- What a tragedy of love the Korea War has made. A couple reunited after 35 years, a father and daughter, an older sister and younger brother. The so-called 'separated family'. It's been 70 years since the end of the Korean War, and most war experienced people are now older. It's a sad story of history that families have to live separated from each other in North and South Korea for the rest of their lives.

All due to Japan. It was Japan that created hostile environment, leading to building of different groups in North and South which eventually led to the partition. And saddest thing is Japan never admitted it's warcrimes

@@soheelee5255 clearly you haven't read about Japan's colonisation. Japan colonised unified Korea, then there were different groups, with different ideologies formed in the Northern and Southern part. These eventually led to the division.

@@soheelee5255 Korea would have been one country if Japan hadn’t annexed Korea, WWII started when Japan annexed Korea. It didn’t start is 1941. Just in US. It had been going for decades. Because part of Korea liberated by Russia and part by US and wanting a quick end to things at the end of the world Korea was split in 2. Japan’s fault.
The man who cried out that he finally got to see his nuna made my heart break.. Not even to mention the father who blames himself for "leaving his wife and two daughters behind".. Sir, you're the last person to blame in this tragedy. War is always horrible, but when it's with your own nation it's just a different level.

My tears kept running down my cheek. I feel so sorry for all these families that dont get to see each other. It's so frustrating that even after all these years they still dont get to see each other, or even send letters! To be seperated from your family not knowing if they are dead or alive must feel like hell. Such an unfair situation...
there are many groups in Korea and abroad who need help promoting reunification! the US refuses to let South Korea govern itself.

People getting killed, put in consentration camps, starving and generally living in a very strict communist country without any democracy + you can't leave without putting your life at risk? Imagine someone you love was on the other side of the boarder and being unable to have ANY sort of communication with them. Being apart from your family in the first place is terrible, but when you know they may be on the other side not being able to communicate with you..... they may not even be alive! It only took 20 seconds for me to start crying when the younger brother screamed out for his big sister. This is so heartbreaking, I can’t even begin to imagine what they went through and is still going through.

The fact that North and South Korea even exist, was primarily because the US didn't want the USSR to get credit for liberating the Korean Peninsula. The US jumped into the war at the last moment and rushed to liberate southern Korea as USSR troops were fighting back the Japanese in the North.
@@xx133 FR Korea could've been united under a single country today even though it's Communism, it will still be better than it splitting in half with heavy sanctions from the west. The war was ALMOST over until the US jumped in and dragged it longer.

@@xx133my uncle was based in South Korea in the late 60s and he always tells me the US shouldn’t have joined in. He always looks at his time there with such shame. I’m thankful in a way that he gets it, a lot of vets who went with him thinks differently.
My grandmother lost her husband to the war ,when she was only 17 teen. She never remarried and waited to be reunited with her love. Unfortunately, it never happened as she passed away. Seeing this hits me right in the heart.
This is unrelated but you know these stories of people waiting for their husbands and wives for multiple decades is more sweet than bitter for me. Imagine being that committed to a person that their memories and longing for them is much stronger than the desire to feel loved. I'd imagine your grandma was also married for just a few months but till the end she was committed to her husband. It's kind of inspiring to commitment phobes out there (like me).

I sobbed through this entire thing. It's so unfair. So many families torn apart and they only get 12 hours a day for 3 days to see each other acter not being together for 65 years (now it has been 73 years as of 2023). Many of them dying before they get reunited. It's just simply unfair.
It's why human beings need to fight tyranny wherever it shows its head or we could be next

My paternal grandparents were from North Korea. Especially my grandma was the only one in her family who came down to the South. When I was a kid, they told me they wouldn't apply for the reunion because they were scared to deal with it. I couldn't understand them back then, but now I get them. They still watched the TV whenever this reunion was on the air. Now I'm in my 30s and my grandparents both passed away. I don't believe in religion, but I do wish they could reunite with their family in the afterlife.
Separation from loved ones is very painful, and you feel the pain more as you get old. Reuniting in after life would be the very Happiest result for them.

