Really enjoyed this review Scott - your passion for PC is very evident.
I actually like this album better now than I did on release. There are some cracking songs on this album - for me, River So Wide and Lorenzo are my favourites. I actually enjoy Wear My Hat and Dance Into The Light more than what is suggested on some of the feedback.
Been blasting this in the car since your review and very happy to be reacquainted again 👍

Great review! . I remember having the CD for Dance into The Light as a gift from my uncle.
I've been hunting down everywhere for this and Both Sides on vinyl for a long time now, but to no avail. 😭

I was in Geneva in 1997… very energetic & joyful show indeed🙌🏽
Musically, Lorenzo is one of his best work… The beat of Just another story is repetitive on purpose and fits with the lyrics nicely… I my opinion, Love Police is one his worst songs ever 🤷🏻‍♂️… River and Times are very powerful … and the B-Sides were top notch (some better than a few tracks on the album)

I think with the Bod Dylan song he took a great lyric and made it melodic, upbeat, and groovy! Love it. Also I don't have a problem with Phil doing covers. It goes right back to Face Value. Cheers, Ian

You're right, this is actually similar to Can't Stop Loving You, that he made it his own song.

6:29 Yes, it sounds exactly like that. I think the inital demos/ideas were the Beatlesque/brit pop (big at the time) and then the Tarzan job came up (as you said these films take a few years in preparation) to push him into that world music direction and the album was a product of that time. (In my opinion)

I only recently started listening to Phil and just stumbled upon your channel. My favourite track from this album is actually “Another Time” from the B-side. You should totally review B-sides if you haven’t yet!

I just saw a testify-era interview where Phil says Tarzan (1999) did indeed take him 4 years. Great perspective you've put on this whole period!

It was weird on the DITTL tour to have a drummer other than Chester Thompson behind Phil. Ricky Lawson was a consummate professional, but I'm glad Chester was back on the next tour.

I've been looking forward to this! I love Dance Into the Light, my second favorite PC album behind Jacket...
Love Dance Into the Light, That's What You Said, Lorenzo, Love Police, It's In Your Eyes, Take Me Down, River So Wide, and No Matter Who
I'd cut Just Another Story, Wear My Hat, and Oughta Know By Now
I like the Bob Dylan cover but I'd leave it as a bonus track or something
And I love I Don't Wanna Go! Wish it was on the album!

2:18 The way he started the set was great. the band was already going for it from the beginning. Also, yeah, his book barely touched on this album. Good analysis of the record, Caribbean/Guitar pop. The mix works for me, though.

Great video! Revisiting the album, I went back to the years 99, 2000. Here is my ranking of this album:
    Love Police
    It's in Your Eyes
    That's What You Said
    The Same Moon
    River So Wide
    No Matter Who
    Dance into the Light
    Oughta Know by Now
    Take Me Down
    Lorenzo
    Just Another Story
    The Times They Are a-Changin'
And yes, I don't like "Wear My Hat" either!

I was watching the live and loose concert last night. All the tracks off the album that he played live are awesome. I do like this album. Has hi and low points. But hey what album by anyone doesn't. Keep up the good work. From one Scott to another. Happy new year from Wales.

You are right, people have moved on to Oasis, Nirvana, and boy/girl bands, which hindered this album greatly. From about 1992 till damn near 2010 the only airplay legacy acts got was if their songs were on a soundtrack to a blockbuster or a Disney movie.
    The other 3 aspects are:
Phil was getting serious backlash at the time for his divorce fax, the depressing and poor selling Both Sides, moving to Switzerland for incorrectly being called a "Tax exile", and from being overplayed in the 80s. So not even the label really promoted this album. I think I saw the Dance Into The Light video once on MuchMusic and a couple of times on radio, and heard Its In Your Eyes a couple times on the light rock station. That was about it.
Another problem is it still was done with the 80s production (or overproduction) style, less the gated reverb on the drums. So having Hugh Pagham was a major hindrance this time around. Phil should have got a different producer.
Lastly, I'm not sure what happened with this album (or Testify), but I always found it really has no teeth to it. It's like he was so focused on writing for Tarzan and Brother Bear that he never pushed himself outside of it, and as you said, it sounds like Disney music.
Having said that, I like the title track and The Same Moon, and It's In Your Eyes is I think one of his better songs. I would have pulled Wear My Hat and Just Another Story, both of those songs are just awful IMHO.

