The parmo is definitely from Middlesbrough, not Newcastle. If you research it was created by an American who had a restaurant in Middlesbrough in the 50’s. If Newcastle have parmos it’s simply been rolled out there due to its closeness to Boro
Hi Danny, I’ve been living in NCL city centre for 30 years now, and a Parmo was never a thing at the takeaways until a few years ago. They’re gaining popularity, but have always been a Teeside dish traditionally.
Danny, we don't have that parmo in the States, at least here in the DC area. It looks like a round fully loaded calzone, Ginormous! That's enough to feed the whole family.
It's a chicken parmesan topped with bechamel and cheese. No bread involved (other than the breading on the chicken. They were "invented" in Middlesbrough. They can be made at home easily. Fillet a chicken breast and then hammer it even. Dip in egg then seasoned breadcrumbs and fry until golden. Make a beschamel sauce with whichever flavours you want to add. Pour the beschamel over the fried chicken, then cover with grated cheese. Finally bake it until the cheese is melted.

Here in the states for two at McDonalds it is about $25-30 U.S. dollars for a burger, fries and a drink and a lousy burger at that. Here you are getting a pizza which would be enough for two people, plus wings, a burger, fries, what looks like gyro meat slices, dip, I mean you can't beat that which in U.S. dollars is about $24.69 an outstanding value for all of that and on top of that it tastes good.
If any of you southerners need great food come to Middlesbrough and try the parmo best thing you lot will eat ohhhh just had one today was fricking gorgeous 😅😅
For me , it would be a turn off, but for the value you can't beat it. But that combination would give anyone a stomach ache. We do not have anything like this in the United States, as far as I am familiar with.
