- The Gateway Motorsports Park nets caught a '69 Chevelle. E3 Spark Plugs Pro Mod driver Mike Bowman's parachutes failed and ended up tangled in the nets. Mike exited the car under his own power.

I don’t think auto zone is gonna warranty those brake pads and rotors
lol
Sadly, they would.
Yeah povertyzone will warranty anything no questions asked in my experience
@Big Rock I could get a good look at a t-bone by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take my butchers word on it.

@@roundearthshill248 I just compared it to the Texas Motorplex drag strip where I grew up, by using screen shots from Google Maps satellite views. I know the Motorplex is a 1/2mi run off before the sand trap. Best I can tell, it looks like the Gateway Motorsports strip has closer to a 3/8mi. Plus, the GMP sand trap is shorter than the Motorplex trap, and ends before the the Motorplex even begins.

What's really distressing about the net catch is the car being launched as the lower end of the net pivots. I'd rather see all 4 net attaching points have a reel that decelerates the car evenly. ..........................I wonder what Tim McAmis would have to say about the net. Announcer is a legend. “Brakes are glowing the the surface of the sun!”
I didn't know the parachute did so much of the stopping i thought it's just extra help
if ever watched motor racing, in front of every turn you will observe biker stand up in its seat at moment of braking. you cannot believe how that much of additional drag of bikers body help in slowing down the motorcycle. so figure why sky jumpers do not jump the plane without parachute...
Those cars are going well over 150 mph try stopping you can from 150+ mph and you will have the same thing happen if you try to stop that quickly in a short distance.
I know this comments old, but another fun fact is to get those shoots to deploy properly you have to be under acceleration. So you have to floor it to stop. Just like how you have to go right to go left and if you're not first you're last. You know just race car stuff.
even on a race track, the cars don't go from 150 to a complete stop
Aerodynamic drag is proportional to the the square of the velocity. In other words, the drag coefficient doesn't increase at a one to one rate with the speed of the object (or parachute in this case), it increases exponentially. Chutes at 150mph will have a much, much greater effect than what most people think it would, and in comparison, would have virtually no effect at 50mph.

Yeah technology has really advanced. Back in my day it was three guys standing at the end of the track holding wads of bubble wrap.
Of course the parachute hadn't been invented yet, so the driver would throw a pterodactyl out the rear car window which was trained to pull on a steel cable to slow the car down.

@@Jeremy.Bearemy well unfortunately you've never driven drag bikes because in 1947 when I was qualifying for the transnational Atlantic funny bike tournament, the only safety equipment that they issued us was a chimpanzee with ice picks on the back of the bike who would, after crossing the line, Jam the ice picks through the spokes to lock the rear tires....
Be glad you had four wheels.
I always wondered just how effective the chutes were on drag cars. Apparently pretty effective.
The commentator’s “Hey that guy’s chute isn’t opening” schtick also failed to deploy on time.

Did it though? It was almost like hitting a wall stopping like that. I'd rather take the tyres after it.
rowgli it’s not like a wall, instead of stopping in an instant, energy was absorbed and the car stop far more gradually than a wall.
goomba1982 They use crash nets on aircraft carriers to catch jets, they work really well.
Those wires at carriers have a mechanism that let the wire "stretch" with a steady resistance.
@goomba1982 I’m pretty sure he would’ve been worse off hitting tires and barrels like u described lol
Luckily it wasn't top fuel.. would've shot through that net at 300mph+

And would have put a hole through a mountain
Pro mods are still hitting 250+....

I have bigger brakes on my bicycle.
The things they have on those cars is ridiculous ,seen the speed they usually go.
At least they could use a second parachute ,just in case,it's not heavy.
michaelovitch It’s actually not the brakes but rather the tires not being large enough to stop something that fast and that heavy. Have you seen the front tires on those things? They’re like half the size of a Prius tire. Basically bicycle tires. No matter how large the front brakes are they can’t do anything about the small surface area the front tires have. You can see the tires up in smoke because they locked up. It’s not about the brake it’s more about the tires.
brakes glowing = heat
unless you have carbon discs brakes working correctly at those temps you see here, the brakes on this car were largely overwhelmed by the work.
Brakes are too small for this speed and mass.
They are designed to work with a parachute, doing most of the job first.
tires were big enough ,otherwise the brakes would have locked up as soon as he pressed the pedal.
Mass transfer on the front was good enough.
@@michaelovitch Bigger brake pads don't solve the problem of a car going 250mph+ and then having to stop in less then a 1/2 mile....I bet you could throw Peterbilt truck rotors on that fucker and they would still be glowing from trying to lock up.
Pads and discs of a freight truck would do it.
Their mass is way bigger, and can dissipate that much heat easily, like their friction contact area.
They were glowing and not stopping that car here, simply because pasds, discs are way too small to have small lighweight parts.
@@michaelovitch I just stated they would probably be glowing yellow too, 250mph is a lot of kinetic energy to have to dissipate quickly, that energy has to go somewhere, especially in the form of heat on the rotors, I agree, commercial truck rotors would maybe stop it in time.
That was scary for everyone in the stands my husband and I was there and everyone was praying for his safety

@@suleiman3811 It's not as bad as the video makes it look (Top Fuel runs there), but it is on the shorter side, hence the nets, water containers, etc. They would basically have to build a bridge to lengthen it, or reroute a creek. There is a road and creek/ditch right at the end.

1:15 Sir, can You give me the weather report from up there !? 🤔😂 funny commentator !!
Once the rotors get to those temps your not stopping no matter how hard ur foot is on pedal, like metal on metal. It certainly pays to not go cheap on brake components..
Sean Nugent- metal on metal would actually be better. Once you get “brake fade” the gases actually build between the pad and rotor causing very very little to no contact at all. Very scary on a road course
they use carbon brakes. the hotter they get the better they work, just not enough runway to stop
Do you not notice how skinny the front tires are? It could have the best pads and rotors and calipers money can buy and it wouldnt matter much cause those front tires dont have much contact patch on the road.
csr801996 Plus, at those speeds no brakes are going to stop the car in a hurry.
