- Jaxon Smith-Njigba (or JSN) is an enigma. He is not anything like what I expected. So today, we breakdown his tape for the Seahawks in 2023 and try to figure out what impact he is going to have in 2024.

100%. We had a lot of weapons last year but it just never felt like they were all used correctly so we see how he can use each of them differently.
he's not going to, coming from a big time huskies fan, his passing offense is simple, screens and deep shots. JSN is gonna get used just like last year, he will only be used for screen passes while dk and locket will be used for deep shots. I dont think grubb will translate to the NFl.

@@krakenzzistrash5351I completely disagree with you! OC Ryan Grubb only had the most explosive offense the last 2 seasons with UW❗️Why do you think Alabama wanted him last year? Before Alabama hired Deboer as the HC, they wanted Grubb to be the OC for the ‘23 season! Grubb initially followed Deboer, but ultimately decided to stay in Seattle and become the new OC for the Seahawks. Grubb also brought Scott Gruff (offensive line coach) UW’s offensive line won the award for the best offensive line in college football! He’s going to make our offensive line at least serviceable! Which should open up the passing game as well as the rushing attack! If Coach Mac can get our defense into a top 10-15 unit in the NFL, then lookout for for the Seahawks! Depending upon how the draft plays out? Seattle could either be a Super Bowl contender or miss the playoffs entirely…
@@JJDonoghue I agree with you on the idea that he will definitely elevate the O line, i think it was a great move in that sense. But in my opinion grubb's offense worked in college because of how bad the PAC 12 defenses are, it worked so well because of how unguardable Odunze and polk were on the outside, and although seattle has great WRs, the gap between recievers and dbs in the NFL is much smaller. I don't think grubb is gonna revolutionize our passing game but he could improve our running game.
On the defense of JSN during the beginning of last season. He was coming back from a broken wrist and he was wearing a brace on that wrist. So his natural ability was inhibited the first half of the season. He got more fluent the second half of the season. I don't believe he attended all the necessary practices prior to the season. Hence he wasn't locked in with the QB's. I truly believe he will be at his best this season. LFG, HAWKS!!🔥 Thanks for the video, my dude! 👊🏾💯

im not concerned at all. 600+ yards in your rookie year as a WR3 in an offense that he hinted didnt utilize him very well is impressive. of course he can become a more consistent route runner but i expect that to happen in year 2. remember the year 1 to year 2 jump from DK?

@@nawfsidedc You're totally right. I should've mentioned that. Getting injured and missing those valuable preseason reps certainly set him back and helps explain the hand issues too.
He also talked about how his catching was affected from the cast for first four weeks. Most people forget he was suppose to miss a few weeks of the season, but came back early.

Not really sure what you expected, but he was pretty much exactly what I expected. A reliable 3rd option that can move around and attack defenses from multiple WR slots. He did struggle with some drops in college, so wasn't expecting him to be perfect there, even for how natural he is catching the ball. That said, after his wrist got healthy from the preseason fracture, he was mostly sure-handed. DK and Ty are pretty much always going to get a bulk of the targets. I don't think we'll do the 3 TE thing much this year, which automatically unlocks more opportunities for JSN to be on the field.
Based on everything that I had heard, most people seemed in consensus that he would be amazing in the slot and useless outside. That was the biggest thing that surprised me - more his usage inside/outside. His role and production was about what I expected but I didn't expect how he got it.
@@The_Legion_of_12s I will say, JSN is a difficult player to project. When you watch him, he feels like he should only work in the slot and can definitely manage there (has elite spacial awareness, a very natural feel for holes in the defense, where to settle down, gaining leverage on wheels, that sort of thing). But if you look at his overall profile he tends to work better in space and as you said in the video, isn't an elite route runner, which lends itself to a multitude of outside alignments. I never understood the projections of slot-only, they made little sense to me, when most of his damage was done on the outside in college at an elite level.
I see more of a feel player and a gliding athlete, than a precise player. Projects far differently than say, Zay Flowers, who is a quick, precision-based assassin as a route runner. JSN feels the space and adjusts instinctually to his surroundings. That out route that you highlighted around the 4 minute mark, JSN is aligning himself to catch the ball and glide towards a first down. The throw is extremely late and inside by Geno, or he makes the catch and has the first easily. No denying the route was bubbled, but it would be interesting to know what the down was on this play to understand if JSN was really aware of where he needed to get to and crept toward the marker.
Anyhow, I thought once they started utilizing him a little better towards the 2nd half of the season and his wrist healed, he was really, really good. We also have to remember, he had basically taken a year off and was still recovering from injuries throughout the summer. So it did take him some time to really readjust to the speed of the game. And then he broke his wrist and was battling that for the first several weeks as well.
"I loved the video, but I have some disagreements. For example, the out route he ran against Carolina was, in my opinion, well executed but marred by a poorly thrown ball. The route he ran is what my coaches call a 'speed out'-you don't slow down at the top of the route and run 2 yards past your marker, then curve back to the marker and turn your chest to the QB. This not only makes the throw easier but also positions your body between the ball and the defender. The route you suggested was a square out, where you run to your marker and make a 90-degree cut to the sideline. Honestly, I don’t think he did anything wrong here, besides waiting for the ball to come to him instead of attacking it in the air. As for his catching, he had a broken wrist he played through at the beginning of the year. By the end of the year, as you mentioned, his catches were elite, like the one-handed catch against the 49ers and the game-winner against the Eagles. Regarding his work over the middle, I don’t think that was on him. We haven’t been able to effectively attack the middle of the field for years now, and Pete just avoided the middle like it was the plague, lol. But you’re definitely right, he has some flaws such as his speed, but I think his hands are elite (when his wrist isn’t broken). I think his slot work is good but just not supported by the right play calling. As you mentioned, his outside WR work was a happy surprise, but honestly, I don’t think his screen work is all that impressive-he’s just not an explosive guy. He’s smooth but takes a while to get to full speed. He’s extremely good at RAC because when he’s at full speed, he can still go in any direction due to his good body control and smoothness."

