It's 40 years since Sir Bobby guided Ipswich Town to UEFA Cup glory in 1981. And he was in no doubt this was his greatest ever team when we filmed this classic interview on 1st August 1994 during the making of the official Boys of 81 documentary.

I live in Birmingham and became an Ipswich fan in 74/75 at the age of 10.To me Sir Bobby Robson was God. I remember going to watch the Town play at the local clubs and being in awe at the class Bobby had put together. The likes of Whymark, Mills, Mariner, The Beat, Wark through to the 2 Dutch masters Muhren and Thijssen.I still consider myself so fortunate to have been around to witness this amazing man and his teams.Thank you Sir Bobby for the memories that will last with me forever.

Bobby Robson and the lads were instrumental in helping my recovery from major spinal surgery in 1978 (after we'd won the Cup). I was in Addenbrookes, in Cambridgeshire. My uncle used to do the engraving for cup and such for visting foriegn teams. So Bobby was kind enough to let my uncle interview him and some of the lads. I played that cassette tape so many times in the months I was there, even thinking about it brings me to tears. I've supported my team through the good times and the bad, and always will. But to me Robson is the GOAT manager and Beattie the GOAT player.

He really was a hero to us Ipswich fans, and a true legend of the game. I loved him as a personality and he was the best motivator the English game has ever produced. Even a young Alex Ferguson watched Ipswich training sessions which was frowned upon normally, but Bobby allowed it. Years later of course it was Sir Alex who presented Sir Bobby with a lifetime achievement award. Loved and admired by so many, and truly one of a kind.

At the tender age of 11, I saw Town beat Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley in the FA Cup final. Made me a fan for life, and the following years were incredible. What a team! Cooper, Burley, Mills, Butcher, Osman, Wark, Muhren, Thijssen, Mariner, Brazil, Gates. Holy h..l, what a lineup. The heartbreak of losing the title two years in a row, winning the UEFA cup final, playing football that won everyone’s hearts. Robson was instrumental in making this team tick, fabolous years that will never be equalled again. As Robson said, «great love for those players, part of history». So true.

I met Bobby quite a few times as a younger man in my 20's & he was a genuine force for good. He was a good Midfield inside right & played for England 1957 - 1963 & in WC 1962. Magic!

Its n absolute travesty that Uncle Bobby only won two trophies at Ipswich. We didn't have cash to throw around. We didn't have the best facilities, the largest squad, the location isnt exactly a prize with some long ole hauls for away days almost every other week and had out backs to the wall a lot of the time. But by heck did we have a fighting spirit to raise a middle finger with one hand with a pint in the other hand and a cig hanging out the corner of out mouths and the Gaul to say "yeah... and wot?"
Hopefully this is something that our current squad are currently learning, this is the way we do things here in Suffolk

They were a truly exceptional side, full of ability, flair, skill, hard work and passion. But they ran out of steam and hit injuries. Crazy the amount of games they played - 65 - with just 12 first team players ! Ipswich beat Villa three times that season but Villa only played 40 odd games.
