The story of the Happy Prince dwells upon the themes like social injustice, redemptive power of love and the loss of innocence. In this story, we come across a statue, who, at one time, a real Prince. When the Prince was alive, he was a happy person. He lived in the palace and did not know about human suffering. His life was full of joys. Upon his death, his statue was built at the top of a tall column in the city.
The statue was covered all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword-hilt. The statue of the Happy Prince looked beautiful and everyone in the city loved to see their Prince. Since he was placed high above the city, on a tall column, the Prince was able to witness all the sorrows and sufferings which the common people faced in their daily life.
But the Prince remained ignorant of them during his lifetime. This made the Prince, once happy, very sad. His eyes got watered and large drops of tears began to run down his golden cheeks. A little swallow, who had alighted between the feet of the Happy Prince to spend the night there, became curious to know where did the drops of water fall from. He looked up and saw the eyes of the Happy Prince full of tears.
The bird took pity on the Prince and became ready to assist him in his desire to ease the sufferings of the common people. He became the messenger of the Prince and agreed to remove the fine gold and jewels from his statue to distribute them among the poor and the needy.
He started with plucking the ruby from the Prince’s sword and giving it to the seamstress who had no money to feed her ailing child. Then he plucked a sapphire from one of the eyes of the statue and gave it to the playwright who was too poor to make fire in the winter to continue his writing. He was also very hungry and feeling weak.
One day, the Prince saw a match girl who was being beaten by her father for letting her matches fall in the gutter. The Prince’s heart filled with pity for the girl. He immediately commanded the swallow to pluck out his other eye and help the girl.
But the swallow was not ready to do so because this would make the Prince completely blind. On being insisted, he plucked out the Prince’s other eye, swooped past the match girl, and slipped the jewel ‘ into the palm of her hand. The little bird decided not to leave the company of the Happy Prince who had gone blind now. Although the Prince was not able to see the sorrows or sufferings any more, he knew it was there. So he instructed the bird to take off the fine gold he was covered with and give it to the poor.
The bird followed his words and picked off leaf after leaf of the gold, till the Happy Prince looked quite dull and grey. Then the snow came and the poor little swallow grew older and colder. But he did not leave the Prince. Eventually, he grew weak and died from exposure and exhaustion. Just at that moment a curious crack sounded inside the statue, as if something had broken.
It was, in fact, the leaden heart that had snapped right in two at the loss of the sweet and kind swallow. The statue was no more beautiful and useful. It stood deserted. So, the Town Councillors and the Mayor pulled it down. Then they melted the statue in a furnace but the broken heart did not melt. So, they threw it on a dust-heap where the dead swallow was lying.
When God asked one of His Angels to bring the two most precious things in the city, the Angel brought him the leaden heart and the dead bird. God welcomed the two in His garden of Paradise and deemed them beautiful creations.

    [02/11, 7:21 PM] ABHIJIT: 😭
[02/11, 7:22 PM] Anshuman: This is a story about a homoeopathic doctor during his early career days. The narrator of this story is the doctor himself, where he narrates this story to some individuals. In this story, the doctor tells us that he lived in a small rented room during that time.
Furthermore, the tiles of the room were supported by gables which in turn were supported by the beam. Moreover, rats were roaming all over the room and there was no electricity supply. Hence, the room was in a dire state.
In the doctors’ story, it was the summer season going on and it was night. The doctor came back to his room after finishing his meal at a restaurant. The room was certainly dark due to lack of electricity. As such the doctor made use of a kerosene lamp to lighten up his room. The doctor also took off his coat and shirt.
There were two windows in the room that were opened by him. After sitting on a chair, the doctor took a medical book to read. On the table, there was a large mirror and a lamp.
Due to the immense summer heat, it was too hot for the doctor to sleep. So, he began to gaze in the mirror and became lost in admiring himself. Furthermore, whilst admiring himself, a desire came in him to look more presentable. Gradually, there was a shifting of his thoughts from self-admiration to future marriage. The doctor thought of marrying a rich doctor, who was rich and fat.
