I bought my wife (5'2, 100 lbs) a .38 Smith & Wesson hammerless revolver she wanted a couple years ago for concealed carry. The gun shop commando behind the counter tried getting my wife to buy a full sized 1911 .45.......Great video.

I would have rathered a full size weapon over a tiny .38. I now have an xd compact 45 and feel less of the recoil than the .38 regarding that I have fired in the past just because I can grip it better.

+Shane's World a full size 1911 is easy to handle because of the size and weight. my 130lb 5 5 fiancee loves shooting it. however its obviously to big for her to carry. but the gun shop was trying to upsell you on a more expensive gun

+Rudy Eckert Exactly. I've had guns in my hand since I was 4 years old, I've been in the military, I've trained with just about every firearm that I could
get my hands on ...I've been in combat, whatever, not bragging, just
very familiar with guns as is just about EVERYONE, not a big deal, but
my point is ...My business had a really good week and I had about $2K or
3K to blow on some toys, certainly didn't NEED anything, but I did want
to spend some money, I'm not a cop or a Navy SEAL and I don't need or
use guns as part of my job, the most I use certain guns for is home
defense, and I was mostly looking for another gun to add to my
collection, everything looked great, I didn't know if I wanted to blow
$3K or just spend $300, didn't know if I wanted a pink gun for my wife
or a custom AR for myself, a .380 or a .338 Lapua, and a couple salesmen
kept pulling conversation from me, I didn't even WANT to talk but I
didn't want to be rude either, to me some of the salesmen looked like
kids with their 1st real job, some even right out of the military -
anyway, to make a short story long, I was told that I needed to do some
research before coming to buy a gun, then he started questioning me
about my military service but not like he was interested, more like he
wanted to "catch" me in a lie, that stolen valor shit is really going to
everyone's head lately, etc... YOUR JOB IS TO SELL ME WHATEVER I WANT,
IT'S MY MONEY AND YOU ARE AN EMPLOYEE! If I want to buy 5 pink guns and
wear them across my neck like a necklace, that's what I'll fucking do!
Just because someone WORKS behind a counter doesn't make them an expert,
and if they are an expert good for them WHO THE HELL CARES? It's not
exactly like being a doctor! It's not exactly HARD to become an expert
when it comes to firearms and optics. Everyone needs to get off their
high horses, especially the tactically retarded that act like they are
God's gift to the tactical world, it's just guns not the meaning of life
itself ...when I want someone's opinion, I'll ask for it, and
generally, the only people worth listening to are the one's that aren't
so desperate to prove to everyone how much they know ...I can usually
tell instantly, the quiet ones, not trying to convince themselves by
convincing others, they don't just give their experience away like
verbal vomit - they wait for someone to respectfully ask them for advice
before just giving it up as if it had no value ...There really shouldn't be any issue at all! It doesn't matter who knows more about what, I'm there to buy a gun, and they are there to sell me a gun! If there is ever a problem, it can ONLY be coming from BEHIND the counter!

Many of these "gun shop commandos" are the ones who always insist that a .45 is automatically better than a 9 mm, when this is not the case. The .45 has relative advantages over the 9 mm and the 9 mm has relative advantages over the .45. Regardless, nobody would want to be hit by either a .45 or a 9 mm.

Funny that I stumble across this video after dealing with that "know it all" on the left. I walked in the store recently knowing exactly what I wanted to buy. I've bought from Moss 2 previous times, both with Barry, and the transactions went great. So I walked around and found the firearm I wanted "used". A S&W 40. I asked to see it and was responded with a condescending "Why do you wanna see that?" I responded with "I want a 40cal to keep beside my bed." The condescending yet again response I was given was "40cal has no more stopping power than a 9mm". He then proceeds to try and sell me on a 9mm from a manufacture I wasn't familiar with at a price out of my established range. I looked around for other options being that he was pushing me away from what I was originally seeking. Keep in mind the firearm I wanted is a well established firearm for self defense. Great reviews across the board.
So, after looking around I tell him that I wanted to purchase the used S&W. I asked him if the price was set in stone and he replied "well, with tax of course". The msrp in every gun store was 20% below their used price. Academy had it for almost 25% below their used price and after showing him this, he responded with some bullshit response of how they purchase guns and blah blah blah and Academy can do this and blah blah blah. I've never had a business push a customer with cash in hand right out the door.
I walked to the other side of the shop to see if I could find anything to make my trip worthwhile and while checking my voicemail, another employee told me "no phones in the store". At that point I knew it was time to leave. I called Academy, drove several miles down 75 and bought my firearm brand new for almost 25% below Moss's used asking price for a firearm with significant use.
Never again will I deal with this pompous ass if I ever decide to step foot back into the store. Do your research and shopping around locally before you make your purchase at Moss because you might overpay significantly.

