- Custom hand painted Canvas for under $100. In this video, I painted my own canvas for my photography studio much like Unique backdrops, Gravity backdrops or Oliphant backdrops that cost up too 8X more to create a Vanity Fair magazine styled shoot.

Best video I’ve seen yet on this subject!! Love the final look, exactly what I’m going for. Going to try this with a few colors :)
Appreciate you watching, appreciate it. Check out some of my other videos for more tips!
This is the best video I’ve seen on painting canvas for backdrops! Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate it, I tried my best to be detailed and use quality but inexpensive things.
Awesome results. Thank you for sharing this!
This is great! I can't wait to try this for photoshoots and music videos! Thanks for the great video!
Its been working great! Please let me know how its goes.
Definitely trying this. They look great!
Did you ever create the canvas? Would love to see how that came our
From one 'Eddie' to another... Brilliant!👌🏿This video is exactly what I have been looking for. I'm gonna try it and let you know how it goes 👍🏿
Hey man, did you ever get this done?
ohhh very nice i put in my favorite video ^^ thks for share.
Ecellent video! I will try some small canvases to use as table tops for food photography (to start with).
That's a great idea. Let me know how that turns out
Well done!
Appreciate it 🙏🙏🙏
This backdrop is really beautiful. I was looking for something similiar but I couldn`t find any good tutorial. Your video is great!
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it!
I definitely want to try this but smaller for flat-lays! I think adding baking soda or sand to some of the paint would add an amazing 3D texture
Good luck and let me know how it turns out!
Muy buena la explicación. Gracias
Gracias por el Apollo
WOW.. THATs great..
very cheap option to buying a new already made backdrop ..
Nice vid and backdrop
Thank you!
Hello best video ever ! I want to try it now!
What type of canvas is this the 7oz or the # 12
Best DIY one I've seen so far. Is it possible to paint a different color on the other side to get more use out of 1 canvas?
Thank you, really appreciate it. I would say yes. I didnt try it since I didnt use a primer, the paint leaks through the other side a bit but im sure it's possible.
Hey Eddie, great video. Have you noticed any cracking or flaking of the paint since you’ve been rolling it?
None at all
Appreciate you I was thinking. About just buying one but it doesn’t make sense
Yea, I would add a step now. I would prime the canvas before painting because the paint got sucked up quickly and I had to layer twice on the base paint
Looks great! How’s your backdrop holding up today? Did you use any Primer?
The back drops have been holding up great I did not use primer but looking back I should have and because some spots are a little see through but do not show up in pictures
Thanks for the video! One question : if I see that I want to remove something which I already applied, can I use a sponge and water and fix it?
That would blend it in with the surrounding colors. I would wait for it to dry and paint over it a bit.
Eddie, I really appreciate your information, it helped me a lot, keep going, maybe you could do to sell. I will try to do one for now, to see how it goes, thank you and take care.
My pleasure! Where are you located?
Love the video....did you mention the paint finish or the style of paint that works best for your backdrops
It was recommended to not use anything with gloss in it. I ended up with some sort of Matte finish. I linked it in the bio
@@EddieMerino I just subscribed...keep inspiring
Did you let the base midnight blue coat dry before you started dabbing lighter colors?
Not really, it absordes very fast.
I had a lot of creases, same type of canvas... any ideas why? And what to do about them? I don't think you had any. Thanks for the video, the best on the subject 😀
Did it come folded? Mine came in a role so I didn't have to deal with that. You can always steam it. Before you paint it of course.
Cool video. Thanks for sharing. What kind of finish did the paint have? Matte or satin, eggshell maybe? Do you find if you run your hand across the canvas it that the paint gets a grey cast or is the paint locked in place? Is the canvas very stiff or easy to work with? Did you add sealer on top of the paint? Have you find the canvas gets dirty quickly? Have you tried spot cleaning it?
I used Matte, it doesn't become grey when touched and the canvas is very flexible but still tough. I've had it for over a year now and have used it about 15 times and store it in my closet so never gets dirty. I haven't cleaned it but will let you know if I ever do.
@@EddieMerino Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.
Awesome video!! How are you storing the backdrops after painting?
I put them on a 3 inch pvc pipe and stand it in a closet.
