  • Last week I joined our friend a former watch dealer Paul Thorpe for a chat on his popular CZcams channel. We discussed the latest new from Rolex where they have just introduced a new certified pre-owned programme. With over 25000 views in just a few days we enjoyed the chat as did our mutual audience and hence I wanted to share it with you today.
In other watch new we sadly learnt of a major scale theft from a large European watch dealer who had over 1000 watches stolen that were on consignment. We discuss the pros and cons of consigning your watch and what you should consider if choosing this route to sale.
You can see more of Paul Thorpe videos via this link.

Just watched a video by Osin O’Maley where he says with 100% confidence Rolex will be selling the Exhibition Only watches as pre owned. Makes complete sense as they can’t be sold as new after being tried by a gazillion people during their stay at the AD’s.

Apparently the pre-owned scheme will only sell watches 3+ years old so I doubt that’ll be the case. Who knows though.

    Another quick comment Chaps,
Watchmaster had my Omega Speedy for 365 Days on consignment.
    They didn’t sell it.
I commented to Paul on his video about the Watchmaster situation.
My personal experience with Watchmaster was awful !!!

I would definitely buy my Rolex ( When I can afford one ) from EWC rather than any AD.

      Thanks Jonathan you’re a gentleman.
I completely agree with your analogy of the Used and Approved car sector.
      Take care,
      Lance.

I'm sorry but this is not a good thing for customers. It's just more cash for rolex and grey market dealers. I don't understand how can a dealer say that it's good for customers. Even AD are telling that this is not good for people.

Rolex are a bunch of Shysters. I’m lucky to own 6 - but maybe now after all of these shenanigans I’ve lost the will to wear that name on my wrist with any sense of pride. I for one, have bought my last Rolex.

The Rolex CPO program is about 30 years too late if it's only perceived as a used watch scheme. Please keep in mind that today at least 1 in every 4 Swiss luxury watches out there are Rolex, they are market leaders and surely want to remain so. I believe they have been building up the price out levels and have helped the grey market grow by restricting inventory. Now they are coming for the extra margin as global trends are stacking up against them. so it will be interesting to see what prices ADs will be willing to pay for used inventory, does anyone actually believe they will be buying used watches? this move will shrink grey market inventory to truly old and less desirable pieces and many will just have to close the shop, they may become like antique watch dealers.
