  • Matt Moreman is the founder of Obsessed Garage. Visitors to his website are greeted with bold blue letters on a white backdrop: "Do Average Elsewhere."
    I met Matt at a Koch Chemie event in Atlanta, where the German-based brand invited dozens of detailers, distributors and influencers to play with - and learn about - their fantastic line up of chemicals.
    You can find Koch Chemie products on Amazon now, which is pretty cool:
    Amazing interior cleaner (Pol Star) : bit.ly/PolStar
    All purpose cleaner (Green Star) : bit.ly/GreenStarHawkPro
    Fantastic compounds and polishes : bit.ly/CompoundsAndPolishes
    Anyway, this video is a long-form, free-flowing conversation. Which is very Matt, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him. The only time we made an edit on the long interview is when I was asking an unintelligible rambling question that was so hard to hear it would have been distracting. But once the long-form interview begins, every quote of his is included in full, and in chronological order.
    Matt really does have a cool line up of products - you can check them out here: www.obsessedgarage.com
    Also, wanna see that “hater” video I mentioned? Hard to believe it was way back in January 2019: • Should you buy the Obs...

    Cool video and thank you for posting! Here's my take I view Matt as a disruptor (in a good way) in the detailing world and got a simple thing as washing your car become an experience and got everyone in the detailing world going after the same thing, he presented products not everyone knew or not on their radar now is the best thing ever, for a short time he was able to change and or made everyone aware of whats going on in the detail industry, the one thing that always stuck with me with Matt is when he had a video explaining something and his main point was "Respect the source" which is true. At the end of the day and with whats going on in our lives right now we have to be able to filter the good and the bad and make a conscious decision to pick which works for us and we cannot fault or name call anyone like Matt as a narcissist or narcissistic for expressing something he's passionate about. He has a strong personality which make people a little bit intimidated ( i was when i first saw his videos) and that has been the issue that some people point out but if you watch his videos you will understand more about the person and i came up with a conclusion that he simply just being like everyone else...human meaning he has highs and lows, passionate and determined on something he truly believes, won't you be like him if u did? it goes to say he represents a little bit part of everyone of us that wish we could say or do but couldn't or didn't just like anyone who's reading this lol. jmho

    @nathane2243 Před 3 lety +1

    Great video. Detailing is a sales business. The key to wealth is to invest. Invest in employees to put money in your pocket. You won't go anywhere long term flying solo. You need to open a shop, and hire people, Offer window tinting in shop and mobile etc......opening up windows to other opportunities. This will create wealth and you'll go from 80k a year to 160k+ easily a year. As the owner, you can focus on growing your business and leave the grunt work to your employees. So many people are in their comfort zone, that they're scared to take that next step to success. Scared that they won't make it, the business will fail. Anxiety plays a big part of this and it will always hold people back.
    The detailing business is so saturated with products. 99% of products are the same thing with a different label. Every single product gives you shine and gloss. You don't need to spend thousands on products. You can do professional work with products from walmart. These product companies pray on those who are OCD, and they will chase and chase the next product spending thousands where they can actually open up their own retail store selling products. It's insane! Remember, detailing was around before most of you were born and look what they worked with for awesome results. They didn't need foam cannons and 2 bucket methods etc....Marketing

    You have nothing to apologize for and you were right to call Matt out. If OG is engaged in e-commerce, whether retail or the internet, it's not too much to expect some service after the sale; or at least, some help with contacting the manufacturer. Perhaps, OG should disclaim his policy of "you're screwed" if something goes wrong more prominently on his site. I like his honesty and appreciate the research he's done, but his attitude reflects a certain selfishness that consumers do not deserve. Afterall, it's customers who keep him in business.

    • @RogueScum
      @RogueScum Před 3 lety +2

      The smart ones keep him in business. The ones who get upset (not saying you) with what and how he explains how he runs his business, those types of people shouldn't be buying from him. I'm a strong believer of "the customer is not always right" and hes always said in the past that he does what he does with the understanding that you, the customer/consumer, is not stupid. But alot of the headaches he's had to address come from people who unfortunately are just plain stupid and have this self-entitled mentality that's been coddled by these big companies who bend to the customers will. And usually sells sub par quality products.

