  • This recording is from Blues Trio's 35 years anniversary held in Nov. 2017 in Belgrade/Serbia.
The song "Room To Move" has influenced our harmonica player Petar Miladinovic "Pera Joe" ever since he started playing, back in the 70's.
We've always tried to honour John Mayall on our gigs and thank him for his great playing.
We've even met him and actually opened for his band's concert in Belgrade (1987).
There's a great story behind this very gig.
We bought our tickets to the show and were sitting at a friend's house that same afternoon. All of a sudden our harp player Pera Joe said "Hey, le's try to open for John Mayall tonight!"
It was only we and our third member at the time wasn't even at the flat then - we were supposed to meet prior to the show.
But how on Earth are we going to do this, I wondered.
Pera Joe said "We go to their hotell and we'll ask".
Ask... who? "We'll see when we get there" said Pera Joe.
To cut the story short, we somehow managed to time everything right.
From the moment Pera Joe got the idea and we got to the hotel, and the same moment we walked it the loby, we saw a gentleman with a pony tail walking slowly around there, it was.. John Mayall.
I mean, what were the odds??
We were prepared with a walkman and a cassette with our live gig recordings, and we simply approached him.
John was so down to Earth and kind. He agreed to listen to our idea and warned us that the soundcheck was finished, he didn’t know how it all could be arranged..
Still, he agreed to listen to the recordings.
Imagine Pera Joe and myself, standing there holding the walkman and the headphones on John’s head. It was surreal, specially for Pera Joe who was in awe for John and everything.
John took off the headphones for a moment and said “Maybe.. you could talk to our tour manager, check the room number at the reception. If it’s OK with them, fine with me”.
Then he listened for a little bit more, we fast forwarded a song or two - and all of a sudden he looked at us, took of the headphones and said ”Hm, but if you get to play… don’t do Room To Move, OK?”
Well of course, that’s his show-stopper, we wouldn’t dream of doing it anyway.
This all went great because the tour manager and the crew were great to us, they wanted to talk for a second and they asked us to wait in the lobby, and they said “Hey, no promises, we’ll see..”
Fifteen minutes later (longest 15 mins in our lives prior to that occasion), no one else but John Mayall is walking down the stairs and he says “OK guys, you’ve got 15 mins”.
We thanked him and realised that the troubles aren’t over, where’s our third member?
This was the time without smartphones right..?
But eventually we got him to hear these amazing news and plan for the meeting prior to the show.
He got in in the last minute.
We made it easy for the sound people, played only through microphones and our 15 minutes were also graced by John Mayall sitting in the back of the stage, he just sat on the drummer’s chair and listened. I couldn’t say he was there all the time, but when I turned my head once, he was sitting and listening.
The whole evening was amazing, and after the big show we got to join the band backstage, you know - food drinks, relaxing.. And we got to be presented to Walter Trout, Coco Montoya and the rest of the crew. Each and one of them were kind and welcoming, we’ll never forget it.
So here’s to John Mayall and, from me, to my life time friend and music collaborator Pera Joe.
Without him and his urge, energy and cockiness, we’d never gotten that gig, we’d never record anything or release a record, ‘cause I was always so critical and such a fool perfectionist.
Listen to Pera Joe’s playing here, it’s 40+ years of playing, it’s this song we played on each and every gig during our career since 1983, he’s amazing. He’s paying his dues to John Mayall, throwing in own melodies and thrills, we’re celebrating 35 years of our band, happy days.
If I’d only sung a bit better.. but yup, that’s me… read above.
    Cheers whoever came this far.
