    Love watching your always plentiful hauls lol, you are going to need another bookshelf, STAT. So many books on this list that I hadn't heard of - totally agree, you should read Anne Frank, I didn't read it until my senior year of college and I'm pretty glad that I waited, I think I had so much more context for it and got much more out of it.

    • @GettingHyggeWithIt
      @GettingHyggeWithIt  Před 6 lety

      Yes I know!! Ha ha! It's in the plan. I will definitely be reading Anne Frank and maybe you're right that reading it later in life is a good thing because you have perspective and more context.

    Loved your long video! It's a pleasure to see and hear about these books. I've read excerpts but also have never read Anne Frank's diary. I was a voracious reader from early on but the diary seems to be thought of as reading for girls; I don't think boys are encouraged to it though it's very worthwhile reading. I read an article by a woman who knew Anne's father Otto and learned that though he had the diary published he didn't like it or at least didn't like some of it. Later, more complete editions reveal such things as Anne's unfavorable opinion about her parents' marriage and her increasing knowledge of her body and sexuality. Mr. Frank said, "It's like I never knew her", which I suspect is a common reaction when someone reads someone else's diary.---I think it was in a book about Victoria's daughter that I read of an incident in which someone asked Queen Victoria about whether Prince Albert would be displeased about something Victoria did or said or was going to do or say. Victoria replied, "Albert is in my house not I in his".---Also wanted to ask you, April: What do you---and also your viewers--- think about historical fiction that deliberately makes changes in real-life history for the sake of the story? I once started to read an historical fiction novel that had an author's introduction in which she wrote about taking liberties with history for dramatic effect. I didn't bother to read further. I know that fiction is fiction but when real people, places, events and eras are involved I want things to be as accurate as possible even when some of the characters may not have ever existed.

    • @GettingHyggeWithIt
      @GettingHyggeWithIt  Před 6 lety

      Hrmmmm that's a good question. I don't mind if the author plays with their imagination with things about real life people if it's something like - how that person would be feeling because there's no real way of historians to know that (Except maybe diaries?). But I know what you mean - with real life events? Don't mess with that stuff.

    Loved this video! Historical Fiction is my FAVE as well. I've read several of these books(Memoirs of a Geisha, Secret Life of Bees, The Women in the Castle) and enjoyed them all -- plus, I've got 3 others (Five Quarters of the Orange, The Piano Teacher, Victoria) on my TBR! Yes, someday do pick up The Diary of Anne Frank. It's a must read for fans of the WWII era - of which I am one!! Really interested to hear how you like The Room on Rue Amelie.... should I reserve it at the library???? :-)

    • @GettingHyggeWithIt
      @GettingHyggeWithIt  Před 6 lety

      I will definitely pick up Diary of Anne Frank. I feel like I must! I say give The Room on Rue Amelie a whirl! It's being compared to The Nightingale!

    I haven’t seen a historical fiction haul in ages so it was so exciting to see this!!! This was a super fun and exciting video as I really want to get more historical fiction recommendations for this year so this literally came into my life at the right time. So thank you so much for this video 😊!! Victoria by Daisy Goodwin looks really good. In the UK we have recently had a BBC series on Victoria and it’s made me really want to get to know her story better 😊. The shoemakers wife looks super interesting and the cover is stunning😍!!! I am such a sucker for beautiful books like most book nerds 🤓. A fabulous book haul from a fabulous lady so well done 👍🏼😊📚!!

    April, I love your videos. It feels like you are just sitting down chatting with a friend and I love your excitement about books!
    I read Anne Frank’s diary in 6th grade and that’s what made me want to learn more about World War II. It probably lead to my love for historical fiction. I also laughed because I read my fair share of Babysitter’s club and Goosebumps books in my youth!

    I loved Memoirs! The Secret Life of Bees and The Piano Teacher were great reads as well. I couldn't believe when I saw you had Five Quarters of the Orange. I just added that to my wishlist this past week. I was looking over my 2017 reads and had really enjoyed Gentlemen and Players, so was checking the backlist for Joanne Harris and that one stuck out to me. Can't wait to see what you think of it!

    • @GettingHyggeWithIt
      @GettingHyggeWithIt  Před 6 lety

      So glad you liked The Piano Teacher - I've not heard anything about that one before but the story sounded so fascinating. Not sure when I'm going to get to Five Quarters yet but it sounds great!!

  • @thescrappyappleyard3497

    Loved your haul! And yes, you are such a delight to watch. You can see your evident love of books! You must 'listen' to the Secret Life of Bees. Oh my goodness, even my husband got into the story (the only one he's listened to with me). The narrator just makes it come to life with her accent. Thanks for sharing. I didn't really care for The Twelve Tribes of Hattie. OH...and I to haven't read The Diary of Anne Frank....and I'm 55, if that makes you feel any better! :)

    Yay the Shoemaker's Wife! I can't wait to see what you think about it!
    Ooh, I've never heard of the Stars book by her.
    I love the Lady and the Unicorn!! Tracy Chevalier is so great!! It is about the story of the tapestry on the cover. Who made it, why, how, etc. She did the same thing in her book Girl with the Pearl Earring, about the painting of the same name.
    The Tenth Gift sounds great! Going in my Want to Read on Goodreads. 😀
    I'm so excited to see how you feel about all these books, they look so good! A few are on my Want to Read as well. 😀 There are two in your haul I have already read.

    The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank was not assigned reading for me in high school, so I never read it as a kid, either. I finally managed to get to in 2014. It is both beautiful and tragic. I would recommend reading it, but only when you're ready for more heartache.

    Yeah memoirs of a geisha is really bad....the author claims to have done all this research but his work is so inaccurate and the woman he wrote the books about is furious with the book and the author himself. I know it's supposed to be fiction but idk if the person he wrote the book about hates it to me it seems that it shouldn't be as popular as it is
