- My first product review! I'm by no means an expert, just my own personal opinions. Disclaimer***In the video I mention that the 60L could be used as a carryon for air travel but your experience may vary depending on how full the bag is packed and the specific airline's carryon restrictions. The duffel's specs are slightly over the requirements of most airlines but the flexibility of the bag should allow it to fit in most overhead bins***. Overall love the bag! Update: I recently purchase a second Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 60L! I've added the unboxing and a strap install video on my channel. Be sure to check it out. Thanks for watching!

Great review!
Thanks Quinton!
thank you for this review. Just ordered myself one too!
Hi Shavone! I hope you enjoy the bag. Would be interested in your thoughts once you get the bag. Take care!
yeah should be here in a few days. I'll let you know
hey so the bag came in a while back but i never had the chance to use it until last week. it was amazing. I have zero complaints. I mostly carried it, but I used it as a back back when standing in lines at the airport. It wasn't too big to carry it on the plane with me and it was just right to fill all my stuff for a 5 day trip. To fold the bag back into the small form you have to close the outter zipper and open the inner zipper turn the whole thing upside down and start folding inward. Took me all of 2 minutes. it's currently tucked in my closet until my next trip. such a sweet bag worth every penny
Hi Shavone! That's awesome! Thank you so much for taking time to leave your thoughts and impression of the bag! I love it! Hopefully this may help someone else who's on the fence about the bag. I've not tried to fold the bag back but I'm going to give it a try now. Thanks again and safe travels!!!
Great job man
Thank you Jared! Take care!
Bought this and the 45L at rei. Love them both. You can use carabiners to clip the handles to the daisy chain when wearing as a backpack.
Thanks Jascha! Great tip for the handles!
I own 3 of these bags. Different sizes. Used the 60L in backpack mode walking from the ferries in Istanbul to my hotel, all up hill and it was very comfortable. When I don't use them they serve as storage.
Hi Global Adventurer! I love hearing real work experience, thanks. I like the idea of using for storage when you're not using the bag, I hadn't thought of that! Thanks again for sharing! Safe travels!!!
@@ChrisU Thank you for your video! Happy trails🚶
Great reviews mate !
Would you recommend the 60L as a sport bag ? I feel the only issue with those type of bags is the lack of structure when not fully packed.
Thanks
Thanks Fiftoufi! I think the 60L is a great general purpose or "do all" bag. I would usually pick The North Face Base Camp duffel Small as my "do all" bag, but if you need additional space the Patagonia 60L is just as capable. It can fit many different needs in my opinion and great to throw a lot of "stuff" in. You are right though, the bag lacks structure when not full but it does carry the weight well. Hope this helps. Take care!
sweet, thank you for reviewing. i can't decide between patagonia and the north face duffle, even though i watched all three of your videos. which one is more comfortable carrying longer distances? thank you :)
Hi Pacinka! Great question! If I had to pick, my personal preference as far as comfort goes would be the North Face duffels. With that being said, the Patagonia bags are not uncomfortable by any means. You could carry either for long distances with no issue besides how heavy the bag is packed. Both are great quality duffels. To me it usually comes down to how much do I need to fit in the bag and how do I intend to use the bag. I feel the North Face Base Camp S is probably the best "do all" bag coming in around 50L but the Patagonia 60L gives you a bit more flexibility outside of air travel. You really can't go wrong with either though. Hope this helps and doesn't complicate things more for you. Thanks for your question! Take care!
Chris can you measure this using a tape measure? Is it really 25 x 13 x 10 inches? It looks smaller. Trying to figure out if this will fit into the carryon without stress.
Thank you for a great video. Thinking about getting a 60L one for international travel and don’t want to check it in. Did you have trouble taking it on the plane as carry on?
Hi Aykut! I had originally purchased the bag in hopes of using it on an international trip but, so far, have only used on a US domestic flight as a carry-on and didn't have any issues. The bag has lots of room, but to me the key is to not over pack the bag. I always do a quick measurement check to ensure it fits the specific airline/s carry-on requirements. I think it's a great "do all" bag and I recommend taking a look. Thanks and safe travels!
Thank you Chris. If it worked as a carry on in the domestic flights, it should be okay then for transatlantic flights as the overhead space tends to be bigger. Will be ordering soon. :)
Great! I appreciate your comment! I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the bag when you receive it. Take care!
Thanks. I’m scheduled for a Turkey and an India trip and am planning to take this with me as my carry on (and I can’t say I am a light packer). I’ll let you know how it does and if I have any issues carrying it on the plane. Safe travels to you as well.
Aykut Ozger Hey how did this bag work for your international travels? I’m thinking about buying it for the same type of trip!
Hey Chris! Great vid! Wondering if you've ever travelled on Delta using this as a carry-on...
Hey Speeding777! Thank you! Haven’t had the chance to use on Delta yet. Will be flying with them soon but thinking about using another set up. Thanks again!
