Yes, it is a rare ability to be able to describe such deep subjects so poetically, and clearly enough to allow even lay people to catch a glimmer of what the experts understand - to grasp the basics at least.
And to be able to do so with complete honesty, even when the subject treads on some people's cherished beliefs without sounding confrontational is a feat.
It almost makes me think that, like "journalist", "science communicator" ought to be a college major somewhere. A major combining a broad understanding of science with philosophy, and creative literature.
I have heard detractors ask about what major research Tyson has done, as if that is all that matters. One Tyson has the potential to create a dozen Hawkings, or Krauss's, in his career.

Does anyone else think that maybe... just maybe science should and is becoming a part of our popular culture again? I honestly don't understand how it ever wasn't. Science not only searches for the answers to our deepest questions, but is our way of exploring, as scientists are our explorers. How can we not realize that science NEEDS to be a part of our culture, part of the framework of our society. Please do your bit and embrace science as a part of our culture, and like the atoms formed in the depths of ancient stars, is a part of us.

@@gregl3949 The most astounding fact is the knowledge that the atoms that comprise life on Earth, the atoms that make up the human body, are traceable to the crucibles that cooked light elements into heavy elements in their core under extreme temperatures and pressures.
These stars, the high mass ones among them, went unstable in their later years. They collapsed and then exploded, scattering their enriched guts across the galaxy. Guts made of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and all the fundamental ingredients of life itself.
These ingredients become part of gas clouds that condense, collapse, form the next generation of solar systems, stars with orbiting planets. And those planets now have the ingredients for life itself.
So that when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up-many people feel small because they’re small and the universe is big-but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars. There’s a level of connectivity.
That’s really what you want in life, you want to feel connected, you want to feel relevant, you want to feel like you’re a participant in the goings-on of activities and events around you. That’s precisely what we are, just by being alive.
I used to be a christian because i was expected to be by everybody around me and society itself..... i thought i believed in God and had a spiritual connection with Him. But, now that ive found science, free thought and critical thinking i look back now and can say with a smug attitude that I feel more spiritual, in a metaphorical sense of course, than I ever have before in my life..

I was once a Christian youth leader, but once I compared the scientific explanations of how we got here to the bible story of Adam and Even, it was only a matter of months before I abandoned the concept of faith altogether. Science just makes way more sense.

Until classical physics is no longer sufficient to explain the world around us or the universe at large. Then you will have to question your faith in science. There is more, far more, than the explanations provided by contemporary scientists lauded as gods, such as Tyson. Most of astrophysics is speculation. No one can prove the Big Bang, no one can prove stars are being born anymore. We are just making guesses based on observations.
eternalnate Whenever you see a star that is a different color than another it is because they are in different stages of their respective life cycles. We've seen stars forming, stars in the middle, and stars that have died.
Our star is in the middle of its life cycle, it is considered yellow now but as it loses it's mass it's outer gaseous layers will escape further into space making it appear larger.
Eventually it will deplete its fuel reserves, blast out its gaseous layers and explode.
I would like to point out that assumptions based on observation is much more reliable than assumptions based on anything else.
All intelligent men and women realize that assumptions are not a dirty word as long as they can be falsified, verified, and subject to change. And star formation matches those criteria quite flawlessly.

This video is a prime example as to why I will always appreciate the value and power of the internet. Without the World Wide Web, I would not have been able to experience such exquisite beauty and insight. Yes, there are bad aspects to the internet, I’m not naive enough to deny that. But I feel that the internet gives more than it takes. That level of connection Neil was talking about in the video can be felt by anyone with a mere WiFi signal or cellular connection. The internet will always be one of my favorite places to learn about our world and discover new ideas. I am given some sense of that connection because of the 1’s and 0’s that travel across oceans to reach me.

This video has inspired me so much. I first saw this when I was 13 or 14 and it instantly hit me so hard. I watched it so many times after that, I had memorised the whole thing. I could revise the entire quote from memory without even actively having tried that. During this fase I watched Neil deGrasse Tyson's series and even read his book (that was quite difficult for a 14 year old with a different mother language) and wanted to become an astronomer. Sadly I had to give up on that because my math skills are far too poor, but I got into philosophy and fell in love. Now, at 18 I look back on this video and realise that what really got me from this video wasn't the science talk, but obviously the deeper meaning behind his words and the way he talks about life. In the end it was the philosophical message that inspired me so greatly.

