Black Mask is definitely my second favorite Batman Villain besides The Joker.
I always thought black mask was cool really liked his character but unfortunately he's heavily underrated like most members of Batman's rogues gallery.
Batman has the most recognizable and popular rouges galleries in all comics, people who have never read an issue or seen an episode can usually name 3-5 villians. How is his rouges gallery "underrated"?

Casual fans of Batman could name 3-5 villains Yes, but I’m very positive almost everybody would say the same names. Joker, Two Face, Riddler, Penguin, Bane people like that. But there’s soooooo much more to his rogues gallery and other members that don’t get enough love

The original Black Mask story definitely had an influence on Batman '89. One of Joker's big plots in the movie was to poison cosmetics products.
Samm Hamm who wrote the screeplay to Batman '89 and Batman Returns confirms the connection.
He also said that the look of Alicia's mannequin like mask was inspired by the horror movie _Eyes Without a Face_ which features a disfigured woman who hides behind a similar mask. (Recommended watchl
I get the feeling Tim Burton borrowed some elements from Black Mask to make '89 Joker. Definitely the disfiguring Alicia's face and her wearing a mask.
Finally! Also, he was a great Akrham Origins Villain In my opinion. And great In Nightwing.

Definitely going to remember black mask from now on. People really are passing him up such a good character he needs more attention and to be part of more

Black mask in origins is my favorite, was true to his mob boss character! Hell you even get to destroy all his drugs! Damn shame they made him to be the top villain but then eventually made him just a shitty side quest villain
Black Mask was ok in "Under the Red Hood", but I'm still a bit bummed that they'd removed so much of his appearances in this storyline... in the comics he's a serious threat, but in the loose adaptation he got the shaft again in favorit of Joker.
Oh well, after "Origins" nothing can surprise me anymore =/

They had to downsize everybody's role from the comics to fit the movie. Black Mask did way more in the "Under the Red Hood" comic, but if they decided to faithfully adapt the comics bit-by-bit, it'd would've went on for too long.
@@cybrid37 - I know, I know... well, except Joker; in the comics his only apparition is at the end when Jason has him locked up. They buffed his role for the movie, which I'm not complaining about; great version.
And they replaced the trio Count Vertigo/Captain Nazi/Hyena (provided to Black Mask by Deathstroke & the Society) by the original "Fearsome Hand of Four"...
I guess I can see why they didn't want to put too much Captain Nazi in their cartoon.
Still a very good adaptation IMHO, that makes for a great "comic book movie"; in my DC top 5 for sure.
I never heard of Black Mask until I heard the Birds of Pray was coming out. Cool comic book back story.

You’re the man brother!!! Keep up the good work. I’m a huge nerd/ ex animator.... now living and working as a firefighter for a huge municipality. Ur sight has allowed me to show my kids how in depth and awesomely powerful comics can be as a medium. Heck comics is why I left animation to be a fireman. Heck it’s as close as I can get to being Batman....and not get sent to Arkham!🤣
His conception in the 1980s boiled down to "What if a villain grew up with Bruce Wayne and hated Bruce Wayne more than Batman?" which had never been done before.
Since then stories have featured Harvey Dent, Thomas Elliot, and Oswald Cobblepot as having grown up with Bruce and being his friend.
Roman Sionis's core philosophy which could be summed up as "Everyone wears a mask, and I am tired of pretending. I want everyone to see my true face and your true face." is an intriguing one that doesn't get explored enough when Batman villains are all about their philosophies and perceptions.
What kills me is that the live action film didn't even go into the concept of masks beyond some art pieces of heads/faces. I love Ewan and he was one of the best things about the film but felt like it was missing something excellent.

The black mask is one of my favorite villains of Batman
The Bat, the titular villain from 1959's The Bat, could be an influence on Black Masks appearance, as The Bat wears a black face concealing mask and a suit and hat, albeit The Bat's mask is simply a black featureless mask without any details or eye holes or etc, not a spooky skull like Black Mask's is.
Will definitely read some Black Mask, recently I initiated myself in the world of comic books and graphic novels, yep for the first time, and I am looking for some good comics, thanks for your review and suggestions. I feel like I have entered a rabbit hole of imagination, creativity, rich images and amazing storylines that I seem hard to find in movies and TV series. Comics are awesome!!!

Batman truly has the best villain gallery of anyone. No one comes close. His C-List villains are just as captivating as his A-Listers.
Spiderman? (Doc ock, jackal, hammerhead, tombstone, black tarantula, hobgoblin, red Vulture, shocker, spot, kraven, Etc.)
X-Men (onslaught, bastion, Vulcan, black tom Cassidy, proteus, stryfe, the reavers, Cassandra nova, shadow king, sauron, etc.)
Superman? (Mr.M, mongul, parasite, silver banshee, cyborg superman, livewire, atomic skull, toyman, doomsday, metallo, etc.)
And maybe even the F4 (mole man, ego, red ghost, psycho man, puppet master, the frightful 4, diablo, maker, kang, molecule man, etc.) And thor (mangog, ymir, bloodaxe, the wrecking crew, man beast, ulik, enchantress, malekith, skurge, radioactive man, etc.)

Spiderman only has the sinister 6 Venom and Kraven. The rest are forgettable.
Superman's only truly iconic villain is Lex luthor. You could say Darkseid but he is more of a Justie league villain.