Speeding777 my friend just used them as a carry on with delta last week with no problems
Thanks, Chris! Any idea how much weight was in the bag? I am going on a safari next summer and am looking at choices, and I like this bag. I am wondering whether or not I (61 year old female, healthy) can handle a packed duffle.
Hi Patrice! Thank you! I'm not sure how much weight I had in the bag at the time, but I'll try to recreate what I had packed and report back. That's really the only concern my wife has had with the bag too, having the weight on her back opposed to rolling. I feel the bag would handle the trip very well though. Save travels!
RangerRoll those clothes my man! You’ll be able to pack twice as much!
Lol, thanks Joshua! I may have to google or CZcams that! Take care!
Je l'ai utilisé il est super 👍👏👌☔
Hi Chris, thank you for the video. I am still doubting If I should buy the 70L or the 60L capacity. I want them for my 15 year old children for schools trips that lasts 5 -7 days. Shoould I stick to the 60L since can be used as a carry -on? Maybe 70L would be too heavy for them to carry?
Hey Gabriela! I would personally recommend a 60L bag. It should be plenty of room for most, and I feel it would be a more versatile option. Like you mention, the fact you could use it as a carry-on is also a plus. The only downfall now is that Patagonia no longer makes the 60L Black Hole duffel. Overall, I feel that a 50L-60L duffel would be a great all around travel bag with plenty of space. Take care!
Good Review, thanks. Nice bag, but seriously let down by not having a lockable zip.
Thank you! I love the bag but agree 100%. Lockable zippers should be standard.
Do a review on the north face base camp duffel medium
Hi Harrison offroads! I would love to take a look at the North Face Base Camp in medium. It's on my list and i would love to see how it compares to the 60L Black Hole duffel. May need to take a look soon. Thanks for the comment!
If I was to get the 90L, could that be carry on compliant?
Hi Kameron Brown! Great question! I would be hesitant to use the 90L for a carry on, as the listed dimensions are 29x15.5x11. The 60L would be the largest Black Hole duffel I would use for carry on, and even then I would be careful not to overfill. Take care!
Hey Chris good review mate. How's the bag been holding up?
Hi dom0! Thank you! The bag has held up very good. I have 2 of these 60 liter bags. I bought this bag for my wife but she ultimately decided not to use it (may be a future giveaway!) because she likes using rolling bags. I have the brown version and have tried to be as rough as possible with it and it has done unbelievably well. I feel this bag will last me forever. I also have the 45 liter in black and it’s also a solid choice. Take care!
@@ChrisU awesome to hear! Can't wait to put my new bag to the test!
My problem w/ this type of bag is when in cold weather it’s hard to open the outside material gets hard and crunchy? If that makes sense.
Also, this bag is missing outside cinch straps(for me)in the middle.
Hi Bill! Very interesting! I haven't experienced this, but good to know! Thanks for the comment!
Chris U Yeah I’ve been through my share of the NF Base Camp Duffles which are very nice aside from the above
The NF Customer Service is garbage as well
which is why I chose theREI Big Haul Duffles this time
Sounds like I need to check out the REI duffel! Thanks!
Is this size carry on size? I want to get a bag for short trips that I wouldn't need to have a checkin luggage.
Hi amart! The short answer is yes but... The bag dimensions when full would be too large but, since it's a soft sided bag, I recommend to not over pack the bag. By leaving space, it should give you the flexibility to fit within the airlines carry-on requirements. To be on the safe side though, it's always a good idea to pull out a tape measure to double check the size after you've packed the bag. If you have any concerns using this bag, I suggest looking at The North Face Base Camp Duffel Small and/or the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 45 liter. Take care!
Good review. Go Dodgers.
Hi Bigg Redd! Thanks! Lol!!!
Wish i could find this color online somewhere, can not find it anywhere. Any suggestions?
Hi TheMrwhite32! I bought this bag on eBags.com. I checked around, including eBags.com, and I'm not seeing it either. It may have been discontinued. I'll let you know if I come across one. Take care!
Chris U thank you so much for the help! That’s an awesome looking bag
You're welcome! I usually prefer black but I really like the yellow. Hard to believe they may have discontinued the color.
Chris U wouldn’t want to sell yours would ya? Lol
would i be able to pack for a 10 day trip with it?
Hey _alimgdzl! Great but tough question. 60L is a lot of space when compared with most carry-on bags, which typically are between 38L-45L. If you're a "light" packer it may be possible but, if you're flying, you may have to check the bag depending on how "full" the bag appears. Although not a heavy bag, weight may become a factor as well when flying and/or carrying on your back. I believe it comes down to how much you need to pack for 10 days. Sorry I can't more directly answer your question : ) Overall a great bag. Take care!
cheers Chris U ! i think i might just go for it!