I’m in my 30’s too and both of my paternal and maternal grandparents were from North Korea. Both of my paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather had family in the North but remarried in South-which is one of the reason I exist
None of them got to see their family in the north during their lifetime. For people who don’t know, the families in this video who got to meet their family again through this program are extreme lucky ones as there were more separated families than the capacity that the two nations could handle. Only a small fraction of them could have such a brief reunion. So blatantly cruel.
Last of my grandparents passed away in early 2010’s. It’s so utterly and undoubtedly unfair that they had to be the victims of Cold War, which was the war between the superpowers that are on the other sides of globe. I pray to every Gods of humanity that both Koreas realize ideologies don’t mean nor worth a shit when innocent people have to be sacrificed for political conflict.
I get that time already had fled too much and now reunification of the two doesn’t seem realistic anymore, but I hope to see the two nations, and other involved parties(China, United States) at least agrees to sign the peace treaty during my life time. So the two nations open border to each other, trade and have cultural exchange, so that not only birds but also people can come and go freely, so that I can visit my grandparents’ hometown on behalf of them.
You can see how deep his heartbreak goes before seeing his daughters again. Especially when he learned that his first wife passed away soon after he had to stay in the South. Such a horrible thing the war created for so many people but also such a blessing he and many others are allowed to reunite with their loved ones after so many years.

I'm a bit annoyed at the camera's being shoved into their faces, especially at the moment "grandmother returns to being a shy 19-year-old bride" because I feel like with all the noise and flashing lights you can barely hear each other in such an important moment. I hope they got some quality time and space together even though it was limited
This is from 2015. Since 2018 there have been no reunions. According to the Korean Unification Ministry, about 133,650 people in South Korea have applied for reunions but nearly 70% of them have died (source NPR)
How cruel the US is to see this and not care. The US military has been the command at the border since they created it and requires documents from South and North Korea be cleared with them first. There are many reunification groups that have been trying to get the US to let the Korean governments handle this themselves.

@@jxy7096 North Korea has been on strict lockdowns sense 2020 due to Covid. So even if the US let the Korean governments handle it I don't think it would have made much of a difference. I wonder why the US is in charge of that though?
@@jxy7096This is completely and blatantly false propaganda. The U.S. does not “control” the border, the two Koreas do. Those reunion programs are strictly dictated by the North and South Korean governments. Even worse, the North uses these reunions as pawns for their own agenda to appeal for more aid.
The last time these reunions happened was because the North was temporarily “acting friendly” to receive more aid and easing of sanctions (President Moon and President Trump). After they got what they wanted, the North Korean government immediately fired missiles into the seas and closed all diplomatic talks once more.
It’ll happen again in a few years, when they need to beg for aid again. It’s like clockwork. 2002, 2008, 2012, 2018.
I feel selfish for even crying while watching this now. I can’t fathom the immense pain they have felt for 65 years of being separated from their loved ones. I hope that they will meet them some day. And to those that have passed I hope they will be reunited with them in the afterlife.

It's terrible what a war can do. My heart is just shattered. You hear their stories and learn they were teenagers when it happened. Now here they are, missing each other, thinking about the well-being of their relatives on the other side of the border. That shouldn't happen. I feel so much anger right now, and I'm not even one of the victims of the Korean War. I'm not even a Korean. It's just a real tragedy. I hope we can have a reunited Korea in the near future, and I hope that it would be a peaceful reunification. *sighs*

It's not the war's fault anymore, it's the governments of North Korea and South Korea, but mainly North Korea, who will snag any excuse to stop the reunions and disallow the families from communicating through mail after they learn each other's addresses.

I was given up for adoption 63 years ago. It took me 60 years to do my dna. And to find out that I had a mother still alive and 2 brothers. So this video is quite emotional for me as well. I am an American. I have served in the US army and I have served in Korea.

