  • Until I can get a hold of another board to review, I thought I would post a session vlog. Also, I'll be posting an update of some things to come. Lastly, I have my annual camping trip down south so I hope that produces some good content. Hope everyone is following this coming swell.
    See you in the water.

    You definitely deserve to be acknowledged by surfboard brands and throw some boards your way. Without your mashup review, I wouldnt have pulled the trigger on it. And thats saying a lot as I had to order it overseas and pay for a hefty sum on shipping cause it's not available locally.
    Ps. I watch a lot of board reviews but yours seem to stand out more as it comes out organically and much more relatable to an average surfer. Kinda feels like having a surfer dad on the web 😂

    Mashup is such a fun board a favourite of mine , I had the same feeling as you with the ibolic FRK, felt natural, great from the very first wave, you wouldnt think so but it's super forgiving, very very fast and super responsive, best performance board I've ever ridden hands down. FRK and Mashup is a great 2 board quiver for me highly recommend

    thank you for the video!. One thing you could do is buy and sell used boards. Buy it- review it and re-sell if for what you got it for. fin review is also cool to watch.

    Being on a tight budget is the story of my life but buying new has never been my approach. Secondhand and budget brands are often just as good as big brands, if you know what you are looking at.
    Here in Australia we have a few really cheap brands that are very popular. I'm not talking DHD or MR but Surfboard Warehouse, Global Surf Ind. and others. You can buy new quality boards for < U$280(AU$ 400). I would think your followers would get value from reviews of such boards and what to look for.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS 🤙

    Transitioning from a longboard and i some days i feel surfing a midlength is better for fast and dumpy east coast waves. Lol. Or maybe its just me. Awesome stuff. Thanks again.

      look to the Mashup for you want to pull a little more agility (performance) that your seaside might not be giving you. They are definitely different but both great boards.

    Thanks for the video. I'm a big fan of your channel. I'm considering the Mashup vs the Sharpeye Modern 2. How do they compare and which would be better for east coast low period beach break small waves?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před rokem

      although i don't think you can go wrong with either, I would say that the mashup has a higher performance ceiling. having said that though, my M2 is 5'6 and high 28L i think. Maybe even 29L. The Mashup is 5'4 and 27.1L. the size difference makes the Mashup a more playful board. the M2 was smoother from what I remember, it's been a while. Also, it groveled better since it was a tad bigger and the wide point was moved up. I'm not sure where I would stand on the M2 if I had ridden it smaller. maybe it has more performance than I know.
      But based on watching Noel on Surf N Show and Toldeo on the M2, I think the mashup just has a high performance ceiling for guys like them. For me, speed goes to Mashup while smooth turns go to M2.

    I do exactly the same, may be more unnecessary movements of my arms which i am working on but what I am having trouble with, is to stay in the pocket on my front side. I get the first pump but I seem to always run away from the foam and I can't figure out how to stay in the curl, if I cut back i stay behind, if I pump I get ahead so only cut backs are possible. What do you suggest to be able to do those top turns/re-entry right at the pocket? Thanks

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před rokem +1

      sound like the tempo of your wave is just a tad slow. The extensions I mentioned in this video I tend to use when I seem to be too far back on the face. If you watch some of the other videos, you'll notice that I don't do the extension on many of the other waves that are more sloped. On those, you'll see me stay low and semi squatted. Then, I'll delay my bottom turn and come up to the top to do a top turn. A top turn is a stalling maneuver. Here are some examples of where I don't do the extension right away:
      0:35
      1:40
      4:56
      with all three of these waves, you will notice I don't do the extension because they are too sloped. If I did, I would outrun them and have to do a cutback. So, I choose to stall my bottom turn. I stay low and semi crouched. then I try and extend off the bottom. Hope that helps. Try it, next time you are out, pop up and stay crouched. then go straight to the bottom or at a very low angle, wait by saying to yourself "one Mississippi" then do the bottom turn where the slope and the flat water meet. Hope that is making sense. haha

    Stuck between copping a 5’6 x 30L mashup or 5’5 28.7L
    Any insight? I usually ride 29L

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 10 měsíci

      are your usual boards PU or Helium? Also, what is the normal length of what you ride.

    • @Dill_doh
      @Dill_doh Před 10 měsíci

      @@ThomyeSurfsI ride a 5’7 dominator, religiously at 29L. However it’s probably close to the end of its life 😢

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@Dill_doh so, if you are set on getting a mashup, I'd do the 5'5 at 28.7L. reason being, it is 2" shorter than the dom which means that 28.7L will be more centered on your body. basically the same amount if not a tad more volume under your chest for paddling and feet for surfing. I'm talking tiny but getting a 30L Mashup would be like getting a 5'8 dom. I rode the 5'8 dom mostly cuz I liked the length. of the rail. it was way too much volume but it just surfed better for me. my 5'4 mashup is only 27.1L but more of that foam seems to be in the same place. so for surfing, they feel similar. for paddling my old 5'8 dom was a tad better but not much. so I would go 5'5 for sure.

      @Dill_doh Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@ThomyeSurfsthank you.. when I went to the shop and put it under arm the 5’5 did feel money but was afraid of under voluming.

      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@Dill_doh that .3 wont' be noticeable at all. and like I was saying, just having it crammed into a shorter board will make it seem like more volume that the equivalent dom.
