This song has a unique, kind of mysterious atmosphere. Definitely my favourite from Mr. Walker's catalogue. And the bassline is just insane. Without a doubt among the best bass performances I have ever heard.
I never heard anyone sing like him - the subtle brilliance of his voice, resonating quality, and tone. It was put into perspective some time back. I listened to an orchestral performance with top musicians and a singer who was good. They were performing the Scott repertoire to a packed audience. As I say, it was good but not Scott Walker - nothing near it. Which made me realize just how special he was and is. And how lucky I am to have been born to an age where I got it first hand straight off the press if you like. He's moved over but God bless him until he returns - if he chooses.

Amazing track. The bass style may be a response to contemporary French orchestrated pop, e.g. Serge Gainsbourg. Though Scott does it even better. Pure genius.

I've been listening to this song for about 4 years now. I think I can say that these esoteric lyrics are finally staring to pierce thru my grey matter. Brilliant arrangements, Brilliant lyrics! Scott, you've created something great. You should take another listen.
Ha ha Scott ended up as a painter and decorator. There are some great but absurd myths surrounding what he's been up to over the decades and I've never heard this one before.

Tell me, who did play bass on this? It is second only to Wishbone Ash' song Sometime World on my all time bass solos. Brilliance. I suspect it was some session man that got about $50 for it, walked away and didn't even know what brilliance he had created. Simply superb.
Great bass playing. The best guesses for who it was seem to be Herbie Flowers or Dave Richmond who were the go to bassmen for sessions in the UK in that era.

@timdonderevo no it was, gainsbourg predated walker by about 18 months - theres a similar vibe on walkers seventh seal and aint no sunshine cover- also scott 4 seems to have this style all over it! regardless its great as youve pointed out!
It's more than likely that it's Herbie Flowers on Bass duties. Herbie did loads of session work in the late 60's and early 70's for the likes of Tony Hatch and Keith Mansfield. It's got his distinctive sound, check 'Sounds Of The 70's' by Hatch, you'll see what I mean. Amazing track though. No one comes close to Scott for invention and imagery.

Fabulous song. I discovered it while listening to Air album Late Night Stories, but the original has a really authentic and rusty feel.
