  • Knife making, how to make a knife from an old broken file. This is just me making a knife from a broken file.
I first annealed the file so it could be drilled and worked easier. Then I shaped the knife out of the file and hardened the knife in canola oil. The knife was tempered at 400 degrees for 2 one hour cycles. I sharpened the blade to 8000 grit then buffed out the flats with white buffing compound. The belts im using are surface conditioning belts and are great for knife making. I was going for a rough polished look with this.
The sheath was made from kydex. And has para-cord belt loops. Its pretty tough getting in and out but I think thats a good thing. I don't want the knife to come out while im wearing it.
    Thanks for watching😀
If you have any questions about knife making ask away but realize im just a beginner 😀 Thanks!

You know... back here in Ohio... we have a place called Sauder Village... in there, they have a glass blowing shop where these BEAUTIFUL pieces of art are being made daily, each piece of blown glass a piece of art into itself... could sit there for days watching these folks craft their art!!! You are like that for me in the knife crafting community!!! Each piece of art you produce just keeps on getting better and better... c'mon man, a broken file which 99% of us toss in the trash, you turn it into that!!!! 😮..... damn... that's all I gotta say!!!! 🤣

I'm even more of a beginner! I have an interest in restoring and using old hand tools, and your knife triggered a bunch of ideas...special use gouges, riffles, scrapers, draw blades, marking knives.
I've been dreaming that someday I would put together a brake-drum forge, and get my feet wet but your little forge could greatly jump me from fantasy to reality.
Carved refractory brick? Map? Would you share some details?
And by the way, both the knife and sheath, and the belt system are gorgeous! I can offer some tips on rawhide sheaths and guards if that is of any interest.