I’m watching this at 2 in the morning and am bawling my eyes out right now 😭. This is honestly a big eye opener, some people hating having siblings wanting to leave their families for dumb reasons and then you see these people clinging on to little pieces of hope to just look at their family 😢
It feel absolutely terrible to know that there are thousands if families and people who havent heard from their loved ones for years. They would be applying for the reunion in order to know if there is anyone left for them so that they can hold on to their hope. It breaks my heart. Even after meeting in the reunion, they wouldn't be able to meet them again in this life time is much worst than not knowing about their existence. I cannot even imagine their pain. I wish i could hug each one of them!!!

They need this suffering to blame it on DPRK when the US military records are all available to see they committed mass scorched earth and created the ROK to prevent communication. What's so sad is that it's quite possible for soldiers to fight their own relatives in War. Brothers and sisters separated from each other, having their children and grandchildren potentially face off on the battlefield. 🥺

I lived in S Korea- its very sad. A driver told me he was a little boy of 5 and his brother was 9 when they locked the gate. He and his parents were on the South side, his brother trapped on the North. In his 50s he still had no idea if his brother was alive. His parents agonized for decades
I am in tears right now. I cannot begin to imagine the pain, longing, and grief these families have endured for seven decades because of the war. And knowing so many more passed before ever having a reunion with their families like this, is so, so, so sad.

No matter age, your parents will always be your parents, at hard times even when ur 70, 80 you will think "i wish i could talk to mom,dad". Parents are a strong bond. (yes there are some bad parents out there but we dont count em in)
Watching this made me remember when my grandparents met after a long time. My grandfather was fighting near to the end of the civil war and got caught by nk soldiers, he was stuck with them when the country split and eventually became a nk citizen. He escaped nk when I was 8 years old, so 9 years ago and he was so emotional seeing my grandmother again. They both died 3 years ago, but it was a wonderful sight seeing them together again. (If you’re curious as to how my bloodline continued, my grandmother was pregnant with my grandfathers child during the civil war, so before he was sent to fight as he wasn’t sent at the beginning of the war).

@@verdiernoyama9681 he had no family but he had dated a woman for a few months roughly a year after the country divided as he was told his wife, my grandmother, had died and he believed it as he had no other evidence to go on. It wasn’t held against him according to my dad.

I purposely watched this twice. The first time without close captions because I wanted to see if I could understand their emotions, and I did. From their anger, happiness, hurt, sadness, and frustration, I recognized them without even knowing that's what they were feeling. And when I watched with the sub-titles on, I was spot on for the most part. How could a whole country be so heartless & cruel??!!! And then to say shyt like they "QUALIFY" for a reunion! WTF you mean QUALIFY?? That's not even a word someone should be using when it involves reuniting family members. This is insane and one of the reasons I'm happy to live in America!

My father grew up in west Germany. When the teacher asked his class if anyone thought that Germany would get reunited, he was the only on who raised his hand out of the 30 kids. A couple of years later the protest started and after a few more years the wall fell and east and west Germany got reunited.

I lived in Daegu, South Korea from 1981-1986 and I would see these reunions on TV. I didn't understand a word that was being said, but I knew exactly what was going on. It was so emotional for me then when I was still a kid and it's just as emotional for me now.

I'm only 30 seconds in and I'm bawling. Idk what it is but seeing elderly people cry especially elderly men just crying out gets me every times. Especially knowing that society in this generation and I'm sure even worse in their generation, shamed them into not showing emotion or their true feelings yet they're so overwhelmed with emotion that it comes tumbling out. This is so heartbreaking. To keep families and loved ones separated against their will, even for a short time, is cruel. For so many people to feel that pain for so long is unfathomable. Its unfortunate that "someday" for so many never came.

The things our elders and ancestors went through... being survivors/victims of genocide, permanent separation from families, immigration to unknown lands... and the lives many of us get to live today. I can't wrap my mind around how different our life experiences are.

As a german living close to where the border to the GDR once was, this made me think a lot about history of my own country and Korea. Part of the border was going right trough a village, also separating families. I feel so sorry for all these families, it's so heartbreaking to be forced apart.

