  • On the final weekend of winter, Mike and Tom spend two nights winter camping in a lean-to at Johns Brook Lodge (JBL) to hike high peaks of the Upper Great Range, Haystack, Basin, and Saddleback. The trip was capped off by a sunrise summit on Big Slide Mountain.

    This was an amazing way to finish out the winter 46er season. Haystack, Basin, and Saddleback are near the top of my list for favorite High Peaks. I ended up climbing 17 peaks to catch up with Tom. We both have 5 left, but only one in common, Gothics. Can't wait for next winter!

    Once again another epic winter 46er weekend. Clear skies, and perfect conditions made this amazing. Big Slide was utterly spectacular for first ever winter 46er sunrise summit. Trip truly was a top 3 amongst over 100 46er summits. Looking forward to a finish next winter.

    This was a real treat. Saddleback, Basin, Haystack has to be one of my best high peak adventures. I loved your light set up during the Big Slide morning scene at the lean to. And of course your sunrise footage was great and edited with style. This is a top contender for #1 Outside Chronicles episode for 2021 -but I'm hoping you'll surprise us.

      Thanks for both! We really had two great days of weather. That area of the High Peaks is super epic. I was happy to return. Those peaks were a blur as I did them as part of the Great Range day hike. So glad we had to do them in the winter.

      You will love them. Haystack is such a cool approach over Little Haystack and the Saddleback cliffs are pretty cool. They have become some of my favorite summits.

    I haven’t done Big Slide and Saddleback yet but I did get Haystack that was the 4th High Peak that I knocked off during my 21 hour hike alongside Redfield Gray Peak and Skylight

    That sunrise!!! Seeing how 'low' the trail sign was in the winter gives a clear illustration of just how much snow is up there. Curious, how would your round trip time for the 3 summits on this winter hike have differed in the summer?

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles  Před 2 lety +1

      That's hard to say. If you get good winter conditions like we had in this video (no new snow, packed trails, no wind/snow) I find I move quicker in winter. No mud or rocks, just a sideway of snow. On the other hand, you could have several inches of snow, sub-zero temps, etc. And you are right, the snow pack is incredible, Take one step off trail and you are up to your waist or more.
