      People come up with incredibly dumb excuses as to why the prequels aren't bad movies. "Everyone's just nostalgia blind, the OT sucks!" or "People only shit on the prequels cause it's the hipster thing to do, bandwagon bandwagon!" The truth is, 99% of the people who saw the prequels hate the prequels because they are attrocities of filmmaking. They're absolutely terrible. That's not to say you can't like or enjoy them, but on a fundamental level, those movies are terrible.
      The nostalgia excuse is especially stupid, because the people who love the prequels are usually the ones who watched them when they were kids. That's still no excuse, though. I saw the prequels when I was a kid, but I at least grew up and realized how bad they are.

    • @TheApostleofRock
      @TheApostleofRock Před 7 lety

      I think I'm rather in the middle. I watched the originals first when I was young and then wanted to see the prequels. They were ok at that time. Later I went back and watched them all and felt that the originals blew the prequels away in almost everyway. I absolutely refuse to watch 1 again, watching 2 takes a bit of courage. I say 3 wasn't the worse thing that ever happened. 4,5,6, and probably even 7 were better in my book
      tl:dr I feel 1 and 2 are objectively awful, 3 is ok, and then the originals are pretty fucking good. Second half of Rogue One is also incredible.

    I think it's better if you assume that Obi-Wan fell in love with Padmé but never did anything about it. Maybe Lucas could've thought about it and included it, which would've made Anakin's fall make more sense, having Anakin find out about Obi-Wan's feelings and incorrectly assume that Padmé cheated on him with Obi-Wan.
    The scene in Mustafar hints at that dropped subplot. "Liar! You're with him! You brought him here to kill me!" It would make it that much more tragic if Obi-Wan decides to take care of Luke because he feels guilty that his feelings are what brought about Anakin's fall and the downfall of the entire Jedi Order.
    Plus, does no one remember that Obi-Wan literally asks Padmé "Anakin is the father, isn't he?" when he sees Padmé pregnant?

      @JeoshuaCollins Před 7 lety +13

      As has been stated MANY times here, women are not attracted to younger boys they met when the male is a child. As a general rule, women are not attracted to much younger men (10+ years) until they are in their mid-30s. I believe that is mostly due to teenage boys being morons. Yes, I was a teenage boy, and, yes, I was a moron. I have teenage boys and they are morons.

      It's still difficult to fall in love with someone who you've known when they were a child unless you were also a child. Unless the time spent with the child was very brief and there were years of separation before meeting again and falling in love. I'm not saying women (or men) can't fall in love with people who are younger than them, but for the majority of those cases, both parties met as adults when they fell in love, never meeting as adult (or teen) and child. It's easy to imagine a child crushing on an adult though. Anakin falling in love with Padme is understandable, but Padme falling in love with Anakin is improbable.

  • @tankbusta5335
    @tankbusta5335 Před 7 lety +239

    Obi Wan was not in love with Padme. He just knew what was going on between her and Anakin but cared for both of them enough to not say a thing. What makes the prequels so amazing really is Anakin seeing that the Jedi are hypocrites, that in his eyes they are evil for creating a war and throwing away their values of peace and justice, when Anakin had to give up so much to follow the code of the Jedi, that the Jedi themselves don't need to follow. People think that Padme is the sole reason Anakin turned to the dark side, but it is only showing Anakins love for compassion and his will to only do good and seeing that power is necessary to do good. He already viewed the Jedi as hypocrites that feared him and his power, but what truly turned him against the Jedi is seeing that the Jedi were about to murder the one man that seemed to sympathize with Anakin and share his points of view. He believed everything he was doing was right, and he fought Obi wan because he feared that he, like the

    • @tankbusta5335

      Other Jedi feared him and that Obi wan came to assassinate him. He didn't truly see that what him and the emperor was doing was evil until the emperor was going to kill his only son for him showing mercy to Vader, which is what Anakin tried to show to Palpatine. He Anakin did the exact same thing to the emperor as what he did to mace Windu, he had to aggressively stop the slaughter of the helpless. Everyone who doesn't like the prequels for this reason that it seems like Anakin went from a helpless boy to an evil overlord should watch The Clone Wars, and see the true evolution of Anakin Skywalker. It talked about the romance of Anakin and Padme in only 2 episodes out of about a hundred

And the best one that explains his emotions, behaviour ect in ep. 3.

