- Nothing like this exists in the world. A park replicating Disneyland so much only to be left abandoned and now known for legitimately how creepy it is. This is Nara Dreamland.

July 5th, 2019: Still gone.
July 10th 2019 UPDATE: It popped back up in my neighborhood, destroying dozens of subdivisions, a school, and a church. Please send help.
The biggest mistake NaraDreamland made was to keep the park as it was after catching wind of the arrival of Disney Tokyo. The moment this shit was confirmed, the instant they found out this going to happen and there was no going back, that was the moment for them to get their designers and engineers and artists and idea men and start coming up with ways to rebrand and reinvent themselves. Like they said in the video, the time for relying on, "Hey, we're not DisneyLand but we're definitely the next best thing!" was over. They needed to act accordingly and act immediately. But they didn't. And that's what killed them.
If they had made deal with Disney from the start it would of never been closed and Disney would of not built the new park so to make this park die
Oh, I agree. They should've never allowed Disney to walk off the set. But he did walk off the set. NaraDreamland only had one of two options once the plans for Disney Tokyo were underway. Beg the Disney Company to buy them out (a move which surely would've saved Disney millions upon millions of construction costs) or re-invent themselves into something other than, "Hey, look at how Disney-like this non-Disney theme park totally is!" Instead, they did nothing. And so the inevitable took care of the rest.
@@manvithharikiran2675 Making themselves into a promotional tool for various entertainment companies could have been viable, but that’s a lot of wheeling and dealing to do - maybe they weren't up to it.
Location, location, location. Were it not for these videos about Nara, I never would have heard of the town. However, everyone has heard of Tokyo. Because of that, it has a bigger and more diverse population, exactly what you want with a theme park. Nara was doomed to fail because it was Nara, not a popular location such as Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka.
They could’ve closed for refurbishment and make an original park that might get at least 1-4 million people. But they didn’t and kept the Disney copy.
Nara Dreamland also had the disadvantage of not easy to get there by public transport, *ESPECIALLY* by passenger rail lines (passenger rail transport is still extremely important in Japan). Tokyo Disneyland/Disney Sea is easily accessible by the JR East Keiyo Line from downtown Tokyo, and Universal Studios is located on the end of the JR West Yumesaki Line, a short train ride from JR West Osaka Station.
Am I the only one who never even heard of Disney sea until now?
I had no idea it existed...then again I didn't know really anything about Disney until these videos anyway
Well, as a huge Disney fan, I can safely confirm that Disneysea is probably Disney's best theme park...with an emphasis on THEME park.
I know a lot about Disney and I am a huge fan of it, so I'm kind of dissapointed in myself for not knowing what it was until now lmao
It's a beautiful park so much that I would go again in a heartbeat when I go to Tokyo next year.

just think if the owner of nara dreamland could have just agreed upon the licensing with disney, tokyo disney prob would have never been built and this place would still been around today.
SteelCity1981 Thank Jesus this didn't happen. Tokyo Disney is an absolute DREAM, especially DisneySea. These parks are absolutely amazing, arguably THE best Disney Parks EVER built. I really want to gain enough money to travel there and go when I am an adult!
That's not going to happen. Nara is a second tier city and is not connected to any major Shinkansen route meaning it is inconvenient for anyone to go there. All the good stuff's along the Shinkansen route like the cities of Osaka, Yokohama, and Tokyo.

Ah Japan home to the world's strangest, creepiest, and sometimes cutest stuff in the world since whatever year Astro Boy came out.
Manga came out in 1952 (ended in 1968), anime came out in 1963
Thanks for the info
Dominick Benson even before that, ever seen Kapas?
Katie Bayliss I know what they are, and that they’re the inspiration for Koopas from Mario
I would like to point out that it’s disputed as to what year exactly it happened, but roughly, sometime during the 1900’s, Japan pushed out its first image of tentacle erotica
Am I the only one who had no idea DisneySea was even a thing?
I didn't even know is that a bad thing lol.
Sarcastic Mellon it's a great park. I want to go back next time I'm in Tokyo. Only double ride is Tower of Terror.
I only heard of it earlier this year, and I could have sworn they said it was never built. MANDELA EFFECT.
I shot a video there that place is amazing
Sarcastic Mellon omg I'm not alone here
Wow, Walt Disney's wife was right. They should have not gotten too big. I mean look at the heart and core of the company. The films. All they are now are remakes of their classics and sequels. No original ideas. Probably never again the next 25 years. It just goes to show you that if you get too big and success goes to your head, you truly forget who you are and what you originally did to get there. If Walt Disney was still alive, he would both be proud and ashamed of his company.
eaxctly!😂
the audio on that part was screwed up
LegendKiller1fan Very true
It also kills any opportunity for business in faraway lands to grow on their own. Large entertainment corporations can just enter the market and decimate it with their bottomless financial clout, driving business away from indigenous ventures. Nara Dreamland wasn't the only causality from Disney's and Universal's entry into Japan's theme park market, but it's certainly the most visible evidence of the problem.
That said, you can argue the same point with Japan's corporations entering the American market since the 1960s and sucking out the manufacturing strength of the US with their cheaper, better-built exports.
I guess things evened out between America and Japan.
Uh, disney comes out with a new film like every year or two. This year, Zootopia and Moana, last year was Inside Out, year before that was big hero 6, then Frozen, along with a bunch of minor releases. Point is, Disney makes a plethora of new ideas every single year.
I'd like to know whatever happened to that Takeshi's Castle theme park in Japan, it appeared on the show a number of times.