@@skeletoncrew6500 Lets put it this way. None of the villains you mebtioned aside from the ones i acknowledged could hold their own as the main villain in a movie.
If the mcu F4 comes out with Mole man as the Villain i would eat my shoes. Molecule man might work but he is so powerful i could see him being a villain for an avengers movie down the line.
The only way a superman movie would have Cyborg superman is if they did reign of the supermen and included the others like superboy and Steel. Mongol is also more of a justice league villain as seen in infinite crisis when he takes o the trinity by himself.
Parasite is a crap villain. End of discussion
Toyman is alright but he isnt as iconic as any bat villain.
As for Thor you mentioned a lot of B and C list villians but forget A listers like Loki, hela, Surtur, Bor and Gorr the god butcher.
So lets get this straight.

Xmen have 10-12
Superman has 3-4
F4 have 3-4
Thor has 5-6
Batman has.... lets see.

And I love that you just listed all the popular batman villains besides Hugo strange, the ventriloquist, hush, Catwoman and the court of owls
Spidey definitely has more iconic villains than the S6 (not to mention the different incarnations or that they're considered to be the best villiain team)
The 1st electro, sandman, vulture, doc Ock, Kraven, and mysterio
Then hobgoblin (Jason of course) replaced kraven
Then you also have the sinister 7 (with shocker, scorpion and beetle), sandman revenge squad (with venom, kraven's son, and Daniel mysterio ), the sinister 12 (with boomerang, green goblin, chameleon, lizard, hydroman, tombstone, and Hammerhead), and the 8th version (with rhino) which is 17 not including boomerang, kraven's son, Daniel mysterio, or beetle since they're either joke characters (with shocker as the exception) or just not well known
And then you have carnage, kingpin, Mr negative, jackal, morbius, black cat, molten man, and morlun at the very least
And Spidey still makes joke villains look good dispite being jokes
So that's 25 at the very least
And if we are talking truly truly iconic
That just takes away
For Spidey morbius, jackal, Mr negative, molten man, morlun (since he's still new), shocker, tombstone, Hammerhead, hydro man, and maybe chameleon, rhino and scorpion
Which takes away 12
And for bats we can take away zsasz, the court of owls, firefly, deadshot , mad hatter, hush, black mask, lady Shiva, calendar man, the falcones , the ventriloquist, and Hugo strange and maybe Solomon Grundy (mostly due to the fact that he doesn't just fight batman)
Which takes away 13
So that's 13 for Bats and 13 for Spidey
Add the maybes and that's 16 for Spidey and 14 for bats
The only other RG that matches them in quantity and quality is the X-Men's
I should mention that i forgot the flash who is above Thor and maybe above the F4
And speaking of quantity
Even though that's why most of the other ones lack they make up for it in quality
Just look at their big 5 (in no order)
Sups (Doomsday, zod, lex, brainiac, and yes darkseid)
Thor (enchantress, Loki, malekith, surtur, and Hela) maybe the Midgard serpent or the destroyer armor can take one of their places
F4 (Galactus, annihilus, dr doom, super skrull/the skulls, and Rohan) and namor could take one of their spots
The flash (captain cold, zoom, gorilla grodd, reverse flash, and either captain boomerang or mirror master)
They all have great big 5s
A really fascinating character for sure.

In the 2000's Black Mask was given a major spotlight when he was turned into Catwoman's archnemesis during Ed Brubaker's seminal run on Catwoman that deconstructed and redefined Selina as a character as well as her relationships with Bruce, Batman, Holly, Maggie, Leslie Thompkins and others. In Brubaker's run artist Darwyn Cooke gave us her modern catsuit with the zipper, collar, goggles, and aviator style cowl. And this never went out of style.
Brubaker's tenure set him up to be the most twisted and dangerous Batman villain trying to one up the Joker between No Man's Land and War Games.
I've always been annoyed that adaptations always get his character wrong because since then we've had this from other media:
* The cartoon *The Batman* where he was just some comical mob boss who wore a black mask.
* *Batman: Under the Red Hood* where he was just some comical mob boss who wore a black mask.
* The Arkhamverse where he was just some comical mob boss who wore a black mask.
* The Birds of Prey movie where he was just some comical mob boss who wore a black mask.
* The Arrowverse where his daughter Circe us the Black Mask.
* The anime _Catwoman: Hunted_ where he was just some comical mob boss who wore a black mask.

I loved Black Mask in BoP. The False Face of Society was pretty cool within the film. Ewan play Sionis with class but very on the edge of losing his mind. Very short tempered and hitting his own men like what Black Mask would do. Too bad we would see this Black Mask with Ben's Batman..

Black Mask going from a C-Lister to ruling Gotham’s underworld was so cool and such a great idea. I mean he became so notorious that Lex Luthor offered him to join The Secret Society. Black Mask is the only other villain aside from The Joker to “kill” a Robin, since he is part of the reason Stephanie Brown became Spoiler

Someone in the DC Writing Department must have been a big Twilight Zone fan. The way Roman disfigures people is reminiscent of the classic episode 'Masks.' There was also a great homage in 1989's Batman with what Jack Nicholson's Joker did to his girlfriend.

Although I love Arkham Origins unlike others, I truly believe that they should have left joker out and kept black mask as the main dude. That way we could’ve had another Arkham game after Arkham Knight that takes place between Origins and Asylum where we meet joker
Honestly it made more sense for him to be the villain though joker has others do his dirty work the whole assassin thing is more black mask. Honestly i like seeing him go against red hood more than anyone else in the bat family it kinda fits because of their backgrounds and personalities.
