You'd cut costs by buying the paint in 5 gallon pales. You'd cut labor by pressure washing the lose material and dirt off the wood and allow to dry throughly. Further labor would be saved by using an airless paint sprayer that draws paint directly from the pale.

This is good advice. Power washing is good advice.
This commenter is right on the money. A clean dry surface that's well gripped will have much better adhesion. And will give you an extra 10 years out of your paint job. Yes! I said an extra TEN years. . .
It also helps if you seal all the cracks with caulking. If you want your barn to last, use caulking and good exterior paint.

Hi Taylor. You’ve just shown us that you never run out of work when you’re on a farm. You and Brent always complement each other so well when you’re working on a project. You really should be wearing goggles and a hard hat when you are working on those trees. We are all concerned about your safety. Stay positive, keep smiling, and keep those great videos coming. 🐄🚜🌽😉😊

Springtime chores never end. The barn looks great and the grass is greening quickly. Dandelions have deep roots so this may be the reason that they are good aerators. Thanks for sharing!

You are one heck of a hard-working woman. My uncle just had the barn whitewashed every 3 years. Did it inside and out. Took the guy about 1 day to do it all. We had to hose the barn down inside and out so the whitewash would stick. Also got rid of the dirt on the outside. Still miss the farm life. Too old to do it now. Wish I had bought a farm when I was younger. Still miss the farm life. I am passing down to my grandkids the life I had as a farmer. Have a great summer, stay safe and God Bless

I've always found it best to do all my prep work at once (at least one whole wall) and get it out of the way. Then you don't have to stop painting which causes your paint to start drying in the brush. You REALLY need to apply the paint much thicker. It is not so much that the wood is soaking it up. There just isn't enough paint on the wall. And starting at the very top and working down is much smarter. The way you're doing it can allow some oops of various types to mess up what you've already painted.

Dear Taylor, I love you and your videos and I do have a suggestion on painting the barn. I thought I was too late but maybe you will get this in time to be of a help for you. Among other things I was once a painting contractor. Scrape the peeling, then sand with 50 weight paper. This is for adhesion. Don’t go crazy, once over just to rough it up. Then dust off with your favorite broom, removing dust, dirt, and spider webs. It doesn’t take much longer, but your chances of not having to do this again next year are much greater. It probably explains that on the directions on the can. This process is especially important on exterior painting. I hope this doesn’t piss you off, I think what you do is great. You are a true farm girl! That’s a compliment. Ken from Pa.

I know you don't mind helping but I think this is a little much to expect the hired farm hand to scrape and paint his huge barn with a hand scrapper and a 4" brush. I would suggest if Brent wants to do it rather than hiring it out, he invest in a good power washer with extension, a good paint sprayer and construct some type of cover for the windows. That should result in a much better paint job and speed things up considerably.

22:41 Just a suggestion, but if you had set up a camera overlooking that field and did a time lapse of that yard being cut would have been something people would have liked to see. To see a big job like that done in its entirety is just satisfying.

Hi Taylor, I’m back. Forgive me from sticking my nose in again about painting the barn. The sanding can almost be considered fun, trust me. Your paint store sells pole sanders. A pole with a sad pad on the end. Not expensive but will make this fun, fast, and effective. Take paper, fold length wise to fit the pad, cut it with an inch putty knife, and mount it to the pad. Cut it like you’re opening a letter (envelope). One or two strokes, and you’re done. You can slide it the whole length of the barn if you like. Have a race with Brent, it’s a real kick!

Good Moring Taylor and Brent, Barn is looking good with a fresh coat of paint. Here is a possible idea, given how large the lawn area is; couple sheep to help with the lawn mowing? Although with the cost of the fence to contain the sheep, it may make more sense just to keep mowing each week? I wonder if gas and oil costs over time would equal the cost of the fence for the same time period? Then factoring in still having to mow 3 to 4 times a year; even with the sheep grazing. Regards, Bob

When dehorned always dehorned Jan coldest day possible as it helps to stop the bleeding. We also had wooden stantions. Not sure how a tie stall would work. Also bulls always had a ring put in their noses. Just a safety precaution. If those tips help great!!! If not well its there to help anyone else. Enjoy your week. 😊

Painting can be alot of work, but makes everything look good when done. Looks alot better where you painted. Trees can be a real menace where they interfere with a field. Makes me glad that we live in a mostly treeless area, though we now have alot of trees around the buildings after my folks spent many years to get some shade around here. Had to hire a tree trimmer after alot of winter kill last year. Not practical for an operating farm as you have to do it yourself.

I'm not sure about Maine elect power utilities, but here in NC if you've got a tree with the potential to damage power lines, the utility company will come trim or remove the tree. In some cases, they will do it without you having to call them.

I think something is wrong with your sink. So Yankee... :P Also.... really wish you had ear protection on. Glasses would be nice too - I've had some crap fling into my eyes before and I got lucky. The internet would tell you to have leather chaps, etc., but just be safe. Also, the dandelion thing about aeration.... not real, like a lot of old wives tales. It's just a weed.

Taylor, wouldn’t it have been easier to bring the Sawdust truck along so you could put all the branches on it making only one trip?
