Thank you for your excellent information and advice. My mom opened an account at Banco Santander in Palma de Mallorca at a branch on Calle Joan Miro. I went with her to the branch to have my name placed on the account, apparently successful. But now (back in the USA) I'm trying to find out how to check our bank balance using the Banco Santander app. It appears I need a Spanish mobile phone and an NIE to register for online access and I have neither. I tried sending emails to the branch asking them to send me a "cuenta de movimientos" but no one responds. Probably went into the junk mail folder. We'll probably have to travel back to Palma to the branch and I'll also need an NIE at a minimum. Thanks again!

Greek banks were like that. You could only go to that branch but then they started closing branches permanently during covid so that could not work.

Santander bad bank. If your branch ever closes permanently it gets a bit crazy.

We don’t like the high monthly fees that keep rising. We will likely switch to N26. We will miss the lovely ladies who helped us so much though! It was so nice to practice Spanish with them.