I really appreciate the thoughtful comment. You obviously have a lot of football knowledge. I agree that JSN was running a speed out and it would be ridiculous to ask him to cut at a 90 degree angel, but I do want him to turn it back. Lockett is really good at running a speed out but turning back towards the quarterback and not drifting upfield. I should have clarified in the video, but there is nothing wrong with rounding the top of the route but I want him to try to flatten that out more after the cut so he doesn't fall upfield. I agree that Pete was averse to throwing over the middle of the field but also on tape I rarely saw JSN "win" on the limited times he was asked to run over the middle. @@The_Legion_of_12s He has a play against Roquan where he attacks him in the middle and hangs onto the ball. I thought that was a bit underrated considering Roquan is the #1 LB (Warner is tad bit better in pass coverage if debating).

Yes and no. I should've clarified better. I don't have any problem with the actual break of his route because like you said that is just how a quick out works. But if you watch guys like Lockett, he does a great job of carving it back towards the quarterback to regain the better angle.

I expect him and Lockett to kinda swap roles if that makes sense meaning jsn will be the established 2nd option outside of dk and Lockett being a reliable 3rd target
Yeah that makes sense. I think theres going to be a lot less of 1 and 2 WR sets so JSN should get on the field more regardless, which I'm looking forward to.
I wouldn't overanalyze 'the crispness of route running.' Most good route running is about getting to a spot within a certain amount of time. Not every out route needs to cut at 90 degrees-it doesn't magically make you more open or more difficult to cover. All we're trying to do is obtain leverage on the defensive back and work to open space for the QB to have an open passing lane. Tyreek Hill and Justin Jefferson don't always snap off 90 degree routes, but it doesn't matter because they never lose momentum and get to their spot faster than the DB can anticipate their movements.
I agree. I shouldn't have emphasized that as much as I did. I didn't really expect like a 90 degree angle, because that is unrealistic. He just needed to bend the route back in the end to cut off that angle.

Weird is the best way to describe his first year. Everyone said he can't play outside and he will dominate inside but he was actually way better outside than in the slot.

I totally should've mentioned that! The hands weren't really a big concern but the broken wrist definitely didn't help early on.

I am personally a Geno supporter, but I also get this. If he is not the long term answer and if you think that this team isn't built to win in the short term, then I get it. I think he can be more than that but we will have to see in 2024. Thanks for watching!
This is confusing. People didn't think he'd be a good slot receiver out of college. The Seahawks forced him into that role. I think you've forgotten this. The deep threat aspect isn't surprising in the least.
Maybe that's what some analysits said but most thought he was a true slot and wouldn't have the deep speed.

@@The_Legion_of_12s Then I don't know why anyone was so excited about him. That's usually reserved for receivers without speed or ability to gain separation on long routes. Amon-Ra St-Brown _can't_ get open down the field consistently. That's why he does so well in Ben Johnson's tightly-controlled offense.
@@ChewsCarefully Slot receivers have been major players in the NFL for like 2 decades. Honestly at this point, slot is more descriptive than an insult. Having an impactful slot receiver is huge in building a complete offense. I was excited about JSN and I still am because slot WR is an important position for consistently moving the chains - which is something the hawks have struggled with.

This is very pessimistic. JSN is going to have a huge jump with Grubb. The eye test shows if utilized properly he’ll be top 10 receiver in the league
I hope so and I’m glad you found me to be pessimistic. I often feel like I come off as too much of an optimist so…
I have a bunch of hope for JSN and i think I talked about his upside in the video. If he can continue to build on what he showed from the outside and then add what he showed from the slot in college he can be dynamic. He certainly has flashed but now he just needs to put it all together.
Broken play receiver
JSN is a bust. Prime example you think any team would trade a first for him.
I mean.... no. But which players would you trade the hawks first right now from last years draft. Just going off the top of my head i would take CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Jalen Carter, Paris Johnson and Darnell Wright. Idk if you would add more to that list but "you can't trade him for a first a year later" is not a good way to determine if he is a bust or not. I don't know if he will be worth the pick, but that does not mean he is a bust right now.
Geno threw for 658 less yards with a 5.1% dip in completion percentage. He did this with a better receiving core than Seattle had last year. There's the problem right there.
Jsn is the furthest thing from a bust.