I agree 100% on training and practicing with a self-defense weapon. I had a friend and neighbor back in the 80's who went to the range with me one day. He told me he bought a snub-nose 38 for protection, and it had been in a bed side table draw ever since. I asked if he had practiced any with it, he said no it's brand new. I told him to bring it next time and he did. He loaded it, took aim and nothing happened, he pulled the trigger over and over. I checked the pistol and the firing pin was broken. He had this in a drawer as a self defense weapon for 3 years.I shudder to think what would have happened if they had a home invasion during that time.

Also fun story. I was talking with a Sheriffs deputy and asked this person what they carry as a sidearm (on this deputy's hip was a Glock 21 Gen 4) and they said, "I don't know, a 9mm of some sort I believe". I am a woman & I hate to say this but lots of women are fickle about buying a gun.
I have been shooting for 30+ years & I collect, mostly rifles but I have several handguns too. Anyways, I know most of the local dealers & we will chat for a while every time I go in. On several occasions I have been chatting with someone & another female customer will ask me what I think about something, just out of the blue. It's like they see me talking with the owner or a sales guy & assume I know what I am talking about & they want my input. That has happened several times.
I have taught many women how to shoot so I do know some about it but they don't know that when they ask my opinion.
One time a woman was there with her husband. They were looking at small 9mm carry guns. She asked my opinion & I asked what they wanted it for (home defense & target/fun) so I suggested a full sized handgun & explained the equal & opposite reaction thing & that a full sized gun is easier to handle & more fun to shoot if you don't need to CC it. Long story short, I ended up hijacking the sales guy's customer.(not intentionally, she just started ignoring him) The shop owner was watching & he kept smiling at me. He thought it was hilarious. Anyways, she ended up buying a used Inox Beretta, ear protection, cleaning equipment, ammo & everything to get started.
After they paid & walked out we all started laughing & the shop owner handed me 2 boxes of 9mm & said it was my commission.
It's odd how some people decide who they trust & will take advice from. For some people it's the shop staff, for some it's their "cop buddy", for her, i think she was simply more comfortable talking to another woman. Just a funny story. :)

I was in the middle of waiting for my background check for my Glock 23C that I just purchased and I asked the salesman that sold it to me if he had any .40 S&W. Since I JUST purchased a Glock 23, what do you think the assumption would be for that question? Am I asking for ammo or for another .40 S&W handgun? He put a smirk on his face and said do you mean .40 S&W ammo? If the serial number wasn't already attached to my name per the background check, I would have walked away. I just bought a handgun of the .40 S&W caliber and I told him earlier that it was my first of the caliber. How is he going to turn around and act like an ass when I just bought a $600 handgun from him?

It turned out to be an exercise in fitting the weapon to her. Her hands were so small that the only available handgun for her was a Charter arms .44 snub. It became noticeable when she tried to fire my DWA .357. She kept it under her pillow the entire time we were married. And I made her fire a hundred rounds at a range with it before I was comfortable with it. And I'm enjoying your videos. Useful information.

I was not riding the slide. I then took it back to my trusty gun shop and they in turn sent the magazines back to Beretta. If I would have relied on the gun for self defence before getting to train with it I probably would have been in a very hairy situation.

For a first handgun, I would recommend a .357 Mag. You can start out practicing with .38 Spl 148 gr. wadcutters, which don't kick much more than a .22. Then, you move on to .the .38 standard velocity, then +P rounds, and finally, full charge .357s. Everything fom target shooting, to defense & medium game......how can you ask for more?

    • @jennoscura2381
      @jennoscura2381 Před 8 lety +3

+Clyde Wary I am a fan of a 22 as a first gun. A 22 rifle is a good thing for anyone to have anyway. But as a first gun it gives you something easy to handle. The ammo is cheaper which allows you practice more. Once you are more educated on guns you can go from there. For a first handgun it really depends on what they want it for. If it's for defensive use; go with whatever you can handle that still packs a punch. The downside to a 357 revolver is that they are beefier than a 38 special. For some people a lighter gun might be in order.

There's also the flip side to it. I walked into my LGS, been going there for a while. I walked in and wanted a specific pistol. A new guy, as I was speaking what I wanted and why, opened the case and plopped down two pistols that I didn't want, and said, "You want one of these." No, I wanted what I wanted. Shop owner walked up, told me he didn't have what I wanted in stock, but was happy to get it in. I now have it in my possession. My gripe? Gun shop snobs telling me what I REALLY wanted even though I knew what I wanted.

Take the black powder pill. Buy a Sharps carbine and two 1858 army remingtons.

@@pinkhead6857890 Yep I've considered doing just that but it's not all that easy here in Illinois, but I am getting a hi- power PCP for home defense thanks for the reply and someday I will get just what you recommend in Illinois black powder has to go through an FFL and correct me if I'm wrong, but the FFL would require me to have a FY card ti pick it up

@@smokingunclefrank6037I don’t know about your state but almost everywhere you can buy a black powder rifle/pistol online and have it shipped to your doorstep no background check required. They even make 6 shot, single action black powder revolvers that aren’t considered firearms

Lots of excellent advice in this video. I've had issue with two brand new guns in the last year, one was a Taurus and the other was a Smith & Wesson.