    • @paulbondy9077
      @paulbondy9077 Před 3 lety +1

      @@RogueScum Nordstrom doesn't make 99% of what they sell. Home Depot doesn't, TireRack doesn't, Autozone doesn't, etc. etc. There's nothing special about the fact that he sells something that he doesn't make. If you're going to sell these things, even if you don't make them, part of the challenge is servicing the customer. Matt's "we get you 97% of the way there" really translates into what Allen said, which is if something goes wrong, you the buyer are expected to fix it. Which runs entirely contrary to the entire premise of the sale which is that you believe that Matt knows more about this stuff and has researched this stuff than you the consumer does, and you're putting your trust in him. NOT that you are an engineer by trade, can fix things, but are too lazy to test different products. We are trusting Matt's skillset to recommend a very good product. So that doesn't mean everything has to work perfectly, but if something is wrong he needs a mechanism in his business to fix that. Service must be part of any successful business plan IMO, and right now that's the missing link for OG. They will get there, but for now it's caveat emptor.

    • @RogueScum
      @RogueScum Před 3 lety

      The issue he's bringing up though are the entitled douches are order a pressure washer and months down the line (especially when they're using every single day) are running into issues that wouldn't be up to OG or even the manufacturer cause its a machine with parts, parts that can break down, parts the need maintenance, no different than someone who buys a new car and gets mad at the dealership when their warranty is up and holds them responsible.
      We live in a world of too many people believing "the customer is always right" and catering to the customer, well even I as a customer, think its trash, although I very much see myself as a prosumer and do the research and make smart decisions when buying things.
      Hes gone on record saying, and its on the site and the confirmation emails after you order something, if something is broken or damaged during the shipping process, contact them and they're make it right. But we can't enable the motion of wanting "customer service" because you're not smart enough to figure it out, know your stuff, or even just have common sense. The assumption is that you, the customer, are not stupid. Period.

    • @paulbondy9077

      @@RogueScum That wasn't my experience with my OG purchase at all, and the service portion of a business goes beyond those things broken or damaged during the shipping process. I can't speak to who Matt was referencing...you'd have to ask him.

    Matt is the World's greatest Narcissist Salesman. He is the P.T. Barnum of our generation.
    He sells other companies products while preaching to "always honor the source". The man is a marketing machine and a genius about finance and making a profit.
    For example: He sells plastic buckets for $600, his followers buy buckets for $600.
    He has multiple giveaways for people with a lottery ticket mentality. He takes the profits and buys Porsches and $1.7M homes.
    His followers life vicariously though him as if his life was theirs, yearning to buy pictures of his cars and hopefully see a picture of his new house.
    Matts power of persuasion is almost unequaled. He sells people high end stuff that they likely cannot afford under the premise that it somehow makes them elite.
    Matt chides people not to be losers or to get a better job. The same people buy his t-shirts with similar catchy sayings. The man is a genius.

      @@number1pappy It's quite amazing. Almost every video he refers to people as losers and douchebags. Las Vegas was built on the illusion that you can win in raffles, lotteries or any other game of chance. That's why gambling is called a "fools tax". How many "giveaways" do you think Matty has bought merch to enter? He's too smart for that. He has almost a cult following of people that may shave a circle on top of their head (assuming they don't have their own bald spot), wear OG shirts with lime green untied tennis shoes while they pick up empty pop cans in their apartment complex parking lot in OG buckets, while launching snot rockets. Collinite, Optimum Opti-gel, Stoner Invisible glass, P&S line, McGuiars are EXCELLENT VALUE PRODUCTS. If the objective is to capture 20% of a given market, price may not factor into the purchasing decision criteria. I suspect pressure washer analysis project was plebe outreach. Oh Matt... come on man. This is not the person I spoke with 3 years ago at GT Smokie's event. 20:05 -because sometimes the simplest is not the best and because for the professional who is paid to create a solution for a private owner plays by a different rule set than an online retailer who does not have a telephone number; we must support what we sell and "the best" is, many times, not the most simple nor a solution which can be distributed to the masses as the masses seek are seeking what is simple and "dummy proof" . 20:11 so the concept of simple = "it sucks" applies to pressure washers but not coatings? IIRC, you expressed the concept of how more expensive and demanding pressure washers are worth it, yes? But a coating product that contains a far higher active ingredient that requires proper training on the use of the product "sucks"? 20:20 -"why would you do that?" because it's a superior product, end result and protection. 20:25 - I was under the impression that you promoted and curated said "holy grail" products? Is it a stretch to observe that you can't profit from products you'll never be given access to and this could affect your opinion on the subject? 20:30 -I agree in some ways. Ironically, sometimes folks are prepared to use a "wet towel", using a product which requires being vetted prior to being being given access to ("corner cutters" need not apply....) and a more complex application process with a pro-only coating such as Modesta to achieve the exact results you want to reach. 20:07 -"coating" is just a word. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, the good stuff is not the easiest to apply anymore than the best engineered powertrain is cheap nor simple. The cars you purchase are not simple in this way and definitely not "cheap"/"easy" by and large. Stick to your guns brother, honor your original OG concepts and you'll see you're using some doublespeak.
    For posterity's sake I want to make it clear that I am not suggesting an OTC coating product can't satisfy the needs of a DIY'er. But one can't say that "the best" is not the most simple while simultaneously saying "more complex is crap" without an intrinsic conflict of interest.
    19:58 -I'm going to leave my comment with this quote.

