Oiling a Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive and Light Up After Dark

- See this unique Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive being oiled ready
for her run on newly refurbished track. Then see her lit up after dark.
She is in fine shape showing off for this years Harvest Festival at
the Greene County Historical Society. She was the hit of the Festival.
It doesn't get any better than this!
This locomotive in 1916 when it was built came with a kerosene headlight.
In 1920 that was replaced with a Sunbeam pattern 1018 Golden Glow headlight.
Sometime in later years after the loco was retired from revenue service,
the headlight was replaced with a Sunbeam Golden Glow type FF18.
(info provided by James D. Weinschenker in his book: Waynesburg &
Washington Railroad Second Number 4)
Power for the lights was originally provided by a steam powered generator located just
behind the smoke stack. We are going to try and get it to run with compressed air for
next years Harvest Festival and are seeking grant money to get it under steam, so keep your fingers crossed on that one and wish us luck!

I wish they'd bring back steam engines. Not only were they a well oiled piece of machinery, they were a work of art.
They certainly were Melody. This one is very special, near
and dear to all our hearts here at the historical society. Someday
with a lot of grant money we hope to get her back under steam.
Always is a pleasure to have you visit with us and hear
from you my friend.
Awesome job on replacing the track ...and in time for this event! Lots of great volunteers (yourself included) show their passion for showing this beauty off ...and she definitely shines! Loved the nighttime video with the light effects. (You can just imagine her coming round the bend for the next station.) Keeping up the maintenance & support of this type endeavor is never ending. Glad they have some dedicated folks like those you introduced (& yourself) helping out! Kudos!
Thanks so much David for the really nice comment. It is much
appreciated and hope you and family had a wonderful Christmas
my friend.
Mr Cole, I want to personally Thank You for all of the work you did on the track & for all of the great videos you made to promote our W&W RR project at the Greene County Historical Society Museum. We are proud to have you as a member of the crew.
One of the best trackmen out there.
Your welcome, we all did a great job and had a good time. Was a
special event that took a lot of teamwork and cooperation to
get accomplished but we did it!!!
The end result of all the work done this year, for the first time in about 90 years, WWRR engine no 4 is parked next to coach 6 the last 2 surviving pieces of Waynesburg Washington railroad rolling stockThanks to the hard work by the entire WW shop crew!
Everyone did a fantastic job, great teamwork and we all had a lot of fun. Could not thank you enough for allowing me to be a part
of your efforts. Was an honor and privilege to work with such
great folks as you guys are.
Trains Magazine should honor No. 4 by having her on the cover of their great magazine.
Your totally right Curt! That would be awesome. Perhaps you can
contact them and see if they would be interested? It's worth a shot.
Appreciate your watching tonight my friend.
02:25 There is more science to oiling than you might think: Some years ago in the UK they rebuilt one of the big main-line Express Locos. While she was out on a run they found that the main bearings were running hot from lack of oil. These long-distance loco's had oil cups on the footplate, with pipes running to the lube points on the bearings, with 'rope' to 'Wick' the oil and control the flow. They had used modern synthetic rope, that had reacted to the oil an swelled up to block the flow. So they replaced the rope with Flax, (what had been used originally), but still had a problem. A 'shout out' the the restoration community produced a can of oil that one of the old shed-men had snagged when they shut down the shed, of the right viscosity. No longer made! They managed to persuade one of the oil companies to analyse it, and do a One-Off run for them. Problem solved!
Though we might think that we know it all with our computers and CNC machines, sometimes we are reminded that back in the day, they too knew a thing or two! Things that WE have either forgotten, or just plain never knew.
Very interesting comment! Thank you very much for sharing that
knowledge, something I did not know. Do appreciate your writing
in and for watching my good man.
A story in steel 1930's LMS railroad documentary. Great watch.

Thank you for the suggestion, a very interesting watch!
Love old steam locomotives. We never had coal burners out here. Started out with two Baldwin 2-8-0 oil burners were delivered in January of 1914.
Glad you enjoyed Michael. Am wondering were the oil fired locos back then a bit of a rarity?
She moved a lot better this time with that lube-job she had! It's really nice that it is maintained as rolling stock like that, and not just plopped on a piece of track somewhere! There are a few narrow gauge locomotives near me that are like that. They were used in the logging industry back in the day, and are a thing of beauty, but exposed to the elements unfortunately. Glad to see this one be able to get indoors once and awhile! Did I mention the awesome track she is on? That track makes to mobility happen, and will be in great shape for many years to come! Thanks Dave! 😊
That's pretty cool, don't know if you would want to do it, but
would be very interesting video (at least to me), to show those
on your channel sometime. Do thank you for the very nice comment
my friend. And your right, this will be a focal point of the museum for
a lot of years to come now and help keep interest up in the RR here.
@@ccrx6700 I can show the narrow gauge engine that is fairly close to me, then there is a huge engine just north of us (those ran along the river). The narrow gauge engine is truly an oddity in this area because of the terrain, but I believe those trains just ran along the ridges to an area that is flatter to the east, then offloaded the logs onto larger trains to Milwaukee & Chicago. I'll make some videos when I can - there is also an interesting tunnel to the north 😊
@@PlanetMojo awesome, but not telling you what to video, it's your channel and you know what your viewers want to see, only saying it would surely interest me. But everything you make interests me too! We have a lot in common. Also really do appreciate your faithfulness in watching my stuff and your help with me getting started making these 😊
I did a little research last night, and the little narrow gauge train to the south of us was actually a short line, and it climbed the massive hills we have around here. The train was called the Dinky, and it has some interesting history. I'll definitely be doing a video on it!
@@PlanetMojo Awesome! I cant wait!!!