      When did the Jedi start a war? (They didn't) The separatist movement did, and the Republic defended itself. The Jedi accepted their duty to lead the troops, but if they hadn't, other people would have instead - people who didn't value peace so much. Anakin knew this, and the war's not why he left.
      I have yet to see or hear a single good argument for why the Jedi are hypocritical.

    • @broamamondaun3055
      @broamamondaun3055 Před 7 lety +10

      Couldn't you say that the Jedi were hypocritical ever since they've pledged their allegiance to the Republic? Jedi are supposed to be symbols of peace and guardians for all creatures of the galaxy. By supporting the Republic during the Clone Wars, the Jedi basically condemned the peaceful inhabitants of the Separatist planets. Not to mention that their acceptance to become generals of the army is completely against their ideals. Jedi are meant to be defenders, not aggressors. So with little to no military knowledge or experience why do they willingly become generals of the army? Sure they wanted to end the war but they had no authority in the matter; the army (and thus its generals) were under orders of the Republic Senate. By willingly accepting such positions, they prevent themselves from having any say in the results of the war.
      Not wanting to start a big argument, just my two cents.

    I've got my own fan theory that actually dovetails nicely with this one: Padme never legitimately fell in love with Anakin. He spent all of Ep 2 attempting to Jedi Mind Trick her into submission. Just watch the fireplace scene and assume that every time he squints, he's poking at her mind. Then extend that to the whole movie. *It works.* And it makes her out-of-nowhere and way too strident declaration of love in the Arena make so much more sense.
    Then, along with this vid, you've got yourself a legitimate love triangle going on that also mirrors the Light vs Dark themes of all the Star Wars movies, with the battleground being Padme's heart and soul.

    Yeah, this whole theory falls apart completely when Padme only started to have feelings for Anakin in Attack of the Clones, not the Phantom Menace. Literally the only reference to a Padme/Anakin pairing in Phantom Menace is that Anakin sees Padme as beautiful, guessing from the dialogue there's a slight suggestion he's crushing on Padme, but I'd say that's really just an innocent child like crush, not a burning sexual attraction.

    why I don't agree with this
    1. This completely DESTROYS Obi-wan's character. The fact that he betrayed Anakin, who is like his brother, is horrifying
    2.The Skywalker's would be much weaker
    3.The "No, I am your father" quote would be ruined
    4. Padme is a QUEEN. Q U E E N
    5.Padme never requested a bodyguard. Palpatine did that for her. In fact, she didn't want one. Instead, she wanted to figure out who was trying to kill her
    6. Obi-wan is 11 years older than Padme, whereby Anakin is only 5 years younger
    7. Anakin would feel Luke wasn't his child
    8. Luke confirmed that Anakin was his father, and the force doesn't lie
    9. What about Leia?!
    10. Then what about the thing about "dying of a broken heart?" Then what killed her?
    11. This ruins the OT. Now, the scenes of Luke and Anakin and the way that Luke wants to bring Anakin back is no longer heartfelt and emotional
    12. In TCW, Obi-wan is shown CLEARLY in love with the senator Satine Kryze from Mandalore