Solid review as always, Scott. I think we might be the same age and your references are like mine. But I do find Dance into the light too laidback and uninteresting. Maybe because of the production and the drums, as you point out?

The 2 songs I would remove from this album are Oughta Know by now and Just another Story...easily..without a Doubt! I like Wear my hat is a fun song and a good concert song.

I did ask Phil about the cross over between DITL and Tarzan on the old forum.
Like you, I agree there does sound like there is a cross over between the two.
He dismissed it. If I recall he stated that it was a separate project.
DITL is his weakest album in my view (excluding going back). We have a happy Phil at this stage and this comes across but as a result looses something
The no drum machine comment came from the old forum again when people kept asked him to drum more.
The tour was the best live show I have ever seen. It was utterly superb (shame we do not have an official release) not least because it has a great combination of fan favourites with the new stuff.

  • @subwaygaragemusic
    @subwaygaragemusic Před 5 měsíci +1

I shouldn't have like this album that much, but apart from FV and Both Sides I like this album a lot. It's a shame too that Phil peters (not a pun) out of doing the album entirely live because I feel like some of the "realistic" instruments on the album still borders on that synthetic uncanny valley. I think a lot of the guitar sounds we heard esp. on The Same Moon (same guitar sound as Can't Turn Back the Years) or It's In Your Eyes were kept straight out of Phil's demos, and the bagpipes on Times They Are a Changing is the same sound we heard on We Wait and We Wonder. If he actually did what Harry Kim alluded to on your interview the album woulda have that *Please Please Me* or *Get Back* feel - just imagine Phil doing something similar to the Rooftop Concert for this album. It would be awesome.
Despite what a lot of people think I really like what Phil does for this album. I like the diversity he puts into this one - I don't think But Seriously is even this diverse in terms of styles and genres and it's sad that Phil didn't actually revisit and toy this idea of making an album with diverse genres again after Testify or Going Back, because I actually find myself enjoying a lot of songs on this album - it's a nice change of pace after hearing the moody stuff on Both Sides. And despite some instruments sounding synthetic I could look across it because the songs are genuinely good. Personally I'm not really warmed to the African songs (I think I like Lorenzo the best out of the bunch because it has that dark sound to it) but I like the guitar songs a lot especially Love Police and No Matter Who - the latter because I think I discussed it on your previous videos that it sounds like an Eagles song e.g. "The Best of My Love" and I like music with that sort of American country folk/pop sound so it grabs my attention very easily. I also enjoy the title track, The Same Moon and the Bob Dylan cover. I think the only song that I'm not really a fan of is Wear My Hat - too corny for my taste. If he took out that song, rearrange the track listing and put the B-side It's Over at the end of the album (fitting as a closer too) then I think the album's gonna be a bit better.
All in all it's not Phil's greatest (that title goes to FV, Both Sides and But Seriously) but I like the experimentation and diversity that's going on.

  • @user-cv5cp3qf1d
    @user-cv5cp3qf1d Před 5 měsíci +1

I agree with you ref Wear my hat. It sounds like it is a poor relation to something on Paul Simon’s Graceland (which I love) but rather self indulgent lyrics.
Phil went onto to play this on following tours (albeit it with a fun element with the hats) but essentially the lyrics are .. woe is me cause I’m famous. Musically ok .. lyrically awful.
In terms of best tracks … river so wide, take me down, the Dylan cover (which I love) I also love ‘it’s over’ … which was a b-side at the time.

So about Dance Into The Light…
Well, first of all, it was the second cd of PC that I bought on the day it came out (the first one was Both Sides). When I got home and put it in my player I was a little bit dissapointed. Oke, I liked the fact that it was more upbeat and ‘rocky’ that Both Sides, but I didn’t (and still don’t) like the overall-sound of it. It is too dry and most of the songs have a real wall of sound; there is not much air to breath. Exceptions are Just Another Story and Oughta Know By Now. And then there are so many backing vocals (overdubs) which I think don’t do the songs well. And the thing you mentionned in your video: the album is too long; too many songs on it. I’d like to have it just 9 songs:
    Dance into the Light
    Lorenzo
    Just Another Story
    Love Police
    Oughta Know By Now
    Take Me Down
    The Same Moon
    River So Wide
    The Times They Are A-Changin’
Anyway, for me it is not a particulary good PC album. But… I saw him in 1998 with the The Trip Into the Dance Tour and that was great!
NB. Your commentary about the drum sound: I totally agree as a drummer. This one is also too dry, too little reverb, especially on the snare.

