  • Best-selling author and science historian George Dyson spent his youth living in a treehouse on the water's edge outside of Vancouver, British Columbia, building aluminum-frame kayaks based on the traditional Aleut design known by the Russian term "baidarka". In this short documentary, Dyson discusses his years living in Canada and traveling by sea kayak along the Inside Passage. We follow him as he gives a presentation on traditional kayaks at the Alaska Native Day celebration at Fort Ross, California, an historic early 19th century Russian settlement.
Dyson is the author of BAIDARKA: THE KAYAK (1986), DARWIN AMONG THE MACHINES (1997), PROJECT ORION: THE ATOMIC SPACESHIP 1957-1965 (2002), TURING'S CATHEDRAL (2012), and ANALOGIA: THE ENTANGLED DESTINIES OF NATURE, HUMAN BEINGS AND MACHINES (2020).

I was lucky enough to meet George as a young college student in 1996. My friends and I built kayaks and were taking the ferry from Bellingham to Alaska so that we could paddle the whole summer. He was nice enough to let me leave my truck at his shop. Almost 30 years later, I'm just like the guy he describes. It was the best summer of my life and I tell anyone interested in kayaks to go live a summer in magical southeast Alaska. I was also fortunate enough on that trip to be given the Starship and The Canoe which is a story about George and his father. I had no idea what George had accomplished before the trip, I only left thinking that he was one of the smartest people I had ever met. Upon my return, I confirmed it. My friend on the trip became an accomplished woodworker. The name of his shop was Fairweather Woodworking.
I was in Bellingham a few weeks and ago and was hoping his shop was open. It wasn't, but I could peek in and see the incredible shop which still looks very similar. I was with my son and told him, " this is the playground of a genius."

George Dyson is an amazing character and an incredible kayak builder. I first learned of him many years ago in the book "The Starship and the Canoe" (which I still have). Thanks for producing this story of his life and I was thrilled to finally see a photo of the "Mount Fairweather".

George was one of my inspirations when I started building baidarkas, and later umiaks. Never with an aluminum frame, but now looking at this film, I’m tempted to try it!

There is no doubt that George is an inspiration.
He has an august lineage, although he has not followed any conventional academic path.
That is the inspiring part of his story.
We can all succeed in our own way. In our own life. Despite what others may think. Despite convention.
This video deserves a wider audience!
