  • This video explores the basics of Uruguayan history and politics to explain how it is that Uruguay overcame a history of civil war and conflict to become one of the better run and richest countries in Latin America. It begins with Artigas revolt against the Spanish in alliance with Buenos Aires, how he turned against them and ended up in exile. How Uruguay was born as a buffer state between Brazil and Argentina and what led to the creation of blancos and colorados. It then covers the transformative power of Battle y Ordoñez, the coup in 1973 and its return to democracy in 1985. It ends with Pepe Mujica and Luis Lacalle Pou.

Thank you for making this. My father lived in Uruguayan in the 1960’s. We grew up listening to stories of Uruguay. I’ll use this in my AP World History class.

This is a very VERY good video! The only things I'd change is first a mention of Positivist educator José Pedro Varela in during the 1870s militarist period who made public education: free, irreligious and compulsory. Also the main problem with the Broad Front main problem was the inability to handle the rampant spike in crime since the year 2000, not the stagnant economy since 2015. Other than that, this video is TOP NOTCH. One of the best if not the best I've seen.

Y ahora con la derecha al mando de luis lacalle pou, no tenemos agua potable en el país, y renuncia o es despedido un ministro al mes por casos de corrupción! Errores tienen todos! Nadie nace siendo presidente. Pero ahora estamos peor que antes.

This video provides details on events that are not necessarily well informed.
Thank you for your time, work and share 👍
Can I put it in a link in a voluntary work on the history of the revolutions in France and in the world since 1789?

If the military had refused to recognize the results of the 1980 plebiscite, we would have a different constitution, so that did not happen. Also, by September 1972, the tupamaros were completely defeated, so under no scenario was the 1973 coup intended to "restore order".

Freem@sons came and established a party the later formed into a version of Eurocentric political ideals and these same virtues of power being easily output to the citizens of the world through all governments but the spirit of independence will always live in the people no matter how hard they try

I think it was a CIA agent and not FBI. The CIA agent was an torture expert that had traveled around in Latin America and was taken for exchange for political prisoners but the US denied all involvement and they shot him. Or maybe i am mixing up 2 different stories..?

you're right. he was CIA, although looking back on it, he didn't seem to have any particular official title. Not surprisingly.

Dan Mitrione was a CIA agent teaching the military and government through South America how to extract information from political prisoners.
You can imagen what the tactics he was teaching were.

BadEmpanada claimed in his Argentina was Never Rich video that Uruguay was ruled by “orthodox liberals and conservatives throughout most of the 20th century”. Sounds like that was a lie. They sound way more Peronist than he wants to admit.

    • @RodrrdoR
      @RodrrdoR Před měsícem

      Never trust Bad Empanada.
But never call an Uruguayan peronist either.
The president Battle Berres while quite fond of improving social rights and welfare programs he was extremely anti-peronist.
He even compared Perón with Hitler and let the pilots who drooped bombs in Plaza de Mayo against Perón take refuge in Uruguay.
The "allies" of Perón in Uruguay were actually pretty right wing and conservative and also economically orthodox. Luis Alberto de Herrera leader of the blancos through the latter part of the first batllismo until neobatllismo had the support of Perón.
