- Talk's Kevin O'Sullivan is joined by The Spectator's French correspondent Gavin Mortimer to discuss the Paris Olympics.
The pair begin with the men's triathlon being postponed because the pollution in the river Seine was too high. On this issue Kevin says the games are "turning into one long embarrassment for France" and Gavin adds the country are receiving "international attention for the wrong reasons.".
The opening ceremony for the games is also discussed, which Gavin calls a "celebration of woke culture."

I think it was so poorly done. I am insulted by it. That being said……I feel so sorry for the athletes that have worked so hard to be there.
At least they have shown us just what woke is.
They missed out the flag being hung upside down, the South Koreans being introduced as North Koreans, and athletes moving into hotels because the Olympic Village is inadequate. I feel sorry for those who have trained so hard for so long; they deserve better.

I agree that the opening ceremony was grotesk and preposterous. However, claiming that the games are not about the athletes because of the problems with the Seine is factually untrue. France had installed a massive water storage basin and spent 1.6bn. EUR to clean up the Seine. The extreme rainfall was just bad luck, sometimes that happens.

What you watched was the reference to The Feast of the Gods (Greek Gods dating long before Christianity existed) A French artist painted an image of that folk lore about Olympia (eg Olympic origins) France remains a largely Christian country. Apologise for your ignorance to the French ppl