I fell in love and at that moment i decided to major in physics in the future. btw i still struggle in math so don't worry haha
This makes me sad because everyday we argue about politics, especially in America. It's always this or that, up or down, whatever, regardless of alignment. I wish one day we stop fighting each other and have more of a desire to gain knowledge of our existence in this beautiful universe, and why our conciousness entered this tiny yet bold planet.

around 7 years ago I took a college class on theology and religion. During one of those class sessions my professor showed us this video. I still remember sitting in that dark room, hair standing up on end as the emotions swirled through me. I knew after that class that I needed to find this video and make sure I could watch it again whenever I needed to. Thank you for reminding me time and time again that the universe is beautiful and all I need to do to remind myself of that is to look a little closer.

Carl Sagan was Neil's example. Sad Sagan died when I was a kid, so I could not follow him like Neil did. But Neil Tyson is my example of a good man and he is everything Carl Sagan would be to me if he was still alive.

The most astounding fact in the universe beyond the fact that anything exists at all, is that it has arranged itself to become self aware. We observe the universe and its wonders; chances are there are billions of other creatures beyond earth that are able to appreciate the universe as well. That to me is the most astounding fact.
If we could see the univers AND the energy moving in (from outside - far enough) it may look like brain cells connected to each others, and this pattern repeat in our own body and also the body we live on (Earth).
I dont know if he is old enough but this universe may also be self-aware of himself.
We say our possibility to think can act on things around us. So I can barely imagine what this universe can produce in term of reaction when he think or dreams like we do.
Some may say the universe is god if you follow my perception, well I dont think so, it may be closer to be the reflection of god when we look at it with our own eyes and the way they works.

Michael Burkett Everyone has their own idea of what their 'most astounding fact' is. :) For me, it's hard to say what's the most astounding fact, because every single thing -- not even every living being, every single thing that exists (at least within our perception/observation) even the unknown -- the scale of things, the amount, wrath, and beauty of things, how far we think we've come with technology and as a race, but we truly and hardly know anything -- we don't even know what the Milky Way looks like because we're on the inside looking out. Man, I'm all over the place! Lol. I just want to know more! "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." That quote holds such truth.
Ray Klish I understand that it is somewhat subjective, however in some ways it is measurable to the extent that tracing atoms to the beginnings is less impressive and more arithmetic versus the idea that anything even exists at all; or the fact that atoms have arranged themselves in a manner that have eventually evolved to our consciousness.

While a grain of sand may not hold importance to the short time frame that is our perception, over thousands of years it will have made its difference.

The problem is that our concept of god is derived from our lack of understanding of the natural world 2000 years ago. This is why god has human qualities, we have anthropomorphized nature so that we could have a concept or a reason for things that have happened naturally.

It's strange, because there are certain parallels between what NDT said and many religions like Christianity, Buddhism and even ancient Norse (and I'm sure many others). For example, when he says that our atoms came from the stars, and the universe is in us, is that not so very different from the Bible saying that we came from God and that God is within us? Another is that when we die, our atoms become part of the Earth, if we get eaten by an animal or a tree feeds off our nutrients then our atoms become part of it (Reincarnation). And after that, once earth dies when our Sun expands then our atoms will return to the stars, like the Bible says that when we die we go to heaven (Except in this situation everyone is welcome to come), and we may become a part of stars anew. My favorite parallel however is that the proposed end of the universe is said to occur when a mass of black holes destroy all stars in the universe. Our atoms will be in these stars, and so it's kind of like the ancient Norse Ragnarok, where the dead heroes in Valhalla fight in a battle that brings about the end of the world (or in this case, universe). I am not supporting the plausibility of creationism, but I am merely voicing that maybe the two points of view are not too different as we think :)

It is possible that religious stories are mythologies created to explain the universe in a symbolic sense as opposed to one of a more literal fashion. He/She/It is not saying that "God is Great", rather that the stories put forth by the religious might in fact be telling the same tale as science, albiet in a more poetic manner that is easier for those not able or willing to acquire a complete scientific education.
