As a seasoned, salty RN I can cannulate anything with a lumen, no matter how small the diameter.
That sounds like an ED nurse that doesn't contemplate the ramifications of selecting the correct catheter and location of the vascular access. You are welcomed to correct me if I am wrong. Not attacking you, just pointing out that your view of vascular access could use some updating.
