- An etude for Trumpet and Lump Hammer that explores a corner of improvisation that challenges the preparatory resources of the instrumentalist, thanks to an evolving instrument that itself is becoming less and less playable with each hammer blow.

As a trumpet player I'm litterally in pain watching this, but at the same time it's kinda fun...
As funny and theatrical as this is, my main takeaway was the fascinating indeterminacy. You never can know just what the timbre will be after the next hammer blow, but the melody remains recognizable throughout, even as the instrument literally falls apart.

My band teacher showed us this video in class yesterday & I felt so many emotions all at once. It was funny, shocking, cool, and my middle-class self couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that someone would destroy an expensive instrument in purpose. I was so overwhelmed I almost cried 😂
Hopefully it was a cheap Chinese student model.

Good intonation on trumpet at Section A, but deteriorating quickly. Excellent performance throughout by percussion, but progressively let down by trumpet section who sound increasingly unwell.
Damn I wish some of the local orchestra trumpetiers would play this piece
As a composer this is very intereseting! As an instrumentalist this is a mix of interesting (as a challenge of playing gradually with less and less resources and having to be creative with it) and sad because of the trumpet.
As a "composer" that you are, you should be ashamed of how "modern classical" music composition has turned out to be in our days.

It’s more than that though…. Performance art… how much of a musical performance is the instrument, how much is the player? Obviously this was a cheap $99 trumpet that sacrificed its life for the demonstration… no way one would ever dare do this with a $4-5k Bach Stradivarius. I hope…

What are you talking about? It was practically flaweless technically and the piece is really freaking hard, good luck playing that with a broken trumpet...
All these people saying shit like "this is disgusting" or "what a waste" need to calm their tits and/or balls. If you can't appreciate a piece that was dedicated to someone else and purposefully and thoughtfully made, then grow up, go to some more masterclasses, and get out more.

It is a lost opportunity in this composition not to vary the hammer blows other than by location on the trumpet.