Sharp looking. Thinking of its builders date this locomotive was becoming an oddity by 1916. Add in the fact its narrow gauge and every RR was looking for bigger .more powerful locos this little gal was an orphan but your group gave it the TLC it deserves. Excellent work!
Thank Paul and you are certainly correct in that. The reason
they got this Mogul was because of the extreme curves they
had, one of which was a 33 degree curve. They had early on
tried larger loco but it wouldn't hold the curves well.
The other railroads back then had the Tim the Tool Man Taylor
concept of "more power" lol
It's great to see this old loco being preserved and cared for! You folks definitely have a passion for keeping these pieces of history around for the next generation to enjoy.
Thanks Eric! Hopefully someday you might be able to come and

Such a beautiful steamer... love the bell and lighting, too. These were certainly maintenance-intensive back in the day, eh? 1:48 These oil caps reminded me of a scene from one of the greatest war movies (in my opinion), The Train, by John Frankenheimer.
In the film, the French engineers would sabotage the engines by sticking coins in the oil caps to halt the flow of oil, much to the chagrin of the Germans.
Excellent to see the engine given some love here. Keep it up.

I have no idea what kind of air volume would be needed to do it, but it would be neat to run the Pyle generator from compressed air to light the lights... then you'd have that nice little whine they make.

Hey bud. Just stumbled across your channel. I wanted to comment on the most recent video so you see it. I am a tri-axle driver who hauls out of the tipple durring the winter months. 3rd year doing so. i am a huge railfan and avid historian in our regional coal industry and heritage. i have seen you a time or two pull up behind the tipple in your hi-railer and wait for us to get loaded. I have met several employees at the mine. Anyway great channel. Keep up the great work down there and keep making great videos. Long live King Coal! FJB!
Awesome! Great to have you here with us. Next time you see me
jump out and say hello! I always wait on rail for you guys to get
loaded first, I know a good many of you guys get paid per ton
or per load you make a day and don't want to hold anybody up.
Glad you enjoy the channel and be safe on those roads! That Kirby
road is nuts right now with all the frack sand and water trucks along
with the dump trucks plus supplies coming in to the mine.
I might also add great news for the future of this mine, they got
permit for #3 empoundment which will add 28 or more years to
the mine life, plus they tell us they can sell all the coal we can
produce! Shooting for 7 million tons in 2022. Right now they have
more orders than they can fill!
Hey that's great news. If only all facilities and gen plants in the region had the same news. Today was a hell of a morning down there. Apparently the silo was over 70% full so they decided to load the train before the trucks. We waited till after 7 till the train was loaded. Then I guess both 38s were having issues and they couldn't get it moving. I didn't get loaded till 830. Just 1 load today after the delay. May not be back for a while either as i heard today was the last day for the keycon contract. But we'll see you again soon I'm sure. Keep them rails shiney!
Merry Christmas all

Lovely to see here moving and stopping in the perfect position for a photo. That lighting in the ab looks great. I hope we get a look around the cab one day. The oil round was interesting to see A bit different to how our rods retain their oil. I wonder if your engineers added more as they were on the move Something they banned ours from doing after a few accidents.
Glad you enjoyed the show my friend. Good question on adding
the oil, but highly doubt they did on this loco. I'm also sure that if
this loco was on a main line track run for a long distance more
oil would have been used, but since it was only going to move
400 feet a lot wasn't really needed. I did give a short tour of the cab
in this video I had made sometime ago if you would care to watch
it sometime.