I think the least they can do is inform living relatives of which family members are still alive and when others passed away. At least give them the right to mourn and have answers so they can at least live knowing what happened.!
I have never met these people before but their pain and joy strikes deep into my soul. This separation is the worst kind of inhumanity and the Red Cross is doing an incredible service to bring about these reunions

My father was drafted into the USA Army because of the Korean War. Luckily, he returned home safely. It makes me so sad and angry that it ended in a division of the country and that the North Korean government is so harsh and unreasonable. War is wrong and unjustifiable and the real victims carry the wounds until death. My heart goes out to them.

I'm not even halfway through and I had to pause. I'm a puddle. I'm grappling for the right words to express the deep sadness and frustration with how we humans create these bizarre situations that separate families like this. So close, and yet so far. I've been separated from a loved one through death for nine years and I find it hard to bear. I think it is probably even harder not knowing if they are alive or dead. Wow, just overwhelmed.
We humans can also put pressure on the US military to end their occupation and control of South Korea to unite all!

The way I'm ugly crying now cannot compare to the way I shed silent tears in front of the memorial at Imjingak Park on my DMZ tour this summer. It's such a painful reality that families have been torn apart in this way 💔 So many of them stand a very little chance of ever seeing their distant loved ones again.

I started crying the moment the elder man screamed he finally saw his older sister again.
Honestly, being the younger sibling myself, I couldn't handle it if I would never see my siblings again.
I feel so bad seeing them having struggled to be without their families for so long, not knowing if they're okay or not - and it's other people who are the reason for this happening to them.
No one deserves this, this pain is unbearable for even the toughest of us.
This had me crying my eyes out, why does this happen it’s just not fair that people are living and lived like this without loved ones how hard it must have been… i wish for things to change and families to be able to find each other freely maybe one day this will happen

My grand father escaped NK in his 20's leaving behind his entire family, wife and kids. He got remarried to my grand mother who is from the same village as my grand father. My grand father sometimes looked towards the North and he would became silent and often became depressed. After a few decades when N and S Korea planned for reunification events he applied so that he can maybe see his family in North but never got selected to be in the event. He eventually gave up. He passed away in 2007. As an older me, I think about what my grand father went through. I can't imagine the hardships and sorrows he went through. I am grateful for everything I have, my family, friends and most importantly, the freedom. Thank you to generations that fought to give us the freedom that we do not deserve. I am forever thankful.

That man’s anguished cry to his father as he looked toward NK - just opened the flood gates for me. All of them … so heart breaking! What is worse? Seeing your loved ones again even though for only two days, knowing you lose them again when they have to return - or never seeing them at all. There is a saying that says ‘It’s better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all’. Whichever way you look at it…. Its all utter heartache for these poor people.
We got to do our part and keep up the pressure for the US to stop controlling the Korean border!

Oh my gosh, I cried through the whole video. What am I talking about…I’m still crying. This was absolutely gut-wrenching. I never thought about the separation of North and South Korea too much until I watched this. I feel sooooo sorry for all the families that were torn apart. I’m glad the 98 year old man had the opportunity to see his daughters but I wish everyone could see their families. I don’t think I’ll be sleeping much tonight…at least not without nightmares. God bless each and everyone of these families.

The man at the end hollering for his mother made me cry. It should never be this way!!! Why in this day & age is it still this way? I feel embarrassed that my sister kept calling me but I didn’t want to talk at that moment. How pathetic that i take so many things for granted when these beautiful people have been waiting lifetimes to see their families. I pray they all get a reunion 💜

I can’t even explain how my heart breaks so much for these families. I can’t imagine the pain they are going through everyday, missing their loved ones, wondering if they are okay or still alive. 💔
I had to pause this so often to wipe away tears . So sad that there is no form of contact with family members. The quiet guilt they are bearing ....but they shouldn't. They had no idea their separations would last so long. Is it possible for them each to make a video and write a letter ...all to be held ( hopefully) by the Red Cross organisers in the hope that one day ... some family members may be able to at least see their respective relatives. God bless them all 🙏.
