  • Join us for a trip on the old wooden escalators at Wynyard station before they were turned into a piece of artwork.
These escalators were first installed in 1932, which was the same year that the Harbour Bridge was opened. That means they’ve been carrying foot traffic for over 80 years. Though it should be noted that while three wooden escalators were installed in 1932, the fourth was added and the other three were replaced during the 1950s.
These have now been replaced with the old wooden versions converted into a sculpture which hangs at the bottom end of the newly installed staircases and is a nice way of retaining some of the heritage value of the old wooden stairs.
