- Track 7 From The 1985 Concord Jazz
"Larry Coryell And Emily Remler Together" Album
Recorded At Cost Recorders, San Francisco, CA, August 1985.
Larry Coryell plays a Gibson Super 400 Electric (circa 1967) and an Ovation Adamas Acoustic Guitar.
Emily Remler plays a Boris Electric and an Ovation Adamas Acoustic Guitar. Both play Acoustic Guitars on Arubian Nights and Six Beats, Six Strings and Electric Guitars on all other selections.
"...There is a genuine bond between the two quite dissimilar guitarists. They share an empathy...and an instinctive understanding of this fragile format, and both are qualities that mark those jazz worth remembering."
Neil Tesser
USA Today/WBEZ Radio - Hudba
I went to school with Emily at Berklee 1974,,she left early to pursue her incredible career, I stayed and graduated in 1979,,,She will always be a legend and one of the greatest jazz guitarists ever!
I had a very funny encounter with Emily in 1977, long before I had any idea who she was or would become. I was at Flo's Records in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, and a guy, a fellow jazz freak I had never met was binging on "Bright Size Life" and how incredible Pat Methenty was and what a big jazz star he was destined to be. All of a sudden, this not unattractive but intense and self-possessed young woman sided up to us and started talking. We had been talking about what a hotbed of talent Boston and Berklee was becoming for guitarists, with Mick Goodrick and John Abercrombie and others tearing it up, and she said she had gone to Berklee and was a jazz guitar player herself and she knew Methany and he was "good"...and she started to feel frustrated that our attitude was oh...that's nice...you play jazz guitar...funny. If there was a guitar on hand I am sure she would have quickly put us in our mildly chauvinistic places. Strange how life is!
I was at the summer program at Berklee in 1973 and the rage was the still fairly new Spaces album by Coryell w John McLaughlin.
Donna Cutler great music, thanks Emily
Donna Cutler Did you know Pete Hennes? I went to Ga St Univ from 1982 - 1984 in Atlanta when he was chosen to start their jazz guitar program. He was amazed and impressed by her progress. Emily is the real deal!
So lucky. Great!
R.I.P Master Larry Coryel, now you can reunite with Emily and still playing fantastic music... Together again .
I shot the album cover. They came to my studio for the shoot. You could tell that they truly cared for each other, and it shows in both the music and the photo.
That’s really cool. Any other images you’d care to share?
Who supplied the horse?
I think they possibly had an affair together but have no problem with that...life is too short!
Yep, they were a couple. Maybe the most talented guitar duo/couple in history?
@@davidfischer196 I knew it the first time I saw the picture! And this is because of your great work capturing that energy. It was never publicized and all I knew is that Larry divorced from his wife the year after and that lightened a bulb in my head. Saw them play together in 85 and it was amazing...Larry confirmed directly to me in 92 the death of Emily and it was sad.
Emily took the octave style and really made it her own signature expression.Ive been thinking of Emily alot today.
Wow!, she has the Wes Montgomery sound down pat. Those opening phrases using
his octave style really sets this great guitar duet apart like no other.
Close your eyes and it's almost like hearing Wes there, but Emily is doing more unique improvisation in her solo that characterizes her signature sound.
Saw them together August 31 1985 at the Rising Sun in Montreal. I will never forget that night and was sitting pretty close at the first tables. Emily was stunning, dressed in green with leather boots .My friend recorded the show on his new Sony Walkman and I still have the recording. The sound was clean and right in your face with Fender twin reverb amps (Larry was also using the TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Pitch Modulator & Flanger pedal that you can clearly hear in this track) and the music was intense and exciting. I saw hundreds of concerts and this is in my top ten for sure. Had the opportunity to talk to Emily between the sets and she was nice. Larry did so many duets with other guitar players and my 2 favourites are the one with Philip Catherine and this one...a perfect balance between technique, emotion and feel...and lot of swing too. Larry once said that Emily's time feel was one of the best among the musicians he had played with and he played with hundreds of them. Every time I met Larry he was nice too and saw him on the street in 1992 at the Jazz fest (he witnessed the concert by Boulou & Elios Ferré) and asked him about the rumor that Emily was dead (no internet then) and he confirmed to me that she died from overdose and was sad to hear that. R.I.P. Emily and Larry, two masters of their art.
Thanks for the beautiful story and for the technical data as well, the recording you are talking about would be good to upload it to yotube to be able to listen to it, thanks
@@albordeestudios5966 Hello, you are right...I will upload this one day when I have time! The original recording was transfered to a reel to reel tape I think and I will have to find it first and transfer it in digital after. I know this recording is a sleeping treasure that is just waiting to be released for all (with new tunes that are not included in the studio recording like West Coast Blues)...Thanks.
@@danieldesjardins6615 The only live recording of them I have heard is the radio broadcast from Las Vegas.
@@pjjmsn Would have liked to hear it but..Good news...I have another one!
@@danieldesjardins6615 Awesome!
I just love this arrangement! I can't think of any two jazz guitarists who have played this song as a duet and pulled it off more beautifully than these two did. Also, keep in mind there will never be another lady, as bad ass as Emily Remler. RIP
there might , why not ? but for sure there'll never be another Emily
RIP Emily you had truly amazing talent gone too soon :(
Emily was a wonderful musician.....R.I.P. Sadly missed. Thanks for posting.
I can easily distinguish their individual guitar 'voices.' I took a 'B' for a term paper I wrote on Emily Remler in 1986. Both great guitarists!!!
I started at Berklee in the Fall of '74, and Emily was also in the dorm. I saw her years later in Sydney, which is where sadly, she died, RIP. §
Never was real crazy about Larrys playing , kinda liked Emily ... BUT together they're like a sack o DYN-O-MITE ! WOW ! This is truly great .
I can't even swallow my spit for the lump in my throat
RIP Larry..... A true legend!!
R.I.P. Larry. Your sound is great and will always stay.
I met Larry in Ft Laud. about 20 years ago introduced by a friend, Bobby Whitlock another legend Jazz Guitar player. I just found Emily in here sadly to late. I love her style and talent. She will be a favorite from now on.