      1 A little but Obi Wan was never the MOST honest guy in the world. He lied to Luke. He had lovers when he wasn't supposed to. He dealt with the most seedy people for info and favors all the time.
      2 Obi Wan was VERY strong with the force. Was a young Jedi Master and defeated a young Vader in 1 on 1 combat. Very Strong. He defeated Grevious 1 on 1 (yeah I know Mace hurt Grevious but he was still a beast most Jedi couldn't handle alone)
      3 Not if the twins had 2 different fathers and Vader fathered only Luke
      4 Queens and other people in power are the most notorious for affairs.. so what's your point?
      5 whatever
      6 Girls usually have crushes on older men not the other way around. 14=Puberty 9=playschool. I'm 12 years older than my wife. (yes she's way more than legal ;)
      7 See point 3
      8 See point 3
      9 Vader never sensed Leah as his daughter even when he spent hours interrogating her and he's known her for years. Hmmm.. Never calls her daughter. Just says Obi Wan's failure is complete. And really it was manipulation to get Luke to come out of hiding and fight. He know's Luke is his son after a few chance encounters and never close up until they fight in Empire. Vader's perception skills must suck with Leah.
      10 Dumbest line in the movie. Probably lots of dark side energy from Vader killed her. Also there are a variety of ways a mother can die in childbirth. Especially unprepared.
      11 This is actually in line with this whole argument. Obi Wan is the type to fall in love. Take a temporary lover and because of his Jedi code sever the attachment, leaving his lovers out to dry. Padme could have loved him and he her but he'd never commit like Anakin did. So Anakin was the one around when Obi Wan couldn't commit due to his Jedi "honor". People have been known to be in love with multiple people

      I never had any "lovers". I had a mutual attraction to Satine but that was as far as it went. I did not do anything with her or had a secret relationship with her. I would I never ever deliberatly disobey the Jedi code. When I was younger and rasher, I said I would leave the Jedi order for Satine because I would never live a lie to have a relationship with Satine while still remain a Jedi. I would do one or the other. I would die for the Jedi and I am am willing to die, do you really think my will is not strong enough tocontrol my own desires?

    You know it's funny, canonically, the age difference is way different. Anakin is nine, padme is fourteen, and obi wan is 25. so I see Anakin as the less creepy option. if I were to improve the prequels with only one major change, I'd do it by making Anakin fifteen. it'd be a nice homage to the original, and give credence to Luke and his very quick mastery of the force. it would also impressive other things. In episode one it could set up the very non creepy romance bit, it would give the council's initial decision more meaning (fifteen year olds are cocky assholes) it would make every single Anakin scene more believable, especially the accidental " I blew up the federation ship and won the war" thing. it would also shift the balance of the movie and dialogue so that he is more involved, and cutting out as much as possible of a certain unsavory individual.
    on to episode two. not a whole lot changes here, just make the time gap five years instead of ten, to accentuate his prodigy skill level, and to start a firm foundation with padme that is way less rapey, as instead of this weird cougar hunter thing, we can see a more mature, but fundamentally still cocky young adult, a real Han like character, with a lot more power that he takes granted and has fun with when no one's looking. As he wasn't really stunted by how young he left his mom, he isn't such a bitch, he had time before becoming a Jedi to get more world wise, and now instead of "I have to save my mommy" we get someone full of guilt, because at fifteen, he feels like there was more he could have done to save his mom, and it's a bit fresher in his mind. his relationship with obi wan is not too different, very junior cop to senior detective still, but makes more sense as the age gap isn't quite as large, and they've had the necessary closeness of age to develop a more equal brotherhood for episode three
    on to episode three. another five years pass, and while things aren't massively different, moms dead, he's secretly married, she's pregnant, he's found more equal footing with obi wan, but now instead of the weird emotionless to emotional mood swings he has cause he never had any real teenage development, he has some coping mechanisms, he's gotten to the point where he's ambitious. instead of the mess that was episode three, he advanced so quickly in the first five years to be a Jedi knight that he didn't quite understand why he isn't a master, and it's beyond his control, which makes him itch, he feels the need to be in control. he's chafing against the reins and that's the ultimate reason he turns, he wants to get more powerful quicker. not some fever dream of a dying padme, he just thinks he's the chosen one so he has to get more powerful. And his choice to turn should be earlier, something he hides from everyone from early on second act, and watch as they slowly realize it

    • @wallycarrott

      even so she never showed any interest in ob1 probably because she was busy trying to save the planet she was in charge of and he was a jedi, she may have thought he was attractive that that doesn't mean shit and its only conjecture, where as she was interested in ani from the moment she met him though not sexually for obvious reasons in fact it wasn't until episode 2 that she became sexually attracted to him and if he didn't pursue her so relentlessly she wouldn't of got together with ani at all as she was mature and logical for her age and did not like to fantasize about foolish things as being a queen and then a senator takes a lot of time and hard work leaving little room for things like boys and relationships. seriously wtf people the story is there if you didn't grasp it watch it again its not complicated, its really not.

