dilla did this with half the technology
smh that man wasnt human lol
You think this is crazy listen to Don't Cry. He chopped up that beat by ear he legit was not from this planet lol
Foreal
Shawn Wavy man i agree! !!!
Shawn Wavy The Greatest Ever!!!
That's probably the best sample flip of all time
This beat changed hip hop
+Kompayaa It's been sample or covered over 25 times and IMO exposed the masses to J Dilla. J Dilla, arguably one of hip hop's most influential music makers paved the way for conscious rap and r&b. There's not a modern hip hop producer whose work wasn't influenced by Dilla (he's like the James Brown of hip hop) and this song helped solidify the foundation of deep crate digging for samples.
IMHO
Runnin' introduced me to J DIlla. The lyrics and the beat fit so well with each other. This kind of showed me how far some producers search to sample things, which is really great, because it allows for these sick beats to be made.
This song was actually played a lot on the radio in chicago (1995), so for that reason alone I feel like lots of people heard this song who were alive back then. But nobody really realized the importance of producers back then (IMO) I feel like pharcyde took all the credit for the beat (not intentionally, just by default because most hiphop fans didnt recognize the importance of producers). Later on, with slum village, there was internet articles describing Jay Dee as "the producer everyone's heard but that nobody actually knows about."
So, many people went on living without really knowing about Jay Dee, until the 2000s with Slum Village (and even this, Jay Dee started to become a little famous only until the second album).
And in between all this, Dilla didn't get the recognition for most of his stuff like tribe called quest beats he did, etc.
I agree though, I was 10 years old when Runnin came out, and I fell in love w this beat, man (especially the saxaphone part).
@@ShonTolliverMusic By conscious you mean "Neo-Soul"
I’d say tribe called quest (or q-tip) changed hip hop
But but how tf is he soo accurate with all his remakes like bruh said 3 quarters of a semitone and smiled cuz he know no other producer can find that shit💀💀
J Dilla made things sound so good and fluid with so much complexity. One of the best to ever do it.
agreed
RIP Dilla. Today would've been his 42nd birthday...
46 today
@@LOUCABRASI 48 today
Hey Sandurz,
To answer your question of where the bassline came from and to help educate other music enthusiasts and producers :),
It came from the guitar sample. He used time stretch in his mpc to time stretch the 2nd bars bassline of the main 2 bar guitar loop (aka he time stretched one bar to fit into two bars) He then put a low pass filter on it to cut out the guitar and extract the bass.
So whenever you hear that bass come in, it's from that main guitar riff sample. It''s just filtered/ mixed/ and edited in such a way that it sounds foreign to think that it could have came from that same sample. And that my friends is the genius of Dilla
There is no time stretching on the MPC3000 though
@@typtyp4486 3000 came out in 1994 so it could be mpc60 or sp1200
I wonder what was the bass line sample when a rapper says "It's 1995..." in a middle of the song.
I helped him find it!
@@typtyp4486 probably on the 2000 XL?
Thank you man you've really inspired me to start producing
+MrBasketballMD you're welcome dr basketballs
man j dilla was a mad scientist with his production
The production on this song holds up today
They reminisce over you (T.R.O.Y.) by C.L. Smooth and Pete Rock Prod. Pete Rock
Fuck yeeeeeeeeeesssssss
I just love how the drums on their own sound all over the place up to the point that one might call it "wrong" and when the sample and bass come in.... it's just perfect.
I still cannot fathom the skills and brainpower that dilla had.
SANDURZ... WHERE U BEEN DUDE? U FELL OFF THE MAP!!
this is one of my all time fav beats. If I didn't knew it was a breakdown of the beat, this is exactly how I remember the track. maybe a little longer decay and sustain on the bassline
Dilla recorded a lot of stuff live, even things he could have sampled cleanly-I wouldn't be surprised if the bass is played live.
it' s not
This beat is legendary
sometimes when you remake the beats for these videos they sound a little of and not right but this one sounds flawless dude
*off
JoeMckeown there's SO MANY factors it would be nearly impossible to get it exactly the same
Give us some OutKast Sandurz
outkast doesn't use very much sampling. A few tracks off atliens are sample based but a lot of their stuff is all instrumentation over programmed drums
YESSSS! ELEVATORS!!! The People have spoken!
Shit, Ha!
This is the real Sandurz, his evil trisexual twin gets released from the attic on Wednesdays to do beat critiques
Matt Morris L for even attempting to give me an L.
Matt Morris..... I have work in the morning
Matt Morris nah keep the L tonight and try to give it to me tomorrow
Matt Morris nah I don't have any space for it at my house, just toss it in your personal pile of L's
Matt Morris nah I rented a studio apartment last month.... Just keep the L bruh early Christmas gift
THE Greatest beat(IMO and Favorite) of all time. Rest In Peace J Dilla.
dilla played the bassline himself
John The Third Nope. It’s the guitar riff time stretched and low passed.
JPEG prod. No, it’s from the guitar part with a low pass filter
@@drakefeet2_ ian't this snake dead?
Absolutely LOVE this song and so glad you did a breakdown of this. Props!
I love these Beat Breakdowns, only thing I watch now. Great Work!
He was so ahead of space + time itself... J Dilla, R.I.P.
This guy needs to come back!!! This is sucks a badass series!!
one of your best man. so sick
agreed
Dilla is my GOAT producer and to give you Sandurz credit, this is one of the closest remakes of this crazy beat!
one of my favorite songs. nice job
Favorite Beat of all time
dilla did the bassline himself.
Brian Yoshida Nope. It’s the guitar riff time stretched and low passed.
It's 2021 and I am still patiently awaiting the return of Sandurz
Thanks I love this. One of my favorites
Dilla might be the best hip hop producer of all time. He was so talented... as evidenced by you being unable to find the other bassline.
