Today I’m planting up Grace - an English David Austin Shrub Rose. In this video I give you requirements on how to get the most out of your potted roses for many years to come.
I show you exactly what soil mix I have used time and time again. And for those who have already seen my previous years of potted roses, you will know they are a huge success every year - producing abundant blooms and great health.

This birdsong in the background is heavenly
What a truly heavenly garden, and so much adoring bird song🥰
Der Video hat mir sehr gut 👍🏽 gefallen.
Es zeigt wie man Rosen 🌹 untopft.
Das ist sehr wichtig für die junge Pflanzen!!!
Dankeschön Darren!
I have never been very good at container plant's, but this video, is making me want to give it another go..might need a few more rose varieties in my garden 😉🌹🥀
That's so relaxing to watch Darren. Thanks for the tips in doing potted rose.
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing plants lovely ❤❤
I love this video.
Love watching you videos always brightens my day 🌹💐🌸🌺🌷🌻🌼❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Perfect!
Great video, D! Looks very professional. 😜 'Grace' is definitely a variety I'd love to add to my collection! Absolutely loves her petal shape! 😍 Can't wait for more updates on your garden throughout the growing season. Keeps me entertained whilest my roses here in South Africa is winding down for winter.
You are the Harwood rose. I LOVE all your videos. I'm in Australia so compassionately hoping your garden is surviving heat.
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️ this terrible warmth will be ending by Monday hopefully… fingers crossed 🥵 Stay safe my love xx
As always, beautiful!
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Great job
Well done Darren. “YESS!” 😂 Say hello to Ava! ✌️
Hi Darren... excellent soil and food for Grace...good choice..we enjoyed your videos... thanks a lot...🍄💮🌼🦋🌺🌱🌿🌱🍄😘🤩💮🌹🌹🌹💗😎🖐️☺️bye dear.. take care yourself...
I also planted a Grace rose this weekend!
Hi Darren, nicely done💪🙌🙌🙌...i have to admit my Austins in Potts perform much better than in the Flowerbed in High Summer, sadly our Summers have turned very Hot and dry so the pottet once get the advantage of Daily watering and don't have to fight the sandy soil we have here...i got about 11 Austins in Potts, Minimum of 50cm high and they seem to like it...my newest Arrival is "Rosemoore" and i can't wait to see it bloom...have a lovely Sunday....Take Care... Dagmar from Germany 🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️
Lovely 🌹Grace has a beautiful home ! 👍🏼🌷
Thank you 😊 🌹♥️
Yes your garden is indeed really beautiful & the singing of the birds adds to the bucolic ambience. Do you have a duchess of Cornwall rose. I would love to see you have it in this romantic paradise of yours.
I have always planted roses in the ground but I think I will give it a go planting a rose like Roald Dahl in a pot following your expert advice!! Thank you for sharing!! 💖🥀🥀🥀
Good informative video, I dont really tend to mix compost types for containers just putting one type of compost per pot, so I hope my container plants will still do well. Also I feed in the spring with Miracle Gro solution.
Thanks Darren I’ve got some in pots some are not doing to well perhaps they need repotting
Hi Darren! Lovely video as always! ❤️ I'm curious, in the first year would you recommend putting another plant in the pot (maybe a small trailing annual) while the rose is still small to add interest? Or is this a no no? 🤔
I now have a potted David Austin Alnwick rose. I'm so in love. I want to be good to her. I'll try the tomato feed. I gave her a good feed when I potted her this spring and beginning of July, got it. I'm very concerned about the winter. I'm debating if I should wrap her in newspaper and huddle up all my larger pots around her up close to the building or see if I can get it inside.
Aww thanks so much. Thisnis really so very helpful. You are a master. I think that I killed my potted rose by adding slow release nitrogen. How often should one feed a potted rose? What is a tomato feed? 8 so adore your garden especially the Bay Leaf green painted bench, arch and garden shed. Beautifu Darren xx
Hi Darren, I am in the UK too, when do you think is the best time to put roses in pots ?
I didn’t know you were supposed to bury the bud union, is my rose going to be ok?
Beautiful gardens, so beautiful.
Thankyou for your secret rose soil mix with the regular 🍅 fertiliser.
I myself have just nowl potted and put in ground my first roses. I had no idea in soil. Im in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and rang up a nursery and they delivered a premium potting mix to my front lawn and a 5 star soil with cow Manure. I have put about half of each. I am worried it might be too heavy with the 50 of the 5 star soil. But i couldn't reason my way out of using it that way for needed nutrition. I just hope the roots dont become water logged at some stage.
Ive planted 9 bare roots 9 days ago.
I have anothet 12 bare roots coming in mid August, of which will be potted for my observationon on performance. Our Spring begins ist September.
I will follow what you have done with the tomato feeder.
Can you tell me at what stage with the bare roots would I begin the first feed? Thankyou.
Hello! Feed in spring and again after the first flush. And use tomato fertiliser when you see rose buds. Wow! So many new gems you have. Enjoy and keep in touch 💚💚💚💚🥰
Thank you for the soil mix 😊 ya
Very useful 👍
Peat would be too acidic for roses.
Most welcome :)
I wanted to ask you since you have experience with David Austin roses are you able to plant them right away or should you give them some time to Adjust to the or the climate ????
Interesting you put the bud union below the soil. There is so much differing opinions on that subject lol!
I’ve potted 3 David Austin roses in pots following your tutorial they are now in bud and looking great. Interesting about the tomato feed I shall do that. What month do you start doing that.
Yes I’m curious about the tomato feed
yes, I am curious about tomatoes feeds? do you mean tomatoes fertilizer once a week?
Yes. I have heard that roses are greedy plants and in a pot need a weak feed every 2 weeks.
So hers the? Can I overwinter a container David Austin Alnwick rose wrapped in newspaper against my building and surrounded by other pots?
I have a question that really stop me from potting a rose or any plant. I'm planning to travel this summer a long holiday for one month and 10 days. Does that will affect the potted rose ? I always imagine that they will dry completely out and die
Darren, how long before you'll have to renew the mix?
I will renew the soil in 6 years time. Some people might leave it for 10 years. :)
How do you keep admins and rose slugs gone please?
Hi Darren - Just a quick question: Why did you plant this rose in a pot with the bud union 2-inches below the soil level? Isn't that to low? Won't it cause rot? (PB from the USA).
Hello! It’s a practise very well known - it prevents wind rock. And it doesn’t rot, in fact, it encourages more root growth :)
@@darren-harwood Thanks Darren, well the video was brilliant and since I grow all of my roses in pots I certainly appreciate this video. Thank you again Darren!
@@patrickbowen5398 really happy to help, my friend 💚
@@darren-harwood BTW Darren - do you have a video on doing rose cuttings? I've never done it and could use a good tutorial. Thanks.
Lol… the sound of the trickling water makes you want to what? Lol

Continued. Or I could give her away in the fall to someone who could put her in the ground.😢