HELLO DAVE ITS IS RANDY AND I LIKE U VIDEO IS COOL AND OILING A NARROW STEAM LOCOMTIVE AND LIGHT UP AFTER DARK AND (4 W&W W RR IS COOL DAVE THANKS FRIENDS RANDY AND MERRY CHRISMAN AND HAPPY NEW YEAR'S THANKS RANDY
Thank you Randy! We hope you and your family also had a
very Merry Christmas my friend.
You know, 1 day you should really fire it up😅
Oh how awesome that would be, but it would take a ton of work and
a lot of money at this point. Appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the video my friend.
@@ccrx6700 I know it's a lot of work, but that's the fun part getting to really understand how these giants work plus it would be really cool for all your neighbors, family and friends to see, it's so worth it 😁 and you're welcome I love trains in fact i'm Building a lego narrow gauge locomotive similar to this one.
Gotta keep the ole gal oiled good!
Yep Rick, she is very well taken care of. Hope you had a really
good Christmas my friend.
@@ccrx6700 I sure did Dave, hope your Christmas was good.
It could use a little paint on the wheels and the front boiler mounts and a few other areas. It does look pretty good otherwise.
Your hired Eddie! We can use all the help we can get and you
are the man to do it! Report tomorrow morning at 7 am, and
I don't mean 7:01 ....LOL Thanks for watching my friend and
hope you had a very good Christmas.
Check out the evening shots, the wheels were painted the day before the Harvest Festival along with a few other touch ups!
Nice old Steam Locomotive, what gauge is this? & from the video it looks like the center wheel is of the type without a flange. Is that right?. Good to see people dedicated to keeping history alive.
We sure do think it's a gem James. She gets as best care as
can be with the limited amount of money available. 36 inch gage and
yes sir the middle drive is blind. When in service it had to negotiate
some pretty sharp curves, up to 33 Degrees!
What a great steam engine!! I assume that its not operational at this time?
Yes it is Mike. No it's not being able to be under steam, but
it is very well kept up otherwise and stored inside. thanks
so much for tuning in and watching, this is a unique
piece of history for sure. There are a lot more vids of this
loco and the W&W RR on a playlist if you would sometime
care to view them.

Imagine this railroad being a really well known tourist railroad with the engine and coach for train rides but I have a question when their going to build more track how are they going to do it?
Depends on what kind of grant money we can get whether we
will be able to extend the track. And if we do then it's all going
to be done by hand and a few limited machines we have. I for
sure will make videos if and when that happens Aiden.
Great job on rebuilding the track are there plans to extensively restore this locomotive to operating condition?
Thank you very much for the nice comment.
We are going to try and get it to run with compressed air for next years festival and are seeking grant money to get it under steam, so wish us luck! Do appreciate
your writing in and for watching the show today my friend.
@@ccrx6700 awesome I wish you the best of luck in this extensive restoration
Now to fire the boiler
Gonna need some grant money and some dedicated folks to
get that done, but we are keeping our fingers crossed and
exploring options Wayne!
merrx Christmas
Marry Christmas to you also and hope you had a very good day my friend.
Would the spray can of lucas ed and tacky be a better choice or it just won't penetrate to where it's needed? i've used it with great success on modern heavy machines from 1950's on up. also instead of cotton waste what about using sponges?
Good question and I don't have an answer, will run that by Mr.
Weinshenker the next time I see him. He has a You Tube channel
and the link is in the description and I'm sure if you made a
comment on one of his videos he would be kind enough to
give you a much better answer than I.
@02:59 bearings NOT Class 1 compliant! 😝
Doubt if we ever upgrade to roller bearings, course that would
take away the authenticity and charm also. :-)
You fooled me with (Light Up) I thought you meant fire up.
When will number 4run on its own power?
We are hoping that next fall we can run it via compressed air
Michael, that should be obtainable. To get it under steam
is going to take a lot of money so who knows when or if that
will happen, but keep your fingers crossed for us.
Dave does #4 run or is it static display only.
Currently it is static, we are seeking grant money to try and get
it back under steam, that is a huge undertaking as you can imagine.
So wish us luck! Do appreciate your watching Phillip and hope
you had a great Christmas Day.
Do they plan on making it run on it's own power in the future ?
We are going to try and get it to run with compressed air for next years festival and are seeking grant money to get it under steam, so keep your fingers crossed on that one! Do appreciate
your writing in and for watching the show today Kirk.
Most folks who knew how to operate, maintaitn and repair these beasts are now busy pushing up daisies. That's what comes after railroading: daisy - upping!
Oh not me Robin. They gonna cremate me and then spread my
ashes on the Cumberland Mine RR so they can tamp me in
instead of all the spilled coal......LOL Do appreciate your support
of our channel my friend. Railfantastic, see I remembered!
Is that an acetylene lamp?
Was originally a kerosene, this is a 110 powered. You can
read more about the headlight in the video description. Thanks
for watching the show today.
Is the black color on the engine, paint? How does it withstand the heat?
This engine hasn't ran for over 20 years Shirley. In the days of old
the boiler and firebox were covered with asbestos to keep the surface
paint from blistering and also to keep the heat in. So with no fire
and this engine kept inside, it's easy to keep it looking nice, plus
they have some dedicated people there who take very good care
of this old girl.
How much track is available to run on?
Right now 400 feet of track. We are seeking grant money to
extend track and also hopefully get her back under steam,
but that gonna be a tremendous dream to accomplish so
wish us luck. Do appreciate your writing in and for watching
Martyn.
we all know a dry stroke is bad, and that she (we all guys) need some exercise... LOL
Will she ever be under steam again ccrx?
We are going to try and get it to run with compressed air for next years festival and are seeking grant money to get it under steam, so keep your fingers crossed on that one! Do appreciate
your writing in and for watching the show today my friend.
