My name is Ashley. It became almost exclusively a girls name in 1994. I was born in 1990. It was a top ranked girl name from the 80s into the 90s. It ran for around a decade in rank 2, 3 and 4 on the popular girl names list. Kind of funny. That must have been what pushed it out of masculine ranking. What's also funny is that I wasn't named due to the popularity. I was named after my grandfather. 😅

Names being gender related also depend on area (of country, or different countries) and spellings. I knew a make and a female Dana when I lived in NJ. Male Shannon in my class in NJ, and when I moved to AL, I learned it to be a female's name there. I knew a Kellie, female, and Kellley, male, that lived next door to each other. When I taught in KY, I had a male Leslie in one class; a family name. In some countries, Karol, or Carroll, is a male name, but in the US is often a female name but spelled Carol.

I have an uncle named Dana. So, I grew up thinking it was a boy name, I was pretty surprised when I learned Dana was considered a girl's name.
Evelyn was a boy's name for a while. I checked the US social security information page on baby names, and it ranked within the top 1000 in 1930.
(It was funny, it ranked in the top 1000 in 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1910, and then jumps to 1930. Although, to be fair, it only just barely ranked within the top 1000 in 1930. It was the 961st most popular boy name for that year.)

Naming a boy “Michelle” with that spelling is such an American thing to do lol (I’m American but know a little French). The “-le” suffix is pretty much exclusively feminine in French afaik (which is where Michelle comes from) and “Michel” is the masculine version of that name with the exact same pronunciation, something that someone who names their kid in another language they’re completely unfamiliar with would not realize lol. Similarly, we got a lot of girls here named René, which is the French masculine spelling, instead of Reneé (notice the pattern of e=feminine?). Anyway thanks for coming to my Ted talk on French naming conventions no one asked for lmao

My name is Bonnie. When I found out that it was used for males, I was flabberghasted. I know a lot of common female names were used for males first, but some just make me wonder what they were from and meant in different places and cultures. Honestly, I wish people were more accepting of peoples names. They didnt choose it, chances are they have meaning, tradition, blessings, and love behind them. I was made fun of as a child for my name and it isnt even a "weird" one. In the U.S. people are so closed off and insecure. In other places, it doesn't happen like it does here. It just is their name and it is accepted.

I have an uncle Kelly that's in his 50s and somewhere around 2004 i had a male teacher whose first name was Lauren. Obviously most of us know of Dana Carvey, the comedian/actor. Then Leslie Nielson, the actor from airplane, naked gun, scary movie and all those cult comedy movies. I didn't know Beverly or Paris were ever boy names though, interesting!

The first Kelly I met was a guy, and I had no clue back then it was also a masculine name (and also a last name of course). I grew up thinking Kelly was a girl name. That being said, I’m a French speaker, so Kelly wasn’t a name I was used to except for books and TV show. Ironically, by the time I met a woman named Kelly, I had met 2 guys already.
Where I reside, you don’t really see much men named McKenzie, so at first, I thought it was primarily a girl name.

High heels were originally made for men to be taller too 😂 we mixed up everything in modern day but thank god because attributing a color and things like skirts is so funny since men also wore skirts. We should attach so much less to gender fashion

I mean, to me Paris is a pretty androgynous name considering its the namesake of not only Paris Hilton but also a Trojan prince in the Iliad. Its curious to me that he also went by Alexander but Paris is the name that appears feminine now lol

I have a male cousin named Leslie. He is in his 40s.
My neighbors husbands middle name is Laverne. He is in his 70s.
    It’s weird.
    My uncles name was Kelly.
If he was alive he would be in his 90s.
Also had an uncle named Fern. He would also be in his 90s if still here.
He had a brother named Fate. Just think that’s a strange name to have.
I thought long and hard when I named my sons. They are in their 30s. They have men’s names!!
The last few years I am hearing girls with their names. 😱
    Absolutely crazy!!

In Western patriarchal societies, the drift is exclusively male to female, and never the reverse.
I live in a rural area where the drift is happening more slowly. I know men named Dana, Beverley, Carol, Jackie, Sandy, Leslie, and Ashley.
