
Thank you.
Best version of this song.
