It was Lal Bahadur Shastri ji who did that first. The second PM of India. He refused to accept the poor quality foodgrains from west and told people to fast for once a week. The stature of that person was such, that some restaurants used to close in the evening. No compulsion, the restaurant owners used to close it on their own. Some called their one day fast as Shastri vrat. Today you can't expect any PM or minister to say such thing...they would get criticized left right and centre... Shastri ji heavily supported green revolution in India and helped India become foodgrain sufficient.

A similar reaction was expressed by locals for Pokhran 1, when we were posted to NZ.
They griped and blustered about how much "aid" (milk biscuits) they gave India. From boys and teachers in my school that I had to face (along with the daily dose of racism), to politicians and journalists that my father had to handle (along with more subtle racism) and give the Indian government's stance and message to.
My parents later told me that NZ was the WORST posting in their 33 years, which started with Bonn, two years after the end of WW 2.
Imagine a bombed out Germany, with soup lines, in your face poverty and an Indian family (brown skinned) having a better experience than in NZ in the early 1970s.
    That says A LOT.

From poverty stricken life in an East Bengal village to Rippon College, to Cambridge, scholarships all the way., and to being interviewed by Nehru and told to join the IFS. He just wanted to go back to the village and teach English, as he was taught by the masterji.
He wrote a lot of poetry, in Bengali, and contributed them to a Bengali magazine, called Ashram.
Me, I'm a tech challenged old desi. Refuses to do social media.

Pakistan was compiling nuclear weapons in late 1980s and 1990s.
After collapse of Soviet union and USA withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, china adopted expansionist approach of encircling india, but building infrastructure in the territories very near to disputed areas.
India repeatedly requested west that the two most global threats perceived by the western world that is 1. Islamic terrorism and 2. Expansionist communism ideologies were in the neighborhood of india and the world needs to take note of that, the west did not budge mutch and our requests fell in to deaf ears. However USA did brought preseller amendments to stop weapons sale to Pakistan and did not deliver the F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan under indian influence.
But that was it. Pakistan was positioning itlesf strategically by supporting Taliban in Afghanistan to create the so called strategic depth and was actively diverting the Afghan mujahideens who fought against Russians into indian territory.
India had to find some way to give a strong signal to the neighborhood basically primarily china and generally Pakistan.
The decision of Nuclear tests was made in 1995 by pm Narsimha Rao and Vajpayee ji executed the decision in 1998.
    The world changed thereafter.

I watch most of the channel videos, I appreciate you. I request you if this channel can do a Video on waste and garbage throwing on roads, how educated, literates, public servants, private servants, and most of the citizens in India throw garbage on roads. Like throwing biscuit wrappers, cold drink bottles, snack packets, spitting, or any thing in roads instead of dustbins. Please explain how municipal staff is doing hard duties, does municipal is required to sweep the roads, does we can't keep the cleanness. Some revolutionary change is required to make the India clean, If something has to be happened, then it has to be started. Please please see if you can make the video on this.

We're a good people, we're an unaggressive lot - True, but by saying things against friendly nations YEARS later, doesn't do India any favors, it only gives them the impression we're holding a grudge, and smiling on the surface - That's NOT what Indians are like, and that's NOT the kind of impression we should portray today!! These are times for DEPLOMACY, and something India has thrived on since independence. Keeping good relations with Britain, being friendly with both US and Russia, and allowing US to regret backing Pakistan instead of India. Festival of Bharat, Celebrate Bharat, don't step on toes to do it - From my corner of the US, this Hindustani Parsi would like to remain Proud to call herself INDIAN always!! Jai Hind!!

Vajpayee was more a statesman than politician and that's why he lost in 2004 in spite of clean governance. Probably, Modi though following his model mostly ,don't want to fall a victim to cunning politics. He is more assertive, rather dictates like Indira. But because of his assertiveness, straightforward, commitment to people he is fit for the country than anyone.