You did a good job recreating the beat tho.
saw the title...subscribed instantly
you need more subs fam
The new bass line his talking about , I think it came from his Moog synthesizer
love these videos
he's an incredible genius especially for what he has done with the linited stuff he had...
best beat show on the web, thanks for all the videos...
+NEVU much appreciated
another great episode, durz
+FittedHeat thanks ted
nice. been hearing this track again lately and this fits perfectly, thanks! i suggest De La Soul - Sunshine or Pass the Ps
Great Breakdown!!!
Classic beat
Holy shit. Yesssssssssss
i think i figured out what happened to this guy.
he got a taste of dilla then died, he could not handle it.
If u look up what happened to him there’s a reddit thread where he replies saying that he feels burnt out and wants to work on his own stuff
Great Work!!!!!
I have summed up my 2 best beats of all time to be:
1. Can't Keep Running Away (J Dilla w Pharcyde)
2. Latin Lingo (DJ Muggs w Cypress Hill)
J Dilla & DJ Muggs to me are some of the best producers of all time!
I'd love to see a breakdown of "Latin Lingo baby, funky bilingual!"
Thanks for this. This was great!
PLEASE do Momma by Kendrick Lamar! I'm so curious about that composition
Man, the fact that all of us beat heads are like dying to figure out that bassline sample, is all you need to know about the greatness of Jay Dee. Was just listening to the Pharcyde record, that bass sample on the 3rd verse sounds like he's heavily side chaining (as it sounds like the bass is dipping up and down like a roller coaster). My only theory is that Dilla played that bass part live on his Moog, side chained that with the kick, etc.
This flip is siiiick
broo where are you now? this series was impresssssive
Awesome mang!
This guy, is almost the Ariel Helwani of hip hop! so freakin' awesome!!!!
Still an amazing video and insight into the mind of a true Hip Hop producer
Flying Lotus - All In pls
Awesome, more Dilla please !
Jilla knew how to do samba.
The jungle noise is the "Cuica".
PLEASE DO HOOD POLITICS
Rustled Jimmies Y E S !
I want more Dilla beats!
Just the guitar and bass line is smooth as ColdStone ice cream 😂
Woooww.. Thanks a lot for this
Good pick man
Great vid, Sandurz! How about "Alicia Keys - You Don't Know My Name prod. Kanye West"?
Kanye produced that? I didn't even know
+Soloryo PLEASE!!!
+Soloryo but that's so easy. just the sample by itself
@@Patritz I didn't even know that was a sample. I thought that was Kanye playing keys IRL.
Dam I miss this series
Broooo I literally just started bumping Runnin and a ton of Pharcyde songs ALL DAY today. What are the chances, this is too perfect. #illuminaticonfirmed #sandurz #theconnection
We, the people, need the Pharcyde’s Drop deconstructed! Thanks again! #thepeople
Sandurz where you @ man I miss your Beat Breakdown videos
Omg yess
thanks!
What is the name of the intro beat, its really dope man, is it on your soundcloud? Great video aswell man, always nice to see these breakdowns, Dilla was really a genius!
would love to hear u tackle an El-P beat
dont stop what youre doing man, helps many people including me but can you please crooked smile by j cole
YESSSSS
passing me by the pharcyde sandurz
If you decide to start doing these again, please do "Don't Cry" by Dilla.
Great Vid! Enjoyed it. Did you ever find the bass origin?
What other producers make instrumentals like this? I love this sound
I have no idea how to make beats, but Sandurz so desperately wanting to find that bass makes me want to figure it out. He should reach out to the makers they would probably be happy to clue him in.
jdilla died in 06
he's a genius
this beat sounds like a hot summer morning
Yasss
Jdilla plays the bassline with either his synth or electric bass.
Rip j dilla
Please, Sandurz, do Give Up The Goods by Mobb Deep for Us! It's very dope beat!
If you ever come back, please breakdown 93' til infinity by Hieroglyphics.
I would be very much grateful if you could document the tracks used in the description list. thanks a lot in advance. It's really nice to discover the integral original samples :)
2:11 "That shaker with the weird jungle noises." You mean the Cuíca/'Monkey Drum.'
do a beat breakdown for piss on your grave by travis Scott
+Areeb Hassan sorry do you mean the song 'biscuits and gravy'
+Sandurz hahaha
+Areeb Hassan Unfortunately they brought in a guitarist live to play that beat its not sampled according to mike Dean.
+Jason Fevrier You know the truth bro, straight up resampled for rights. And his drums had crazy samples......never just 1 kick, snare and hi hat.
Man, if there is someone who might know what that sample is, that would be J-Rocc for sure!
You should drop one of those beatmaking tutorials for free for people to check it out, man!
Might be 1 of the greatest tracks ever produced. Dilla was dope
the jungle noise is actually an instrument used a lot in Brazilian music called a quica
+raniely candelario that's dope I never know what it was called
Yoooo try some more dilla tracks!
RIP dilla man RIP dilla
Felt weird without the record scratching
yoo sandurz Dilla always used the Moog analog synths for bass lines also.. I think he had one special made for him..
check out the crate diggers with Dilla video... they show a Moog or some type of keyboard he use to use... that's my guess.. keep up the good work.... Damogreen.. peace good friday
+Damien Rogers oh definitely! his Moog basses were always the sickest! this was back when he sampled all his basslines before he busted out the synths. Preciate it!
Now I really want a Maschine.
Awesome stuff man. Do you have project files that work with mpc touch?
Do kingdome come by Jay Z thats a very cool sample flip, ps this is a great channel!
Yo I found that bassline you were looking for Sandurz
Valued at 1.2 million? Damn son...
Question, how do you isolate the left channel in the sample? I had no idea you could do that.
