Meta are certainly not “pioneers” or “blazing the trail” in multi-modal models as you espouse. GPT-4o was announced publicly almost 2 weeks ago, while Chameleon was only announced a week later. We appreciate your enthusiasm for AI news, but please ensure your enthusiasm is tempered with accuracy.

they very possibly didn't get started on this before openai did themselves as openai has likely been working on this in parallel for ages, but for what it's worth meta did bring out its chameleon paper detailing a working model they had based on this idea nearly a year ago (july 2023) so a lot earlier than just last week at least.