The doctor didn’t pay much attention to the sudden silence and the scampering from the rats came to a halt. Furthermore, there was a sound of something falling but the doctor was slow to react. By the time, he had a look, there was a snake wriggling on the back of the chair. Soon, the snake coiled on the left arm of the doctor. The snake was merely inches away from his face. Consequently, the doctor went into a deep shock and became like a statue. At this moment, the doctor felt the presence of God. It seems that this snake was like a punishment from God to the doctor due to his being too arrogant. Soon, he came to the realization that he a mere human and he should not boast.
At this realization of his true worth, the snake left the doctor and moved towards the mirror. As such, the doctor silently escaped and his life was saved. After the conclusion of the doctor’s narrative, some interested listeners asked him some questions related to the story.

    [31/10, 7:07 PM] Anshuman: Question 5.
Had he earned any money before that? In what way?
    Answer:
Yes, he earned money before also. He used to collect the tamarind seeds and sell them to a provision shop on the Mosque Street. A day’s collection would fetch him the princely sum of one anna.
II. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (about 30 words).
    Question 1.
    How does the author describe:
    his father
    his mother
    himself?
    Answer:
The author describes his father as a wise and generous person. He felt happy when he helped others. He did not have much formal education and riches. He was a man of confidence and great wisdom. He avoided inessential comforts and luxuries.
His mother was a noble and kind- hearted woman. She used to feed a large number of people. She had all the attributes of a typical Indian mother.
I was born into a middle-class Tamil family. I was a short boy with rather undistinguished looks, born to tall and handsome parents. I studied physics and aerospace engineering and became a scientist.
    Question 2.
What characteristics does he say he inherited from his parents?
    Answer:
The author inherited humility and benevolence from his parents. He learnt lessons in honesty and integrity from his parents. He was self-disciplined because of his parents’ exemplary life.
    [31/10, 7:07 PM] Anshuman: Question 1.
“ On the whole, the small society of Rameswaram was very rigid in terms of the segregation of different social groups,” says the author.
Which social groups does he mention? Were these groups easily identifiable (for example, by the way they dressed)?
Were they aware only of their differences or did they also naturally share friendships and experiences? (Think of the bedtime stories in Kalam’s house; of who his friends were ; and of what used to take place in the pond near his house.)
The author speaks both of people who were very aware of the differences among them and those who tried to bridge these differences. Can you identify such people in the text?
Narrate two incidents that show how differences can be created, and also how they can be resolved. How can people change their attitudes?
    Answer:
The author talks about the people who belong to various castes and follow various religious preachings. Yes, these groups were easily identifiable. Their dressing, traditions, culture and rituals were different.
They did share their personal experiences and friendships. Lakshmana Sastry summoned the teacher who separated the author and his friend in the class and told him that he should not spread the poison of social inequality and communal intolerance in the minds of innocent children.
The school teacher encouraged communal differences and Lakshmana Sastry and Sivasubramania Iyer discouraged this malpractice.
The influential people can do both the things. A teacher has the ability to bridge communal differences and can play with sentiments of the innocent and ignorant people. This is what the new teacher did. But the Science teacher Sivasubramania Iyer changed his wife’s attitude and showed her the right path.
    Question 2.
Why did Abdul Kalam want to leave Rameswaram?
What did his father say to this?
What do you think his words mean? Why do you think he spoke those words?
    Answer:
Abdul Kalam wanted to leave Rameswaram to study at the district headquarters in Ramanathapuram.
His father said that he knew he had to go away to grow. He gave the example of a seagull and said that a seagull flies across the sun alone and without a nest.
He spoke these words because he intended to hone his skills. He knew the harsh reality of life that children may have to live far from their parents to make their career and earn their livelihood. So he showed his wisdom and intelligence in uttering these words
    [31/10, 7:08 PM] Anshuman: Question 2.
    Now answer the following questions.
    1. What are the things that can erupt? Use examples to explain the various meanings of erupt. Now do the same for the word surge. What things can surge?