    • @DrTimes99
      @DrTimes99 Před 7 lety +16

      Good idea. I would put him at 13 though instead of 15. It's the perfect age to not be a child, but still have zero control of your life. Additionally, it would keep him younger than Padme, an important fact in their relationship. Anakin, powerless at age 13 would meet a queen only one year older than him. Already, she would seem very mature to him despite the lack of a real age gap. This would be a driving factor in his development during his Jedi training over the next 5 years. Anakin would work hard to prove himself a mature Jedi the next time he met Padme. When he does in episode 2, he would be 18 and she would be 19. Anakin would think that he'd matured enough for her only to realize that he had not. He was still a cocky kid and she a respected Senator. Although the relationship/marriage would still happen, Anakin would harbor feelings of inadequacy, which would push him even more towards ambition and power.

    • @RuneForumwalker
      @RuneForumwalker Před 7 lety

      I'd agree with making Anakin fifteen in Episode 1, if for no other reason, for the fact that it would help to streamline the movie a bit more by taking out unnecessary plots in favor of expanding necessary character growth. What i mean by that is getting rid of Tatooine altogether and expanding the time they are on Naboo to start having the palace rescue mirror the Death Star rescue in A New Hope.
      I know, I know. TFA got shit on from aping ANH and Empire too much, but it all depends how how you do such things as if they ultimately work well.

      If we are going by actor-age, we have a 10 year old Anakin, an 18 year old Padme and a 28 year old Obi-Wan. So yeah, TECHNICALLY the age gap between Padme and Anakin is bigger, but still, a romance between the older of these two makes a LITTLE bit more sense, doesn't it?
      Besides, even if we assume Padme is meant to be a bit younger, it's still WAY more likely she'd be crushing on an "older guy" than on a child. And since the movies are supposed to be 10 years apart, she'd be in her 20's in the second movie regardless, which makes a theoretical relationship between her and Obi-Wan zero creepy.

    On a side note:
    If you think about it, Padme had the largest role in creating the Imperial Empire and allowing the Sith to win.
    A) It was her vote as a senator that ultimately gave Palpatine his executive powers, there-fore creating a galactic dictatorship.
    B) Her relationship with Anakin is what ultimately drove Anakin towards the dark side.
    - Had Padme not been in the picture, Palpatine would have not only been without a _second-to-none_ apprentice, but would not have been granted the power by the senate that he was.
    Makes you think if actually all along *she* was either Palp's apprentice, or at very least an agent of the dark side.

      also, had padme not been in the picture, palpatine would still be pulling anakin's strings like the gross, creepy puppetmaster he is.

    TL;DR This theory does not make the story better.
    Things that bother me about this theory:
    1. If Obi Wan is the father of the twins, he just didn’t give a shit about Leia.
    2. It ruins the parallels of Luke’s story to Vader’s, not to mention that is completely screws up Force Awakens. This means that family fucking up the galaxy is the Kenobi’s not the Skywalker’s. And Kylo Ren is actually worshiping his grandmother’s semi-love interest that has no connection to him at all.
    3. Obi Wan sleeping with his best friend’s wife is such betrayal to his character. And if Padme liked Obi Wan, she sure as hell is sending mixed signals to Anakin like going on romantic getaways, kissing him, marrying him in secret, sleeping with him, etc. What would be Padme’s motivation to manipulate Anakin if she wanted Obi Wan? Why would she “lose the will to live”?
    4. In Ep.I, their ages are Anakin 9, Padme 14, and Obi Wan 25. While it makes sense for Padme to have crush on a 25 year old, it’s pretty cringe worthy for Obi Wan to crush on a 14 year old. Padme and Anakin’s early friendship was just that, a friendship. Their platonic bond doesn’t change until 10 years later when Padme realizes Anakin got hot. (It’s like all the mothers that suddenly got the hots for Justin Bieber when he turned 18). Padme and Obi Wan’s relationship seems more like brother/sister.
    The prequels fine, just accept that Jar Jar is the Sith Lord that orchestrated the decent of Anakin.

