Aided by his sadistic accomplice John Stearne (Robert Russell), he travels from town to town and wrenches confessions from "witches" in order to line his pockets.

    He was vrtually resident over here in the 60s and early 70s, and occasionally went out on the town with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Imagine meeting those three in a dark London Alley! Seriously all three were charming and erudite gentlemen.

      I believe Vincent lived here in england for several years also not only were Peter, Christopher and Vincent the three greatest actors ever to appear in a horror film ever but they were some of the greatest actors of all time and of course three gentlemen especially Peter Cushing

    The original title for this film was taken from a quote from a Poe poem, The Conqueror Worm. Most people are unaware of this great Vincent Price film.

    • @VeraRabbit
      @VeraRabbit Před 9 lety +6

      No that's just the US title to keep up with the Poe series. The original UK version doesn't have the poem inserted but the US version does.

    • @richwicz
      @richwicz Před 9 lety +5

      Gregory A. Fournier Actually, the original title (the director's preferred title) of the film is 'Mathew Hopkins - Witchfinder General'. The title has been shortened over time to 'Witchfinder General'. 'The Conqueror Worm' was the rather stupid American title for the film. It was stupid because the film had nothing to do with Roger Corman's 'Edgar Allan Poe' series of films for AIP, or Poe's poem of the same name.

      @davidrayner182 Před 4 lety +3

      @@richwicz The title on the actual film when it was originally released in Great Britain in May, 1968, was 'Mathew Hopkins Witchfinder General'. However, all the publicity at the time, posters, stills and the trailer and even a 45 rpm single of the love theme had the title shortened to 'Witchfinder General' I was 21 at the time and went to see it as a new release to see what all the fuss was about.

  • @russellbrown7028

    Vincent Price himself once rated this film as one of his most frightening. Unlike some of his more flamboyant performances (like in "Theatre of Blood"), he played the witchfinder role dead straight, and its a disturbing film. A lot of care to obtain authenticity was obvious in the location shooting, and it must have been a fairly expensive movie to make.
    Highly recommended.

    • @camo7886
      @camo7886 Před 9 lety +1

      Right on. It's extremely violent and paints a pretty bleak picture of humanity. Much more affecting than more traditional 'spooky' horror.

    • @russellbrown7028

      ***** Donald Pleasance would also have made a good job of the part , I believe. He always played excellent villains. Did quite a creepy Blofeld in "You only Live Twice", among many other baddie roles.

    • @russellbrown7028
      @russellbrown7028 Před 9 lety +1

      ***** The depiction of Hopkins as an opportunistic gangster with a government licence to persecute and pillage is accurate. I believe that what makes it such a frightening film is that, to this day, there is no shortage of individuals who would behave in much the same manner in similar circumstances. I liked the Cromwell portrayal in the film too, complete with facial warts.Oliver Cromwell was no stranger to mayhem and genocide, and along with two or three of his cronies, received the post-mortem distinction of being dug up and gibbetted.
