      Having met Oliver Sacks in real life, I was all the more impressed by Robin's performance in Awakenings.
      Here Robin says there would be all kinds of people in Oliver Sacks audience: when I met him, he had been at Patrick Stewart's birthday party a week or so before!

    Reeve went through inner anguish in the ICU, particularly when he was alone during the night. His approaching operation to reattach his skull to his spine (June 1995) was frightening to contemplate, for he knew that he had only a fifty-fifty chance of surviving the surgery.
    Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. The man announced that he was a proctologist and was going to perform a rectal exam on Reeve.
    It was Robin Williams, reprising his character from the film Nine Months. Reeve wrote: "For the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay."

Who can fill such a void of humor? The shoe just isnt gonna fit anyone no more than the cape does from Christopher Reeve. Rest in peace to two awesome talents.

      The humour was a front. Behind every clown there is ALWAYS a deep, sensitive, and caring individual. Don't get me wrong, being funny is a talent, but it's often seen as an empty or one dimensional one, which is phenomenally unfair. Most comedians make amazing character actors, becasue they are expert observers of the human condition. Sadly, most don't get to realise it due to typecasting. He was a great friend to Chris Reeve.

I can not begin to understand how anyone would dare to put a limit or label on another human being, especially someone so obviously extraordinary as Robin William. His suicide COULD call you to draw any conclusion - such as compassion or regret or grief - but instead you choose to dismissively sum up this tragedy as "stupid". Do you know anything about pain, suffering, loneliness. I hope for your sake that you are very young; that could be your only excuse. Children very rarely inherit a neurological abnormality the exact form of a parent. If a down syndrome adult had children, they'd pass on the chromosome number and affect birth, perhaps, but the nerve injury is NOT determined by the chromosomes, and is NOT gene-directed! I hope we can find nerve tissue transplants and therapy to maintain nerve functions. Perhaps it won't be 100%. Perhaps 60, 70,80% of Nerve function returned with medicine and lead somewhat normal life.

    Sigh...I have all respect for Chris Reeve, but I hate when they use hackneyed phrases like "a real life Superman" or marvel at his "courage". I've known a paraplegic for years and sometimes for a laugh, I'll tell him how much I admire his "courage"...I'll say: "You have so much COURAGE, John...so many people in your position would kill themselves". He finds it funny...sometimes I would pretend to abuse him in public while he would flail his arms and pretend to cry.

    • @zuzuspetals9281
      @zuzuspetals9281 Před 3 měsíci

      There's a big difference between a paraplegic and quadriplegic, and a quad and one who is totally dependent on a ventilator like Chris Reeve was. Your friend as a para had the use of his arms for transfers, to drive, to feed himself, get a drink of water, blow his own nose, help dress himself, toilet himself. He had the ability to breathe on his own, to roll over, and do many more skills than someone who is a quad. Just being able to breathe alone reduces anxiety in a huge way, and being able to do much of your own care takes the burden off of others.
      People do say to quads that they "have courage" because they are thinking of how thankful they're not in the situation of having to live life in a chair, or figure out how to adapt to life dependent on others. My mom was injured 7 years after Chris Reeve and although she wasn't dependent on a vent, she told me that her body felt like it was encased in concrete and she hated it. She said she wished she'd died when she'd fallen. But she didn't, she lived 14 more years in a chair, dependent on others to pick her nose, brush her teeth, get poop out of her butt for her each day, turn her over so she didn't get bed sores, feed her, pull her blanket up and down. She frequently said she wanted to die, but also was afraid to be alone because something may happen that could kill her.
      It takes great individual courage to have a debilitating medical condition and to keep moving forward with life each day. Never discount that.
