- Tim performed 'Hope', a song from Groundhog Day The Musical (now on Broadway) at the 2017 Olivier Awards. He was backed by some of the cast of the Old Vic production and the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Groundhog Day won Best New Musical and Andy Karl won the Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Phil Connors. The ceremony was held at the Royal Albert Hall and screened by ITV.

He wears shoes!!! I do not know whether to be proud of him or disappointed by him
I didn't even notice them..... I just stared at the tie in complete disbelief.
No eye shadow either... oh well
This song requires two boots
Eseem respect!
Well he's not 'In-Character' and promoting his Broadway show... so the shoes and eye liner (lack of) are totally acceptable!
I feel like some of this audience have absolutely no idea what they just witnessed tbh
All he's ever wanted to be, Is a rockstar on rage or MTV, But he knows it's not fuckin' likely. He's just turned 30, He knows he'll always be AN OLIVIER AWARD WINNING COMPOSER, LYRICIST AND LEGEND!!!
I was about to reply with "he's actually in his 40s" before I realised exactly how far that joke went over my head.
Anyway in my favourite version he says that's his age.
Cute!
Jack Sharples haha not to worry Jack we've still got your back
I would've loved to see a special one-off performance where Tim played Phil
Gosh, he really can have a darkside...
AndroZeus pretty deep, ay?
Deep as, bro.
💩yeah
@@digitallorin9595 Yeah, I noticed that
Nice reference haha
The sheer force of this performance, the indomitable rage that oozes from every syllable defines the commitment of this performer. Not to mention the way the lyrics are imbued with a very real pain, not just of performance, but of experience. Here is a man pouring his very soul into his art, drawing on what is no doubt his 'own brooding potential' to transmit something that needs to be more than spoken, something that has to be felt. It is this immeasurable 'something' that makes a good man great.
Welcome back to this video, my dear groundhogs. It is your day. We were waiting for you.
Has everyone here listened to the lyrics properly? He reveals that he's never giving up "hope" that he might be able to finally successfully kill himself.
I'm surprised there's a few people saying this isn't very clever, or good. It's a pretty superb paradox.
I swear to you I've tried
And sometimes I just wanna give up
Just give up and stay here and live
But I know there's no point in denying
That I will keep trying
I'm a lot of things but I'm not a quitter
Well in the context of the movie, whatshisface keeps trying to kill himself soo, it's not really from tims perspective
Groundhog day isn't it- Wanting and end to a never ending day...
Well I did. Especially when you see it in the context of the show.
Honestly listening to your catalogue in chronological order today and THEN finding this ... I am Weeping with joy and despair ... fuck Tim you changed the world
That damn ending was superb.
That was the most legendary voice crack ever on the last note
As much as I like Tim Minchin succeeding in the musical scene, I want him to release another album.... :(
Done
Some people commenting that this is less edgy and more straightforward than his usual stuff: I don't think it's a spoiler to say that within the context of the musical, this is actually about Phil Connors repeatedly trying to commit suicide (only to wake up the next day, every day). So Tim has taken the vocabulary of a typical inspirational ballad and twisted it round a dark subject matter. Also there's a neat Dorothy Parker reference in there!
Andrew Evans wait a minute. Before I even read your comment I was getting serious Phil Collins vibes from this song. I went back after reading your comment and tried to identify exactly what made me think of Collins and all I can say is upon rewatching, I got serious goosebumps. This must have been intentional? Am I crazy? This made me so happy
@@emcdonald496 I mean it's a song from Groundhog Day the musical, so yes it was intentional 😀
I mean Tim has been retired from comedy for a decade! Are people really surprised it's not edgy?!!
@@jackwhitbread4583 how is it "not edgy"? it's a song about not losing hope that he'll finally be able to k1|| himself XD

