  • DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLT!!! THE ACTUAL PROBLEM CAME DOWN TO THE KEY SIZE BEING A LITTLE SMALLER THAN IT SHOULD. Wahoo Kickr indoor bike trainer making noise ( creaking sound ) at the flywheel. In this video, i walk through a DIY (I'm not responsible for any damage that may occur to your unit, my intent is, i am making this video in hopes to help you eliminate the noise and show you where it's coming from and what to do to fix it)
This is the 2018 Model, Quite trainer. It's a brand new unit, i had only used it for 2 training sessions on Zwift, and it was making noise from the beginning (right after the initial calibration).

This is the most mellow and relaxed troubleshooting video I have ever seen. Do you do hours of yoga beforehand? Most people get distressed when expensive training equipment develops issues.

I can tell you what it was on mine and I am guessing it is the same for all as the sound is the same It is an under sized parallel drive shaft key that fits into the key way of the shaft for that small pulley, its a length of squared metal that fits into a square grove to stop the full from slipping around on the shaft and hold it tight but being to small it comes loose and clinks around the pulley itself was not loose. The key needs to be the right size so that you need to slightly force it into the square key way grove with something. Don't over tighten the bolt holding pulley wheel on

Thank you for the information. it's very helpful. i've been using the unit ever since this video with no issues yet.. i'm keeping things the way they are for now because it's working, but if anything is to arise again, i'll definitely take the information above into consideration. apparently they also have a repair kit (key, bolt, washer) supplied by Wahoo... i'll also look into that.

Great video! I bought Kickr Core 6 weeks ago and got the same noise after 400km. Wahoo support was helpful, but they offered only replacement. That's a pity giving a fackt how easy it is to fix that on your own. Now, I will probably have a week off the training plan which is the biggest problem for me. Hoep the new one will work perfectly.

This happened on my 2018 Kickr Core after about 20 hours of use. Wahoo sent me a new one and I'm in the process of sending my old one back. If I'm being honest, I'm not too happy with how they handled things. I mean, they did a good job but it's an annoying experience dealing with a defective product. Maybe give me something for the annoyance? And the local bike shop wasn't much help. They were like 'just call Wahoo'. I was like 'why didn't I just buy the unit directly from them then? You sell me a unit but are off the hook when an issue arises?'
Anyway, it's been about 10 hours now for the new unit and things are silent so far. Fingers crossed.

I took a chance on 1 and haven't had any problems yet, as it seems that this can happen at any time. What burns me is that the end consumer who's paid 1,000.- 1,200. For a out of the factory faulty product at any time, then is told here u can fix it yourself? And on their website there's no video how to fix their product? I sent Wahoo an email with my problem and the video with noise issue but they said it was fine. When I cycling on Wahoo kickr core I noticed turning drone noise after every interval turn from the drive belt wheel. They said it was fine but when I received the product it was not like that. This is sad that Wahoo starting to reject that their product is not live up to the consumer's expectation too many flaws which can't be ignored.

After 2 or 4weeks it became worse now not only i am having loud noise but the vibration is too much... i have sent wahoo a video of the issue on my wahoo2018, hoping to resolve it. I paid $1600aud and the product is just 6months old...

  • @williamcooper9753

No. When you over tighten that bolt you compress the spring washer between the flywheel and the outer bearing. The spring washer allows the shaft, and pulley, to float in the axial direction. Tighten it snug, with lock tight, till there is just a bit of axial back and forth. About 1-2 mm. A sloppy design by wahoo.

Funny stuff. The TWO Wahoo Kicker Core's I ordered were the one with the static electricity issue. Needless to say, I sent them both back... Thing is, I ordered them both AFTER Wahoo new about the problem. So instead of opening existing stock and replacing the old power units and updating the processor, they chose to send out two 'duds' and hope they didn't have issues. Terrible....

Your video is misleading, you should take it down.
The problem is nothing to do with the torque used to tighten the bolt, it is to do with a loose keyway. By tightening it up that much you will probably damage the unit longer term.
You just need to send Wahoo a video of it making the noise and they will send you a kit to repair it all and a gift voucher to compensate for the trouble, much better than producing a video demonstrating how to break your kickr because you didn’t research your problem properly.

A B That’s not the point. The point is that the video is encouraging people to do something that could well destroy their Kickr.
Like a lot of people on CZcams he should not provide advice unless he is sure he’s correct - not trying to knock the motive that’s clearly all good, just take more care to be sure the advice is correct and in this case it simply isn’t

As a auto technician working on many performance machines when would install flywheel we would put tread locker on the blots. I don't see why they wouldn't do the same for this flywheel bolt, obviously its coming lose from all that rotational force.

Romeo Fowler. That is a known manufacturing fault, common with the entire first batch. I returned mine for a refund, as IMO it’s not acceptable for the premium price of the unit. The problem is caused by the rudruff key assembly which was manufactured out of spec. You could return the unit under warranty, or i believe Wahoo might now be offering a repair kit. You need to contact Wahoo to get this sorted.

thank you for the question, Wahoo offers a kit to repair the kicker issue for free, they shipped the kit to Canada for free and the instructions were very similar to what you see in this video. Even though the kickr wasn't making any noise after the repair shown in the video (i used it for 30+ rides on zwift after that repair), I still applied the fix kickr offered just to stay on the safe side. To answer your question, in short, I measured the torque that was applied to open the bolt (using a torque wrench) then added about 3 ft-lbs