In the mid-80s a park opened just north of Perth called "Dizzy Lamb" park. Me, being about 6 years old at the time COMPLETELY fell for the "Disneyland" soundalike and insisted we visited (I'm sure I wasn't the only kid). It was a pretty lacklusture park with koalas and a kiddie ferris wheel and a car ride but not much else, and it closed sometime in the late 90s/early 2000s and was abandoned for a while, now it's a paintball range. So yeah, even the most cheapass parks can profit off of Disneyland, at least for a while.
I'm such a proud, proud subscriber...I'm gonna cry lmao smh maaaaane such a fucking legend God bless you and your channel. smh

This is legitimately one of the greatest series on CZcams.
well atleast the porper people and josh got the videos of the park for us!☺
honestly, l was not shocked this was going to happen becuase of sucessful disney and uniserval is at tyoko now these days....😑
l going to watch animat new video now thanks you!☺😊
it is now completely gone! Google earth only shows an empty lot.
It was fun while it lasted i suppose...
fun fact: this isnt the only japanese park to ever closed because of other Disney (or any other mega park in japan)
takakonuma Greenland closed because of managing difficulty as well
Didn’t Takaonuma Greenland also closed because someone died? I know some other Japanese theme park closed because of a death but I swear I think that’s a rumored reason on why that park closed.
Beijing China’s, Wonderland wasn’t even finished
Looks like this is the Theme Park that inspired the anime 'Amagi Brilliant Park' down to the castle, water park area, 'totally not a rip off mascot' and other features. It's a pretty fun Theme Park management series about the cast and crew struggling to turn the park around. Can only assume the writer didn't want it to go the way it did.
I love that the main character's name is also based on Kanye West for some reason 😂

Sounds awesome!
Matt Dibenedetto fan good idea
Probably not well advertised outside of Japan unless you subscribe to some other publication that reports on disney ventures. Sounds like a neat place though!
+cyphre japanese work themselves 24/7, i dont think theyd consider a 3 week vacation there. It is a western idea, investested perhaps by japanese-American developers, apparently japanese culture does not value comfort over work and simple lifestyle.
I knew The Proper People's footage would be in this video 😅 ! They did an extremely goo job on that trip...
"Kinda Tomorrow Land"? That would be "12 Hours From Now Land"
If you knew anything about history, you would know that it started out as a partnership with Disney in which Walt Disney himself and the imagineers designed about 90% of the park. It was about 80% complete when licensing fee disputes came about and Disney pulled out because the Japanese company didn't want to pay the royalties Disney was asking. So they quickly changed it from Disneyland to dream land and finished the last 20%
IKR! It’s like he did ZERO RESEARCH.
Always love when a new vid comes out. I'd really like to see a video on abandoned Olympic venues. I understand some (Bosnia/Sarajevo) being awful and some just plain aged (Berlin, etc.) but Russia and most shockingly Athens from '04 is really bad (I understand the recession, but dang). There are literally tons of abandoned venues that get used for 14-16 days and are never used again. Please do a video on that subject, would definitely appreciate it!
Yes, please! I have always wanted to know what happens to Olympic venues after that location's Olympics is over.
If I wasn't on mobile, I'd give your idea a like. I've seen a few pictures and videos of this before, and its a pretty interesting topic.