Love Tim's performance, bringing him to his limits. Vocally. -
Many of us have been or are "at dark places:. Not excluding myself. I'd like to add a TRIGGER warning here.
Those lyrics are really inspirational - in a bad way 😢
I saw the show with my wife. I wasn't sure what to expect since I love the movie so much, but we were both very pleasantly surprised. It was a great show.
the four people who disliked this have clearly given up
They must think they're the 'cool' people!
Great as always. Thanks Tim
This song gutted me completely and utterly in the most wonderful way
"Gutted me utterly" sounds like it could be in a Tim Minchin song.
I wish he would release an album of him singing all these songs. Not that I don't like the artists from the broadway show but it's just interesting to hear him sing the songs he wrote for the show.
Agreed!
@@markgirard5871 did you.. forget to switch to your alt xD
@@markgirard5871bro forgot to change to his alt
@@goldenpie6 Oh wait I know what I did I meant to agree with someone else and ended up agreeing with myself. LOL!
"Hope'...it's self, has wounded my being far worse than "Fear' or 'Hatred' ever have...
What's worse, is the fact that "...there is always tomorrow" ...is precisely the problem because, it never seems to end...the pain will not die without you..!!
So it's won, the pain...or we were always one in the same..!!
Oh man i had almost forgot how much i adore your voice
Amazing, Tim!
I need a love button. ❤️
Wow,fantastic Tim.
that was amazing tim, good work
A perfect ending to a shitty day
I love this song so much! I heard it once few years ago and couldn't find it again. And today I'm finally here. Thank you for this song, it is very actual and importaint for me (I'm in Ukraine)
Great as always! And better looking now
Holy fuck me, Tim. What a song. Your writing just gets better and better. You're so good.
Sees a new Tim song, HYPE!!!!
This is amazing. Is my sneaky suspicion, that Tim delivers a much more emotional version here than the version which was performed on stage in the musical, warranted? I've only seen clips of the UK/Broadway versions, but they don't seem to have the raw emotion of Tim's performance. Very sad that it was cancelled. US audience not able to cope with its level of darkness? Should we yanks grow up a bit? 7 Tony noms can't be wrong. Plus the Oliviers.
This man just get sexier every time I see him.
Toronto Ontario needs some Minchin
Stunning. Congratulations on the awards and I hope there's more to come. You deserve them all
Wow! Love you Tim!
Thank you Tim.
PHENOMENAL!! Such incredible work, Tim. We're privileged to hear it. Thank you so much for sharing it.
I love his new look
Wow!!! Tim you're awesome!!!
It always seems like his head is gonna explode, but that would probably add to the awesome music Kappa
Amps up intensity Minchin style! Well done 😃
thank you Tim 😊
"Surrounded by a cast of halfwit actors", that's a bit sneaky xD
Great performance!
the actual lyrics from the musical are not as "family friendly" it's actually "half-wit b4s7rds"
Just thirty five days until you'll be accepting your Tony! 🎉🎉🏆🎉🎉 "Fucking Tony," ah? 😉
Amazing!
Sometimes it's best to fold a hand and look for a new dream.
Thanks Tim, really needed to hear this.
I love Tim Minchin to the end
❤ me some Tim daily.
Oh HOLY SHEET. That was incredible. I thought I knew everything Tim available on YT. I’m glad to find I’m wrong, while simultaneously peeved that it’s taken so long for YT to go, oh, yeah, there’s this..
Damn, he's getting finer with age
Well done!
Perfect timing Tim, with exams and all that coming up. Really needed this. Thanks for being amazing as always. :)
you're back
I like the glance at the audience in "Empty smiles and empty faces". Very subtle take that audience - moment.
clicked, expected to love it, wasn't disappointed
Yes, well played lad.Smashed it!
OMG. TIM! 😍😍😍
Nice nod to Dorothy Parker's Resume at the end.
Thank you, I needed this today.
" Lighter goes back and forth"🔥🚬
Is their no lighter emoji?
I'm shocked that there's a cigarette emoji! 🔥 😉
Thanks Tim your the best 🖤💯😀💯
Fresh Minchin!
Shit didn't realise this was uploaded 4 hours ago, just felt like a Minchin sesh and this was the first link ahaha
It's so good to see Tim Minchin's videos being posted again. I was waiting for something funny, but still the song is beautiful.
You'll be waiting a long time! Tim retired from comedy 10 hears ago, he's moved on
@@jackwhitbread4583 I mean, the song "Stuck" from the show is 100% classic Tim Minchin but with 6-7 voices and in a narrative
He so looks like thannos, at 3:20 just love Tim though. I love his comedy, and now this new flavour of music is just... Fucking A!
Our rock n' roll nerd has blown us all away. 💜
Fucking Fantastic! Thank You, Tim.
Awesome video! I hope we get some new stuff from you!
Wow that was a great! nice and inspiring
So atticus finaly released the rock musical ge wanted to do with hank
*:') thank you*
great tune.. #rockhard : )
His back!!!!!
His neck!!!!!
his leg!
Jovi Levi :3 made me laugh 😝
His face!!!!!!
his gingerness :D
I like how the veins in his forehead look like an 'H'
ew
zero one zero zero one zero zero zero!
I hadn't noticed that. Now I can only think of Arnold Rimmer.
It's just blood bypassing his brain.
This comment made me uncomfortable.
Mann, I felt that
whoa!
They turned the movie "Groundhog Day" into a live musical? Cool!
Hey guys, can you open the "Submit contributions" so we cand send subtitles to the channel? (PT-BR)
Hot damn.
Rest in peace Adam West
Tim Minchin is the perfect person to play Elton John in a movie about him.
Eh, maybe one day he'll be as good as him
No
Well now that Rocketman happened and it was great, that is incorrect. We need him to play Gerard Way in a My Chemical Romance movie
Genius
where can i watch This Musical ?
Is it just me or is tim looking more and more like bill bailly?!
justin 82 😂😂 he does a bit doesnt he.
I'm convinced Bill Bailey is an alternate version of Tim who glitched backward in time to warn people of Tim's coming.
@@otterhero6229 considering they have both been musicians for 35+ years not sure your theory really holds up
YAAAAAAAAAAÀAAAAA!!!!!
That thumbnail tho XD
Why you not have subtitles on all videos

Fuck me up with that last note, Tim
Frankly, I believe that all of us would find that not just living forever, but having to live forever, to ultimately be far more terrifying than death: At least we all do get to die. - j q t - 2019
Put into context, it sums it up.
this is the same guy who wrote "prejudice" and others.......... :O hope you're ok Tim x
Deep as
Bring this to New York and then proceed to take my money.
David Krupnik um, groundhog day is on Broadway right now.
Fake he is wearing shoes
No color streaks in his hair, no extreme eye... and he's wearing shoes.
Our little Timmy is all growed up!
Is this Justin Lee Collin's come back ?
Someone labeled his head with an H in case he forgot
Fuck, wow.
I miss the edge of his old stuff but i'm happy he's doing great.
It's about suicide attempts. Listen closely to the lyrics, especially at the end. Phil's trapped in an endless cycle and losing it. "Faith" refers to his way out.
This song is pretty damn edgy.
Is that his father?

Still in love with Atticus Fetch. What a great performance!