Beautiful jazz. Heavenly.
Love this!
this is so other worldly, two beautiful souls as one
Great performance! Thanks for this great piece of music.
R.I.P GRACIAS POR TU ARTE, FUISTES MI PRIMERA INFLUENCIA EN LA GUITARRA. QUE DIOS TE TENGA EN SU GLORIA. GRACIAS POR ENTREGAR TU CORAZON EN CADA CANCION.
This made me cry. What GREAT heart felt guitar playing. I miss them both. Love Always Hu Ra Kalam
Masterful and beautifully improvised .
Wonderful!
. I wish I'd discovered Emily when she was alive. Larry Coryell, on the other hand was my neighbor in Connecticut so I knew of him in the 70's.
At Berkelee College of Music in 1973 a big deal was the at-that-time fairly new Spaces album with Coryell and McLauglin.
Coryell was one of the few 'jazz rockers' who actually could rock, as well as a great jazz player
I told a very drunk Coryell at the Cafe Augogo in NYC in 1972 that he and Jimi Hendix were the two most exciting electric guitarists in history, to which he said...dig it!
This is a brillant music , thank you for sharing.

Thanks Carvet For Sharing.
Greetings From Rio de Janeiro!!!
I heard many versions of "How Insensitive" from different artists, when I first heard of Emily and Larry's version, I was deeply impressed by two guitarists complimented each others work, not just that, Emily's playing expressed the most sadness and frustration of the meaning of this tune . This tune is included in my top 50 must heard Jazz tunes and I don't get tired of hearing it over and over again. Now they both are gone, leaving this tune to be a timeless piece of art work - 8 minutes long.
Beautiful.
Beautiful playing
what a great song. so many young guitarist/musicians should listen to this bc it aint about how many notes you play or how fast u play them. its all about heart and soul kids
After watching one her instructional videos I wrote a song for her entitled “Emily’s Prayer “ and recorded it on a CD called “So in other word…”
Paul deTimofeev and Co. if you get a chance check it out and see if I caught her magic. Like so many other players I too was influenced by her. May she rest in peace even though she was taken way too soon
bellissima interpretazione!
The first notes make me feeling deeply sad, knowing that they are both dead...
semplicemente straordinariiiiiiiiiiii........
Thank You!!!

Most ES 330's have P 90 pick ups. Did Emily's brother switch pick ups on the one Emily played?
5:04 The writing on the wall...
this work can pick up where it left off and go on 4Ever
Does anyone know who the supplier was?
@Aleksi32 Thanks Friend For Watching My Video.

روعة العنوان والاداء شئ مؤثر
Oh man she could play .
3:37 gets super deep
Sad to think of the music we missed because of her early and untimely death
Emily , 80's rock chick look , priceless
Tone.
How insensitive? Lmao! Total jazz.
Emily's death was indeed tragic and the fall into a dark political mindset with Coryell...near his death...was simply bizarre. Nonetheless, two great musicians...
Bizarre is your idea of a dark political mindset.
I dislike this video because I am insensitive
Mr. Brownstone, calling Mr. Brownstone. All this, "Oh she was taken from us too son BS." She a junkie, she didn't care about you.
She was still amazing
bellissima interpretazione!
