Cubs often mimic the behavior of their mothers. This is one way they learn important survival skills. They eat what mom eats, investigate what mom investigates, and may copy her actions around other bears. 273 and her spring cub approached Brooks Falls on July 16 and encountered a single adult female. 273 reacted defensively to back down the other bear. Her cub decided to help mom.

I love animals especially bears. That mother bear is performing an attack while gently pushes away her cub of the frontline. This is an amazingly high level of care and control of instincts.
What is your definition of instinct? Was it always there, or it evolved from nothing? And why did it appear, if it wasn't there for the first female bear, to begin with?

no other apex predator the size of a bear eat their prey alive like bears do.
sure you can say, "i once saw a lion eating a gazelle alive" or "i once saw moutain lion eating a deer alive", but these are very rare occurrences and they usually only happen when an apex predator has already spent too much energy or is incapable of killing its prey before eating.
contrast that with bears. with bears, it is very rare for a bear to kill its prey before eating it.
sure you can say, "i once saw a bear kill a buffalo and then eat after the buffalo died", but once again, this is very rare and out of the ordinary.
you ever see a bear get a hold of someone's pet dog? have you ever seen a bear get a hold of a human?
if you ever seen a bear get a hold of a dog and heard the dog's cries, i guarantee you would hate bears too and you would be on the side of killing all bears in the world.

I would say that this behavior has nothing to do with intelligence. I would like to know how the first female bear, to appear on earth, was behaving in such cases. I would say that it was the same behavior, with the first female bear to appear. All female bears, were born with that same instinct, already in their genes. It could not evolve from scratch. Impossible. Evolution is impossible. Adaptation yes, but not evolution. God created bears and all that exist.
The little one will be a good fighter one day, like its mama.
Mama bear has skills. She protected her baby, who wouldn't leave her side ( being noisy) while backing down the intruder. She controlled the situation by slapping that bear in the face and backing him into the water while keeping an eye on her cub at the same time. WHOA! Don't mess with mama!!!

The offending bear was gaunt and a young adolescent. Probably really hungry trying to scoop the cub. Also, adolescent bears go through a tough time establishing themselves and don't make the best decisions. Mama took it easy on him. She knew he was still stupid.

Sometimes kids just get in the (harm's) way, but mom 🐻 IS their ONLY protection.
Just guessing this is no more than a territorial dispute. I've seen (on film) boars eat cubs but they were big and the mother was essentially helpless.This sow could have ripped the intruder to shreds.

Because, The probability of bear mom packing off intruder is high. Bears are tough fighters even when small like this cub.