You have no idea how much I was looking foreward to this moment since I binge watched all of your other videos. ^^
I've been hoping you'd do Nara Dreamland!! I was so excited seeing this vid was up!
After seeing Exploring With Josh's video on Nara Dreamland, I really wanted to go there and look around. I tried to go to Japan through a school trip, but I couldn't. Its so sad to hear now that it has been demolished. My dreams of coming here are shattered to say the least. But, I do know that there are plenty of other places I can explore, just like how there are many fish in the sea.
Great job Jake! I love this series, keep it up!

can we get one on Centralia PA that would be amazing.
i was going to suggest that
Alicia King do it the more there is then the more likely he is to do it.
Pretty basic, mining of coal and a seam near the landfill which occasionally caught fire lead to the ongoing burning. Its not the most prominent or longest burning coal mine though.
Joshua Cornell still very interesting.
I'll sum up the story. I'll go into some detail, but not a lot to keep it short.
So, Centralia was a thriving town with about 2000 residents, their ancestors being coal miners who settled there, in a forest of the backwoods of rural Pennsylvania. Once technology started advancing, a way to get rid of their garbage was to dump it somewhere and burn it in an open area, in order to prevent forest fires. One time in 1962, while burning some trash, they had done it so many times that trash managed to slip into one of the now abandoned coal mines. The coal caught fire, and they were unable to reach the burning coal because of the mines have long since collapsed. So, the state came in to do the job, and they drilled holes to examine where the fire was. The fire was almost under control, but the state decided to drill holes into the ground, powering the fire with more oxygen. In 1982, a large sinkhole appeared in somebody's yard, so the last straw was to get everyone out of there. 10 people stayed, and ignored the state, and remain there to this day. The fire however, will never end, as it has enough fuel to burn for over 200 years, and it is too hot to put out the flaming coal.

Your videos are amazing. I'm absolutely obsessed with them. Keep up the good work
The music in the background makes the park seem so much creepier. I love it.
Great video! Never disappoint as always! But something confuses me. Was there any sort of legal trouble between Walt Disney and the owner of Nara Dreamland? Cause it's sounds like they're would've been cause they copied key landmarks of Disneyland and I don't know if Disney let them had the rights to do so or what.
I don't believe anything was made public about it. There definitely could have been!
Bright Sun Films It just seems odd to me that they copied their signature castle and supposedly got away with it cause I would think the Disney company had some sort of trademark or copyright on that. Like I feel like they would've sued them for something like that. But I'm also really into law and conspiracy theories, which is why I thought of it.
Sleeping Beauty castle in Anaheim is based on Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Disney can't copyright the look of the castle itself because it isn't theirs to begin with. But that's also why they built Cinderella castle in Tokyo, because THAT is copyrighted.
Maybe the laws between America and Japan didn't match up back then?
If I’m remembering this correctly, the construction of the park was almost complete by the time licensing fell through. That’s why there was such a scramble to remove Disney branding despite everything looking so similar.
May you do Sports Authority? It went bankrupt for Chapter 11.
Remember this?
Your disneyland videos are my favorite. I love that your so interested in it too. abandoned places give me a feeling of curiosity. And wishing I could have seen that place before it went abandoned.
love the inclusion of additional references at the end, really cool. I'm always curious to like dig more, but too lazy to research. Channel is the best!

Yeah sports authority

Yep mine is now a Spirit Halloween lol
I didn't know the entire chain went bankrupt! I mean I suppose that explains why everything was being sold, I just thought it was the two buildings in my town being moved or replaced.
So great you finally talked about this park. though I'm surprised to hear that Disney Sea is the number 1 visited park. if its so popular in Japan, why not build one in Florida?
BlazeHeartPanther Blaze Or LA for people in California
Probably because Sea World is in both California and Florida.
The concept of Disney Sea was actually created for Disneyland. When Michael Eisner was still CEO, he wanted to create a sea-based theme park on the west coast (called WestCot - like Epcot - not sure if I spelled it right), but when Euro Disneyland opened as a big failure, he decided not to. When the company started planning a second park for Tokyo Disneyland, they brought back out the concept for that park.
Which, is about an hour and a half away from Disneyland....I'd rather go to Knotts Berry Farm which has a waterpark.
YESSSSS 🙌😍
tokyo disney looks absolutely gorgeous and is definitely up there on my long list of things i want to do in japan. the jules verne inspired rides look incredible, you can tell they went all out

Bright Sun Films Hate to be a knowitall here, but Disney Parks is NOT the biggest theme park chain. It's 3rd. Sure they have some very popular parks, but they have only 6. Six Flags (Great Adventure, Magic Mountain, Discovery Kingdom) is the biggest, Cedar Fair (Cedar Fair, Knotts Berry Farm, King's Dominion) is 2nd, and Disney is 3rd. Busch Gardens is 4th (Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Busch Gardens Tampa) I think.
Dan Abnormal busch gardens is actually part of seaworld entertainment
Bright Sun Films instead of building Tokyo Disneyland why couldn't they keep Nara dreamland and it still would have been open today
