It really is one of the most underrated Genesis songs in that era and maybe even of all time. It's very powerful and more people need to hear it. So keep planting the seed. It pains me somewhat to say this but as I am a staunch fan of the "old' Genesis because I found that most of the later "new" Genesis was more Phil's band, (nothing wrong with that as I am a Phil fan but it was not MY Genesis I loved) Steve has not only revived the old fabulous Genesis but to a degree I would have never expected. I bought ALL LLLLL His double LP concert albums and have made it since to three of his concerts. Nad has a voice that matches and the rest of the band is extraordinary. To say the least. Yes, as Peter admitted in the 2007 reissue interviews, it wasn't a perfect democracy and those who were more 'bloody minded' tended to get their way more often, but the contributions of Mike and Tony should never be overlooked. Attending Ant Phillips' musical "Alice" in the 1980s in Leeds, I got to chat with Genesis manager Tony Smith. By that time the band was a trio and he said that if Phil or Mike didn't want something, it might still get done. But if Tony didn't want something, it didn't get done.

But I'd have a lot more respect for him if he wasn't such a diva and had even a little of Rick Wakeman's humor and self depreciation. The immense sound he got on stage with a mellotron, electric, piano, organ and Pro Solist was astounding. I'm just now listening to In That Quiet Earth from the '77 Zurich concert and reminded that the only time he came close to smiling during the concert was during that song, but his playing was masterful the whole night. What an absolute legend. Nice to hear an artist speaking freely, candidly and honestly about music in general. The unanswered question for me will always be what would Genesis have been like if he had stayed with the band and ran his solo career alongside as Phil and Mike did very successfully. If he'd stayed for two more albums would more of his ideas have been used and therefore would have secured his future with the band? We will never know. Good luck with Foxtrot at 50, looking forward to the show in Bath and listening to Can Utility and of course Supper's Ready.

I always hear new things in interviews like this! On the topic of Pete Gabriel & Atlantic Records, I'm pretty sure it was in the book Genesis-- Chapter & Verse (attention, Fact Checkers!) that Ahmet Ertegun said he was out of town when Pete's contract was cancelled & it was another Atlantic exec who did the deadly deed. By the time Ahmet was back in the office, Mercury had already signed up to issue PG 3 in the US.

@Randy A Well, I dunno. That doesn't match with what I've heard Hugh say in interviews. Seems to me that "Nigel" uses phasing (aka flanging) on the drums. Yes I have the 3rd PG album on LP as well. I did have the SACD, but I didn't hear an improvement. I sold that SACD for about 4X what I paid for it... ka-ching!

I don't agree with Phillips and would replace him with Howe. Wise After the Event is a gorgeous showcase of his talent, in my opinion. Zappa was a much more interesting guitarist in the 70s and his solos on Burnt Weeny Sandwich, especially Holiday in Berlin, are my favorites. He wasn't bogged down by all the effects he used in the 70s and 80s.His solos were more organic and connected with me on a much more emotional level. M any fans preferred the technical expertise he was known for later in his career. But for me there was more feeling in the flubbed notes he played than the 1000 notes per minute solos he played in the 80s.

Remember when Hackett released released his genesis revisited, it was met by sly remarks from Rutherford and Banks. Collins is finished. There is a logical way forward but there are other band members that are just too greedy to make it happen other than perhaps Gabriel!
