  • Chandor, or Chandrapur, was the first known capital of Goa and was initially ruled by kingdoms such as the Bhoja, Kadamba, and Chalukya. This fortified city has also been devastated by invaders such as Malik Kafur's army and later by Portuguese missionaries.
Chandor's stories of anguish and scars are still told through archaeological artefacts and Musal Khel's legacy.
Learn more about the great dynasties, battles, and archaeological discoveries in this episode of Sacred Stories with Sawani.

Frequently I had seen the 'beheaded' Nandi in so many FB posts and Insta reels ... but it was such an eye-opener to get to know the history behind this place. Thanks for that. Its really appreciated, the effort which has gone into recording this episode barefoot ... in a temple of our ancestors. Really appreciated. Valor tumka.

I am from Delhi and for the last twenty six years I alongwith my wife drive motorbike from Benaulim to Chandor and also visit these remains of temple and Nandi Maharaj. It was fascinating to read history of Chandor written on this site by Archaelogical Survey of India .
Aarossim village in Salcere taluka was once ruled by king Arusu , an Andhra king.

Last visit was in Jan of this year.
For the first time we saw a wild bison domesticated and tied with a long rope in ruins of mandir area .Now we are 70/64+.
Generally , people in Goa associate its history with arrival of Portugese and some of them wrongly introduce themselves as " Portugese Goan " .
It is good endevour to to trace archaelogical roots of Goa ,bring it to world in such elaborate and pain staking manner.

Even today there are temple ruins , for example Hindu temples have a pond ( or temple tank if that's the correct term) right ? Even in one Salcette village there is such a huge built up pond right in front of a Chapel ! And it looks ancient ( the pond) , which made me wonder it was most likely a temple tank.

Fascinating video. I had the distinct impression that Ms Sawani is scrupulous about reconstituting archeological sites based on facts, as far as it is possible, and complementing that with written records and oral traditions. The other part of this video I liked is to see how the original Hindu traditions are observed to this day by the Christian community; an unbroken thread of centuries old Hindu rituals and customs has survived the past five centuries to the modern times, in an extraordinary and inspiring expression that the Divine is One.

You are pretending as if you are a goan but the fact is your ancestors entered goa during Portuguese rule an that to illegally from maharashtra. let me explain to you why l think so . In all you documentaries you never mention about goan gaunkari system which is the foundation of goa an history of goa started with the arrival of the first natives on this land who were known as gaunkars. Our ancestors when arrived made this land caltivable, they sperated river an land by building bunds which you can see till today. Every village of goa has a gaunkari system which is still in existence till date. We gaunkars had no religion as such, an Buddhism was the first religion which was accepted an practiced by gaunkars an it was the main religion of gaunkars for around 2000yrs, later it was jainism which majority of gaunkars accepted as their religion it was in practice for around 1000yrs. Christianity entered goa in 52AD an many gaunkars also accepted it as a religion but in small numbers. The present day Hinduism came to goa in the end of 12th century. There were a genocide at that time were by all Buddhist an jains were either killed or forcibly converted an some took shelter in the neighboring kingdoms an their places of worship were converted into temples an that's how Buddhism an jainism vanished from goa. Christianity was saved from this assault because our outlook was different from Buddhist and jains, they could be easily identified because of their outlook like the way they dress an also because they had their own temples. Whereas Christian at that time had no Chruches because the concept of church an pictures of Jesus and mother Mary were not in existence at that time. Christians use to meet in any one of the house of their followers an conduct their prayer service with only a cross as a symbol to venerate. This piece of history you will not find in any history book published by any author because most of the history of goa is written by non goan historians. Regarding temples, many so called historians always quotes some unimaginable numbers like your friend shefali Vaidya who quotes her own numbers as 572. Here let me inform you that every village had only one temple because all gaunkars of the particular village were from the same caste an there were no other people staying in the village except gaunkars. The size of the villages was also very big an not what we see today. For eg tiswadi taluka, l am mentioning tiswadi taluka because l belong to this taluka an know history of this taluka well. Tiswadi must have comprised of not more then five villages, for eg. the village taligoa comprises panjim, dona Paula, caranzalem Miramar, st. Inez etc. St. Cruz village comprises of bambolim an surrounding areas, merces village had jurisdiction upto corlim, an so on. This was before Portuguese rule. There were other people in the village, they were brought to the village especially during the sowing an harvesting time an once their work was over they had to leave for their respective places from where they came from. Even when this people who were brought to work an temporarily were staying in the village they were not allowed to construct any temple an they were not even allowed entry in the temple as well by the gaunkars. since entire village land belonged to gaunkars an only a gaunkar had a right to construct a temple. Temples were considered as private property of the gaunkars. All temples of goa were built by gaunkars an only gaunkars had a right to built a temple. Temples were not only a place of worship but also a place were gaunkars is to meet to take decisions regarding the village affairs. Now only a gaunkar can claim that any of thier temple were destroyed because they were the owners of this temples an not any migrants from maharashtra. Regarding temple destructions. When all gaunkars got converted they themselves abandoned these temples because the new religion they practiced told them that those are actually houses of devils an since they were abandoned an no care taken after their conversion this temples collapsed by themselves. Here many migrants who are in goa says that churches are construct on the place of this temples which is not true. Churches were built far away from the existing temples because this temples were considered as house of devil. Since entire village belonged to gaunkars they built the churches wherever they want. We gaunkars accepted Christianity by our own free will an nobody forced us. This are rumors spread by fanatics who themselves entered goa during Portuguese rule an that too illegally. I can tell you in detail what type of practices which were going on in goa at that time before the arrival of Portuguese an because of this barbaric practices we converted to Christianity, l am a gaunkar an know this very well because my ancestors were part of that. If I start telling you all those things which were happening in goa you will say I am talking against your religion.
Regarding salcette taluka, this taluka came under Portuguese rule only in the year 1543 an chandor was not part of salcette at that time it was gifted after many years later on by the hindu rulers of that village, an it was during the period of your so called inquisition. Now regarding which ruler gifted chandor to Portuguese you will find it in goa archives since you claim to be a historian go there an find it out. But here in archives also there is a possibility that this documents must have disappeared because there are people like you who doesn't want to let people know the proper history of goa. It will be better you go to Lisbon in Portugal where those original gifts deed are well maintained an kept, there you will also find the original peace treaty signed by shivaji Maharaj for his release when he was arrested by the Portuguese.