    I totally get it as far as quality products and using what just works best.. that's for me though for satisfaction and peace of mind get the best thing you can the first time but as rar as profiting goes... it doesn't matter as long as the job gets done, the clients wants and needs are met and you're not wasting time. in the end. the customer pays for any and all chemicals and pressure washers you get ...so whether you buy a thousand dollar product that lasts 10 yrs or 10 one hundred dollar products that each last a yr each... you're not buying it for yourself. you're buying it to use and make money off of, so top quality products in this case are irrelevant. as long as the quality of the job isn't comprised. I don't effin care what I use. now. for my own personal use I will get the best I can afford. I hate detailers .. and I'm one of them lol. 90 % of the industry is all gimmicks and colorful bottles that do absolutely the same thing as all the rest...its all marketing and fancy names. look at Chemical Guys. they have a million products that look cool and have scents added but they charge 10 times more for the one that smells good. smh. don't be fools people.. find a quality product that doesn't cost a fortune and cstick to it to make a killing. I maximize profits by using the cheapest products that do the damn job. that's it. I make 70k a year detailing part time. and I decide when and what to do no obligation. if I want to fckin chill out all day. I can ..if I want to work 15hrs straight. I can. I've had expressive things in the detailing game, the customer only cares that their vehicle shines and looks good. I charge a lot at first and get complaints from new customers.. why are you charging so much? then I tell them.. ok, you see your car how destroyed it was?.. that's why. see it now?! , how perfect it is? I can keep it this way for 50$ a week. then they think a second and realize that that's a quarter of what I charged them for the first detail and accept my offer. so I get paid 50 dollars per car I clean every week. that takes me like 30 min to clean because it's already clean! I'm not doing much work at all. that's what everyone needs to freaking learn. work smarter not harder.. and that's what I think Matt is trying to convey... because he doesn't bs. straight up brutal truth about everyday products and what you should aspire to get. I'll keep my crap Ryobis coming and when I get home enjoy my 2000$ washer. although I am getting the new Active 2.0 for the flow to speed up cleaning time.

      I’ve never heard of Koch Chemie but it seems like it’s a German company? I live I. Germany now so I’ll be checking it out. Maybe I can get some good deals on it here.

      Thanks for reminding me to change my logo, I quit watching all those losers when they disrespected our country and flag. You must be at least 16 years old based on your comments so I won’t hurt your feelings anymore.

    Love reading through these comments to see how triggered or offended some people are. Really, what is the expectation? Is Matt to be your best friend?
    Personally I don't want that. I value the investment of time Matt has given to bring top tier products to consumer markets. I associate my time with a monetary value, Matt maximizes that for me and consequently I purchase from OG.
    I am concerned with results I can achieve in my life. Adding friends is of no consequence these days as that list was maxed out years ago.
    Is Matt everyone's cup of tea? No, but I think some people need to use the latest graphene coating on their skin, it may offer a layer of protection that some need.

    I still like Matt, but he absolutely retails and provides customer service, and I don't like that he argues that he doesn't need to provide customer service when he sells a product to someone that doesn't work, or has issues. I have purchased from him and will purchase from him again, I think he is really good at curating, but the idea that he doesn't need to provide customer service to his retail customers is laughable! Matt, you are wrong! Still love my k1700 big time, and will buy a kranzle when it breaks. Also, my MAXSHINE polisher kicks ass! Says he is a man of value and then bashes maxshine is oxymoronic lol