  • @Original_Lurke_fromthe_Unknown

Okay good. I’m enjoying that you Scott enjoy the deep cuts on this album. We’ll let me tell you something I enjoy the whole album however those deep-cuts or “album tracks” is where it is “”GOLD.”” They are among Phil’s best work in my opinion. If I were in charge of radio back in the day I’d tell my staff to play some of those deep cuts. Especially “Love Police”, That’s what you said, Just another story. These songs are Golden property among his best. But then again I always enjoy hearing Phil solo or Genesis. There’s just so much to say about this album. And that tour I tell you what best show I ever saw. And above EVERYTHING ELSE it was OPENING NIGHT OF THE TOUR mind you!! That was mind blowing for sure. Live and loose in Paris is not the full show. Unfortunately Phil friend just recently passed Ronnie C. That’s it from me. Your pal Bill

This album is definitively underated! Alot of people think of this album because of its title track but sobmuch more than that. Just Another Story, No Matter Who, Same Moon, Oughta to know by now, River wide, and the beautiful Lorenzo are super great tracks. Some he did Livr where super fun to listen too! My least favourite arr Thats what you said... Dont like it and him not a Bob Dylan fan sobI dont like his cover- the last track.

Hey Scott. Great video as ever. Sadly I had given up on Phil by this point I am ashamed to admit and felt the music I really enjoyed by him was sadly no longer. That being said, I wouldn’t slag him off as such and admire anyone who continues to fly the Collins flag like you do. Keep up the great work on the channel as it is something I look forward to watching each week. All the best Dave ✅✅

I really want to stand up for this album and say it's great, but no matter how I twist or turn the facts, I just can't. There are some great songs on it, but the album is just so UNEVEN. I absolutely LOVE the title track, probably one of my top 5 PC songs ever. I also love Lorenzo (particularly the live version), The Same Moon, and No Matter Who, and I have to admit I'm also a huge fan of his cover of The Times They Are A-changing.
But then there are some really bad songs on the album. That's What You Said is probably one of the worst things he ever put on record - sorry, I completely disagree with you on this one, the melody and instrumentation is boring, and the lyrics are horrible. Just Another Story and Oughta Know By Now are also not my taste.
Finally, there are a lot of middle-range songs, that are ok, but not great: I like Take Me Down and River So Wide, particularly live, but they are not exactly classics. Love Police actually has a really strong melody and a killer chorus, but the lyrics and the title are pretty naff. I must admit I think the live version of Wear My Hat is a blast, but I think the idea of the song itself is not cool - I get the idea of showing the absurdity of fame, but this one basically just says: "Hey, I think my fans are idiots he just want to bother me," which I think is not cool. It's In Your Eyes, for me, also is in the "ok" category, I definitely don't follow you on your big love for this tune, but it's not bad either.
I think it's worth mentioning that the album is really well-produced, and particularly the LP version sounds amazing to me. I personally love the drumsound and mix, and the mix is overall surprisingly dynamic for the time it came out. There were a couple of great B-sides which should have been included instead of some of the album tracks - I think the track called "Another Time" is one of the best from this session, and I love "It's Everywhere" to bits and would have included it over Wear My Hat any day.
Final comment: Thank you for using so much time talking about this tour, I agree 100 %, this was Phil at his very best, everything about this tour was AMAZING. If I could go back in time to one Phil Collins concert, the Live And Loose In Paris concert would be my choice. In fact, this is one of my favorite concerts of ANY artist (although there are a couple of Genesis concerts that would give it a hard contest). My number one treasure from the Phil Collins vaults has for years been a complete release of the Paris concert - a Bluray would be amazing, but even just an unedited audio version would be a holy grail for me.

Dance into the light was the slow start of losing interest in Phil's solo career for me, both sides began that, and wear my hat that's my who dunnit for his solo career. Oh and yes I like who dunnit but wear my hat not so much

Debbie .. I agree but Both Sides I went back too and it was a much stronger album than I have credit too at the time. Post a personal divorce it made a lot more sense to me than when it first came out.
      Worth revisiting.
