    Cool game. I was expecting Gresefang to perform badly, but actually became a surprise! Cool!

    Greasefang is like low-key one of my favorite cards of the set. It's a janky strategy, but when you pull it off like it mostly works here, it's surprisingly strong. Some discard outlets, self mill, etc. will give you vehicle fodder in your GY, and Greasefang herself is strong enough to crew most good vehicles. I like it for being an Orzhov commander that isn't heavily pushing an aristocrats strategy.

    This is the first video I've seen from y'all, and I really liked it! I usually hate watching MTG on paper, but your smooth editing and narration made all the difference. The game was great, too! It felt like each player, maybe minus Hinata a bit, got to do what their deck wanted to.

    Awesome game, loved to see how Greasefang performed!
    As a sidenote, I think Jeweled Lotus is a very weird inclusion for a 3-colors commander. The strenght of that card is to ramp out the commander early and here it only pays for half of Hinata's cost and wastes 1 mana.

    • @NewtDungeons
      @NewtDungeons Před 2 lety +7

      I believe it was included because it was built as an eggs deck. It's not the most efficient use of it but it's another target for something like Indomitable Creativity. And sometimes that third mana gets used to pay part of commander tax.

    • @NewtDungeons
      @NewtDungeons Před 2 lety +1

      That recent rule change was specifically for Duel Commander which is a 1v1 commander variant format with a different rules committee. So, those rules wouldn't apply here and partner commanders still operate the same.

    Be careful with extra combat cards in Isshin. Cards like Aurelia may give you two additional combat steps with Isshin on board, but she only untaps your creatures once (since both untap triggers happen during the 1st combat phase).

    • @NewtDungeons
      @NewtDungeons Před 2 lety +1

      It is an eggs deck so it serves as another target for Indomitable Creativity, Paradoxical Outcome, etc. It's not the most efficient use of Jeweled Lotus but it makes sense to me. And it can always put another mana towards commander tax in the right situation.

    • @Teeto_K
      @Teeto_K Před 2 lety +1

      (Sadly?) Isshin's ability only doubles the triggers of permanents you control.
      The part he doesn't care about is "whose creature is attacking", but, he *does* care "who controls the triggering permanent", which in this case, was cody, not Matt. Happy combat steps to ya out there! :3

    Paradoxical outcome does not target, and Deflecting Swat could not choose Hinata. This has to do with two things: how a spell is cast and how Paradoxical Outcome resolves. It also means Hinata will not reduce the cost.
    The cards are chosen during resolution as the spell is resolving, and no targets are chosen as that happens when the spell is being cast but before priority is checked. Paradoxical Outcome reads: "Return any number of target nonland, nontoken permanents you control to their owners' hands. Draw a card for each card returned to your hand this way." The spell Turnabout works the same way.
    At no point does the spell target, meaning Deflecting Swat could not be played because it had no targets and Hinata could not reduce the cost.

    • @ryanprov
      @ryanprov Před 2 lety +5

      With Turnabout you are clearly targeting the player and choosing the permanent type, but Paradoxical Outcome targets the permanents directly (it uses the word "target" not "choose"). So I think it does work. Put it this way, could you bounce a creature you control that had shroud with Outcome? I would say no but you can untap it with Turnabout.
      Would you say Aurelia's Fury isn't discounted by Hinata and can't be deflected? Obviously that one works and it's phrased the same way as Paradoxical Outcome as far as I can tell.

    • @katiekreature
      @katiekreature Před 2 lety +4

      If you read the card, it explains what the card does. What is the 5th word on this card?

    • @SiusBleach
      @SiusBleach Před 2 lety +8

      Hi, this is Jason with Smooth Brain EDH and a L1 judge. We appreciate you looking out for mistakes in the video, but in this situation the guys played it correctly. Cards that say target in the text box do target. There's no exceptions to this other than "enchant X" which still targets even though it doesn't explicitly state it. Turnabout works differently from Paradoxical Outcome because it has a single target, which is a player. Since Paradoxical Outcome and Turnabout target, Deflecting Swat can change the targets.
      The "any number of target permanents" part of Paradoxical Outcome is the type of interaction Ethan and I looked for when building the Hinata deck. Mistakes in deckbuilding and understanding of the rules do occur. Even I as the L1 of the group make mistakes about interactions, so we appreciate the vigilance. However in this instance, Ethan and Matt are correct in how they handled this interaction even down to Matt subtly paying the 1 to target Paradoxical Outcome due to Hinata's tax.