    • @AnthonySforza
      @AnthonySforza Před 7 lety +9

      Perhaps it's one of those things where Obi Wan didn't know if the twins were his. So it's not that he didn't care about Leia, he just did what he thought was best for her and not having someone to take Luke, he thought it best to be keeping an eye on his maybe son. Which could be why he's so vague about such things. Unless... do you think they had like, medichlorine detectors, to tell who is someone's father? Like DNA?
      I don't know, I'm totally being devil's advocate here.

      To retort, with all due respect:
      1. This is a universe filled with deceit and secrets. "Thanks Obi-Wan, I appreciate you taking care of my one and only baby," is totally something that a Padme who lost everything would say to him before she slipped away to her second, even-more-secret-er kid.
      2. I actually think it should be a mystery for the whole series whether the kids are Obi's or Anakin's, makes things more mysterious! And confusing! Like the real world!
      3. I'm totally okay with the idea that Padme REALLY loved Obi-Wan, but got manipulated into marrying Anakin by his subconscious force-manipulation. And Obi-Wan is a total pimp, as evinced by Empress Satine.
      4. Padme and Obi can absolutely be friends in Ep 1 and secret/forbidden lovers in Ep 2.

      I've seen enough Steve Wilkos, Jerry Springer and Maurey to know that just because you think a kid is yours doesn't make it so. Regardless Kylo Ren is still worshiping his forefather sith. If you remember at one point in history all Spartans thought they had the blood of hercules, you must consider how how the passing of time effects what we know.
      I myself come from a family who's grandfather lied to my grandmother about his name and now he has great grandchildren that bare a last name that didn't exist before his marriage. I still use this name even if it is not proper to what my name should be.
      Whether being named Kenobi or Skywalker it does not change what or who Kylo Ren is from the perspective of his chosen actions, as I said earlier, he very well would worship Vader even if he was a Kenobi because he is darkside.

      No way. It makes it way better. Luke is Obi-Wan's child. Killing Obi-Wan didn't take away his anger, and attempting to kill Obi-Wan's son didn't either. So Vader hatches a scheme to surprise him at Cloud City and wear him down physically and psychologically so he could fuck with his head. He knew Luke's parentage would be in question, so just to be a bastard and really destroy his enemy's son and get a better revenge, he waits for a weak moment and then pounces on him by claiming to be his father. If you view all of it that way, it's so much more epic. Vader's motivations make more sense. Why would he want to try to kill his own son or fail to recognize him the first time he saw him? It's an elaborate revenge plot! Way more interesting.

      How does it actually make any sense to the story as a whole in any way?
      It doesn't make any sense at all on the ending of the movie certainly at all, it completely destroys those scenes.
      Then you have Yoda lying, you have a complete break of Kenobi's character, you have broke one of the biggest plot twists in cinema history, you have the kind of cheese the prequels were criticized for taken to a much further level, it retcons half the story and is really, really dumb. It destroys the story. It breaks Vader's progression, it breaks Kenobi's character, it destroys the main story that the entire universe is built around.

    • @chechong2439
      @chechong2439 Před 6 lety +1

      It would actually not break the story or characters if the twins had different fathers. Vader fathered Luke at the same time Obi Wan fathered Leah. Its biologically possible and only really destroys Padme's character a little. Obi Wan was never the most honorable Jedi Knight. He lied to Luke "stretching the truth". He was rebellious to the counsel. He had at least 1 other love affair. Padme's honor is in question here having 2 lovers but its not an uncommon thing at all. It would even explain a few things. Like why Vader figured out that Luke is his son after only a few chance meetings and not Leah who, being a senator, I'm sure he's had much more contact with. He interrogated her and never got so much as a sense that something was strange about her. When he figures out Leah is Luke's sister he says "Sister, you have a twin sister" He never uses the word daughter. He does mention Obi Wan's failure is complete. At most it might mess up Kylo in the new trilogy but we have yet to see what happens.

