  • In praise of the European Day of Early Music and celebrating the commencement of our joint education project ‘Roots’, VOCES8 presents 'Sing Joyfully', a celebration of the joy and beauty of voices in harmony. Watch the event on Facebook Live, streamed on Tuesday 19 March at 7pm from the beautiful chapel in Trinity College, Cambridge.
    “Joy and woe are woven fine” in a programme including Byrd, Tallis, Victoria, Britten and Dove, with Monteverdi’s dramatic rendering of La Sestina at its centre-point. The programme includes a short presentation by students from our project ‘Roots’.
    Roots partners Cambridge Early Music, VCM Foundation/VOCES8, Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire Music, Anglia Ruskin University and The Brook Street Band are very grateful for the kind support of the Helen Hamlyn Trust and HERA - Humanities in the European Research Area.

    Just goes to prove this group just doesn't "record" well....they are just as perfect live. Any choir should observe how this group LISTENS to each other and balances his or her voice within the piece of music. This is true musicianship at it's finest.

    • @MerricMaker
      @MerricMaker Před 5 lety

      The idea of recording well is silly. Professionals should be equally good, whether they have extra takes or not.

      That's not what Kevin means by "recording well." He's talking about the audio equivalent of being photogenic. As with people's faces on film or video, some people's voices are flattered by sound recording, and others' aren't flattered at all (rather the contrary).
      For what it's worth, I think VOCES8 usually sounds just fine on recording, but I haven't heard them live so I can't compare.

      how can you say "any choir should do" ? do you know how professionals choirs work ? with what you say I can see that you don't, cause this is exactly what we do in choir, but it's not really the same work as with 30 singers it's often hard that the last right singer can hear the last left ... choir and 8 singers is clearly not the same, and if you were knowing your subject you won't say that =) so plz don't write something like that without knowing what you are talking about =)

    Superbly gifted young people with encyclopedic knowledge of music and the talent to perform it flawlessly. I was fortunate enough to hear collaborators of theirs, the Gisauldo Six, a year prior to the first lockdown and have only heard Voces 8 on cd and youtube. That doesn't detract from the feeling I've experienced a tiny glimpse of heaven. We're very lucky to have such talent in the uk.

    What a wonderful concert. It’s great to hear new choral music as well as old. Voces8 are superlative musicians but what astounds me is that no one voice ever seems to dominate They really listen to each other and the whole sound takes precedence over any one contribution. Great team work! It must be so hard to achieve this and I imagine they rehearse long long hours. I love the Monteverdi madrigals especially in this intimate environment.i am enjoying this confined at home in France during the Covid epidemic. Wouldn’t normally find the time....

    It’s remarkable that the Trinity College Choir sings this well, IN THIS VERY VENUE, three times a week for services during term. I just now compared their two renditions of “O Nata Lux” and I think that I prefer the Choir’s version. And they take on the newer/more difficult repertoire also.

    Why do listeners seems compelled to point out minor ‘mistakes’ (if indeed they are)? These listeners don’t seem too sure themselves. I can’t help but think that (a) they want all other listeners to know how learned they are in music, as if anyone really cares, or (b) they must have a touch of OCD. , which I sincerely hope is not the case. I find it so distracting and condescending. Just enjoy and stop being picky. C. Waugh

      Ken Getz There are lots of such dissonant harmonies when they sing for example “sleep” by Eric Whitaker. Those are beautiful. I grew up in professional musician family, sang in the choir,
      And I sang and recorded solos. This 6:53-6:56 dissonance is not sounding good at all. If this was written in music notes it was not executed properly. It was not supposed to sound this bad. Just humble observation and opinion. No offense or disrespect intended. These guys are at the top of the game. But no one is perfect.
