this song is burned into my brain still to this day after almost 12 and a half years since i stated to play sim city 4, which to this day is still the best city builder out there
That's because the game actually notices what's going on and changes music accordingly and those feelings you talk about become strongly associated with each music in your subconscious.
Looking apon the vast Cities Skylines during sunrise with this music is just beautiful. Especially that part at 02:25 is just pure bliss. I listen to this while playing Cities Skylines, the young child, while great father Sim City 4 watches.
This one might be my favorite on the OST. I've always loved it! Its different and beautiful. Its mysterious and haunting, but also calm and relaxed. It definitely has a feel to it like floating around or flying. Its other worldly and also a chill Jazz. It's also very creative using slick drums and other rarer instruments. Like the sounds made are so alien, there's a violin or the wail sound I believe, maybe a steel guitar, and I believe even bag pipes!? Such a cool song amongst a fantastic OST! Absolutely GLORIOUS!
I don't know how maxis used to manage to find its composers but they're amazing. I've never heard a half-time shuffle incorporated into an ambient layered piece and this is simply amazing
@@isaiahdaniels5643 id say its more because of how when playing these games it feels a lot more productive than most, and thats just how the music burned into your head.
@@isaiahdaniels5643 Well ok let me explain. If you city is collapsing you will hear sad music, in most cases written in minor chord, a 7th or sis chord. Basically sad mood is created by dissonance and this is the reason why it sound sad. Dissonance comes from minor 5th and minor 3rd note. And you will notice that music will slow down in BPM. As your city progress you will notice that music will be much faster in BPM, drums will have crazy rythms etc. Usually happy or bright songs will be written in major scale. If you listen the Simpsons theme song, you will notice similarities with sims/SimCity soundtrack. This is because it uses the whole tone scale. Many movies and jazz songs use this scale. So basically lydian augmented scale sounds positive, magical, mysterious, jazzy... Ofc the most important part is what kind of instruments you use and so on. This is just scratching the surface and giving you something to investigate if you are interested in that kind of stuff. Google Scales and emotions and you should find interesting stuff.
Composers don't get the credit they deserve - they can really subliminally make or break a game to some people. This composer was a genius - anyone know the name of the composer?
I should hope you've found it by now but it's by two guys, Ken Marshall and Traz Damji, under the Humble Brothers alias. They did some work for other EA games as a duo around the same years of Sim City 4 but appear to have since gone their separate ways.
ReggarEli Yeah, the important part is that the entire game's soundtrack is led by Jerry Martin, even though multiple tracks were created by others. Martin himself made several tracks as well. I would love for Jerry Martin and his crew of people he got to compose with him to make music for Cities: Skylines or at least a game of some sort. He hasn't been able to do much lately, as far as I know.
Jerry Martin did every Maxis soundtrack between '96 and '04, so there's more where this came from. Look up SimCity 3000, SimCopter, Streets of SimCity, The Sims, and The Sims 2.
I don't know if it's only me but I noticed that this soundtrack captures the moments when you are listening to it and later when you hear it again even if it's years later you get certain feeling and memories...
Early 2000s were a simpler time. I think my fondest gaming memories are from 2004-2008. Some of the best games were released back then. Back when the idea was to create a good game that was innovative. Instead of treating video games as a product, they were treated as an art form.
Soo much detail in all Simcity 4 songs! I really love the effort and craft they put into this game. Definitely stands the test of time with great gameplay and music, I downloaded it on Steam a few weeks ago, and can re-experience that happy comfortable addiction I had as a teenager, building cities :P

Man, remember when you bought an EA game and actually thought you were going to have enjoyable experience. Those were the days... until they turned into an absolute shitty company

I right now I can picture all those advisors popping up and telling me I'm an idiot. Meanwhile people living in my city are happy.