    He 'accidentally' made a masterpiece in 1977, he couldn't make lightning strike twice. He took a lot of risks and he had a little too much pride to cater to the old fan-base. That's it.

    The first two minutes of this video I notice this woman does not know what she is talking about. Number one: the age difference between Anakin and padme is at best 5 years. Compare that to Padme and Obi Wan which is at least 10 years, she is like 14 where as he is close to 30. Then she says well Padme suggested an old friend for her protection. She didn't suggest that was Palpatine. She actually didnt want protection at first. Enough, I dont need to watch the rest of this video.

    According to Lucas himself the original story was that Anakin did get jealous and expected an affair between Pad and Obi. Sadly in order to make it more kids friendly that was changed into the non-convincing story line presented in episode III.

    It could have been....
    ....but then all the Darth Vader "I am your father" thing with Luke would be false, ruining the good SW movies.....
    I think it's better to leave the prequels as they are, shitty but not Dangerous for the original Trilogy.

    • @subwucifer8739
      @subwucifer8739 Před 7 lety +2

      what if Vader wasn't sure though? what if he saw that there may have been a possibility that it was his son?
      women can often times get pregnant by two different men and have twins, each twin being the offspring of the mother and one of the two males.
      maybe Leia was anakin's daughter, maybe Luke was obiwan's son. this would explain why Vader might have felt more of an interest in finding Luke's sister when they were fighting in Return of the Jedi, it also explains why Luke and Leia look different from one another (not that people can't have twins with different hair colors). it also explains Kylo Ren being the grandson of Vader because he's the son of Leia.
      I think that if this theory were true, Vader thinking that Luke were his son might be explained by him reading the force incorrectly and mistaking him for his son when his actual kid was Leia. another supporting piece of evidence is Vader's interaction with Leia in a new hope.
      all I'm saying is that this theory is plausible and more entertaining when viewing the series as a whole. for me the story isn't ruined, it's only amplified by making it more of a soap opera, and that's what star wars is--a soap opera in space.

    • @blueorangeblossom
      @blueorangeblossom Před 7 lety

      Yeah I thought the same thing... The Gravity of the moment when Luke's hand is cut off...also obi wan wouldn't be such a great guy if he was f***ing Luke's mom...his credibility and character go out the window. He turns from an honorable knight to an adulterer...he isn't nearly as likable or trustworthy at that point. So; for me it is more likely that the two actors were just higher quality which stokes the fires of fans...bc of on screen chemistry- and it reveals the need to cast of a terrible actor in a way that explains his inability to integrate into the story or carry the weight of his character. Although plausible; it throws a giant seedy backstory that defiles the entire motivations of all the characters involved into a contempuous plot line in the minds of women with loose morals. Who lack the inability to see how a woman sleeping with two men at the same time ruins it for the rest of us. It was just a shitty movie

    • @subwucifer8739

      Mint Julep
      this is super petty and unimportant to what you were trying to say, well, not completely unimportant, but you don't know how to use semi colons and dashes properly.
      No one is saying that his theory is canon, obviously, it's just an alternative way of viewing a movie for those who can't bare the prequels. You are right, they were shitty movies. Everyone knows that,and with all due respect, I don't think you or anyone else in this comment section saying that the movies were just shitty movies and that there was no romance between Obi and Padme aren't adding anything to the conversation.
      Not that you aren't entitled to your own opinion, I just feel like it's a bit redundant and pointless to restate the obvious, it's redundant and pointless to restate what's canon.

    I like Anakin's confusión about all this during their last encounter when he sees Obi Wan and It all leads to a Shakespearean tragedy.
    As for the rest of the theory ... NOPE!
    Padme even told Anakin she loved him before they entered the prisoner's arena in case they might die, she said this even after his mad speech after his mother died, and she also went to get him back at Mustafar after he (presumably to her) killed younglins.
    She loved him allright.