    2. What are the meanings of the word trace and which of the meanings is closest to the word in the text?
    3. Can you find the word undistinguished in your dictionary? (If not, look up the word distinguished and say what undistinguished must mean.)
    [31/10, 7:08 PM] Anshuman: Answers:
    1. An earthquake can erupt. Emotions can erupt. Anger can erupt.
Example: An earthquake erupted in Sicily last night.
Surge means a sudden powerful forward or upward movement. A wave surges. A crowd surges. A storm surges.
Example: Birds search for fish when waves surge towards the shore.
    2. ‘Trace’ means to find out, to copy, to draw an outline, etc. ‘Finding out’ is the closest meaning to ‘trace’ in the text.
    3. I can’t find the word ‘undistinguished’ in my dictionary because it is not the root word. It is there under the word ‘distinguished’ because ‘undistinguished’ is opposite to ‘distinguished’. It means: not specific, not prominent, not distinct, etc.

[22/01, 7:21 PM] ABHIJIT: The lesson "The Beggar" was written by Anton Chekhov. The story opens with a beggar named Lushkoff was begging alms to an advocate named Sergei. The beggar said that he was a school teacher who had lost his job by a conspiracy of his colleagues. While seeing the beggar's appearance, Sergei remembered that he had seen him previously at Savodiya street, claiming that he was a student who was expelled from school. Sergei became angry after hearing his lies and told him that he would call the cop. Then Lushkoff admitted that he had told the lies, and he was a member of a Russian choir and was expelled out due to his drunkenness. After hearing the truth, Sergei asked him whether he would like to chop wood for him. Then Lushkoff accepted the offer and went along with Sergei. Sergei asked his cook Olga to make the beggar chop wood. The beggar was unable to chop the wood because of the overconsumption of vodka. After some time, Olga informed Sergei that he had chopped all the wood. Lushkoff was paid after his job. Later, Sergei decided to shift his house. He asked Lushkoff to help him in packing the furniture. After that, he offered him some work in his friend's company. Two years later, Sergei met Lushkoff outside the theatre. Sergei felt happy on seeing his changes. Lushkoff said that he was changed because of the kind words and good deeds of the cook olga
[22/01, 7:24 PM] ABHIJIT: Lushkoff was a middle-aged man and belonged to the Russian choir. He was not a bom beggar. He was sacked from the choir because of his drinking habits. He became a beggar by choice as he did not like to work hard at that stage.
[22/01, 7:25 PM] ABHIJIT: Answer: Lushkoff says that he was sent away from the Russian choir because of his being an alcoholic. He tells lies because if he told this truth, no one would ever help him or give him money.
[22/01, 7:25 PM] ABHIJIT: Answer: No, he is not a willing worker. Alcohol has undermined his strength, and he has no inclination to do any work. He agrees to chop wood for Sergei not because he is hungry or wants to work but because he is ashamed and trapped by his own words.
[22/01, 7:25 PM] ABHIJIT: Answer: Sergei says, “I am happy that my words have taken effect.” He says so because he thinks that he is the reason why Lushkoff became a notary from being a beggar. This is partly true, but Sergei is not the only one who made Lushkoff become who he is now.
Lushkoff says that although he is obliged to Sergei for showing him the right path and letting him do the work of chopping wood at his home, his transformation is a result of Sergei’s cook, Olga. She was the one who chopped wood and not Lushkoff.
[22/01, 7:26 PM] ABHIJIT: Answer: Lushkoff is earning thirty-five roubles a month. He is obliged to Sergei because if he hadn’t come to Sergei, then he still might have been a beggar telling the same old lies of being a teacher or a student. But Sergei helped him get out of the pit by giving him work.
[22/01, 7:26 PM] ABHIJIT: Answer: Sergei took Lushkoff to his home and gave him the task of chopping wood. He asked Olga, his cook, to take Lushkoff to the wood shed and to let him chop wood.
When Lushkoff becomes a notary and accidentally meets Sergei, he tells him that all that while, Olga was the one who chopped wood. She felt pity for Lushkoff and did the chopping herself instead of letting Lushkoff do it.
