  • In this Video we take a look on the differences between the G-4 and the G-6 of the Bf 109 series.
    And I compare the stats of the G-6 against typical adversaries.

    Ah the G-6, my favorite of the 109 series. I spent countless hours in the famous 'White 9' when I played Aces High.
    This is almost enough to convince me to invest the small fortune required for IL-2 these days.

      The AH G6 was great, loved it too. Great handling. But you needed a good gang of fellow "pilots" around you and fly it very clever. Funny thing is, that was more or less exactly what the "real" pilots said in early 43 when they got the G6. Disapointed about speed, but thrilled about the better handling. ;)

    great vid. I concur whenever flying the G6 i'm always more reluctant to dive down from 3-5k to something on the deck as it doesn't really have a good quick exit strategy against it's contemporary opponents like the F4 does (G4 has the same problem) while with the FW 190 you can dive in with lots of speed but still have good nose authority to get guns on target, and then exit out with a lot of speed.

    yeah, according to Don Caldwell's JG26 unit histories by the time of Normandy (and the subsequent army support air war) the G6 had become terribly un-competitive compared to the Allied fighters of late 1943 to late 1944--the Spit9, P47 and P51.

    Can you fit the underwing gondolas with a 3cm MK108 in each? On the western front,for a time, this version of the G6 was a very effective bomber killer. The American bomber crews called it The Jack Hammer

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 2 měsíci

      I doubt that the general bomber crew knew about specific sub versions of any plane. You had to be lucky that they could tell apart a Fw 190 from a 109.
      We dont have 30mm gunpods in the game at all. The Fw 190 A-8 can be eqipped with two 30mm guns tho.

    So essentially the G-6 in the critical year of 1943 put the German pilots at a disadvantage performance wise against the best allied types, and by the time G-14s, G-6AS, K-4s arrived it was too late as the situation was just too overwhelming and the average pilot skills too diminished.

    I never played IL-2, so I'm wondering: Are there any limitations to what plane you can fly online? As far as I know, you don't need to grind and unlock stuff like in Warthunder, but I imagine if you can just chose what you want to fly, everyone would always chose the most powerful plane for the faction. With other words, why would anyone fly a G-6, if you could also chose a G-14 or a K-4?

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 4 lety

      the planes are usually only available in historical context (to some extent)+
      But server admins can decide which planes they allow. But usually a specfic timeframe is kept in mind.

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC Před 4 lety

      @@SheriffsSimShack I see. Thanks for the explanation. Since the late Bf 109 models followed each other in relatively close succession and often were used alongside each other, it often will be hard to historically justify allowing one, but not the others, won't it?
      What I mean is that the time window within which the G-6 was the "best" 109 was relatively small.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 4 lety

      @@TrangleC the G-6 we have is an early one. and makes sense in mid 43. We have only planes from the eastern front of that timeframe. The G-14 followed in 44, so there is quite some time in between. K-4 was introduced at the end of 44, which makes them appear at OP Bodenplatte but not at Normandy or Market Garden to name examples.

      May I use the opportunity to ask you another question regarding the game:
      I'm just about to get into flight sims. I played Warthunder for a while years ago, but I'm more interested in something more realistic and immersive now, so I want to get started with IL-2 and DCS.
      I got a decent mid-range joystick, but don't have a Track-IR yet and my monitor is relatively old and small. If I really want to enjoy flight sims and see some success, I will probably be forced to buy a better monitor and of course a Track-IR.
      Since the Track-IR alone costs 200 Euros and I need a monitor too, that will cost me enough to where I could also afford a good VR set instead.
      Would you say that in such a situation, it might make sense to just skip the Track-IR stage and go to VR instead? I heard that both IL-2 and DCS are VR compatible, but I can't judge or estimate how playable they are in VR.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  Před 4 lety +1

      @@TrangleC I cant hardly give any accurate advice here since it all depends what you really want from your game. First you dont have to buy TIR to have a good headtracking. THere is the delan clip and track hat which have the same functionalities as TIR but are cheaper. VR is surely a thing to keep an eye on but you need to have beefy hardware.