@@EddieMerino ok, so you can roll them without making the paint crack? Are they still ok after 1 year?
Any suggestions about different kind of paint?
Very very useful video, thank you!
@@alessandromontanari7817 They are still in perfect condition. The 3 inch PVC pipe doesn't only keep them from wrinkling or tearing, its also used for the backdrop stand holder and 2 clamps on one side. The paint I used works fine and I recently used it for a shoot, you can check out my Instagram for a video on a recent shoot. IG @EMMultimediacorp
Awesome video. Can u please tell whats the size of the backdrop u showed in this video, the dimension of the finished product?
The size was a 9ft backdrop and I cut 6 ft and hung it the long way. You can also roll the 9ft as long as you want. That's why getting 10 yards in length is so important. You can costume any size
What type of paint? Just regular latex? Flat, eggshell? Very tempting to diy one
I used a Matte paint so I wouldnt get any shimmer when I used flash
Ah I can see it much easier on my PC than my phone. Thanks.
I've been wanting to make my own for a while now, but went out and bought a drop cloth from Home Depot and figure I'd see what it'd turn out like if I were to let it soak in a bucket of paint and water mix. Heavier on the paint than water. Ring it out let it dry and iron out the wrinkles and add splotches/texture after. I'm hoping that letting it soak would be a faster way to apply the overall background color. It's in the washer now to knock out the creases and loose fabric. I'll let you know how it turns out!
Interesting, you should make a video if it turns out how you like it and please send me the link. I would love to support
Hi Mike...that's a super cool idea. Thought along that line too. It's a great idea if you plan to use one material for one colour. Apparently i would want to make a 2 sided canvas backdrop so i can have two different looks on one material. Please do keep us updated on how yours goes. Thanks
Mike Morris Did it work?
@@QOJOQAY Good point
Great video. I know results will vary but could you list the paint colors you used?
Sure, the company is called Bear Paint and the base color was Midnight Blue, Naval blue and I can't remember the lightest one but they have Swatches at the store and you can even mix your own custom colors. Good luck, let me know how it turns out
Thank you
@@EddieMerino
What exact type of paint did you use? Latex or acrylic? Im from argentina so I cant open the link you post. Thanks!
If you make sure the paint is not Glossy, you should be fine with anything. What I would've done different is use Primer first so the paint sticks easier and I don't have to use so much paint. But all in all, its still standing strong.
what is the metirial of canvas. Is there eny special name or something ? And what is the paint that use?
I added the material in the description. Its canvas from Duckcanvas.com and the pain is any kind of matt paint (so it doesnt shine)
@@EddieMerino thank youuuuuu very much :)
What are the specs of the roll you got including length?
N12-96#12/96" Cotton Canvas Duck10
What tipe of paint did u use? Is it acrilic?
No simple matte paint
is the paint waterbased or oil?
It’s just paint for walls. Oil would take too much time to dry. So water based I guess.
Could I just buy the canvas from Home Depot? Excellent video, btw. Thanks!
Im actually not sure of the quality difference but Big Duck Canvas is meant to be painted on and last a long time. I would much rather spend 2 hours on a quality canvas than one that may wrinkle and tear in a few months
Eddie Merino Thanks for the reply.. you’re right. I’ve decided to go with big duck.
what type of paint you used?
BEHR matte finish
@@EddieMerino thank you
What is the size of this background?
I have to double check but I bought a long one because I wanted to test different technics of painting. Its 30 yards in length and I think 9ft in wide. So I use the 9 ft as the height and cut width to my looking
@@EddieMerino Thank you very much for your earlier reply. Such a background can be rolled on a role? To lower them downwards on the backdrop attachment system? And will latex matte paint be good and will not crack?
@@mateuszzzdrew didn't even mention it in the video but after it dried I rolled them up in a 2 inch pvc pipe I got from home depot and cut the pre using a hacksaw to fit the backdrop length and I taped one end to it before rolling it and a few pieces of tape sheet rolling it so it doesnt unroll. As fast as latex paint, I'm not sure brother
@@EddieMerino How long did it take to apply the second coat before the first black coat? (with White paint and a sponge)
@@mateuszzzdrew not long, maybe 20 minutes
Got mine from Savage and a Russian corp of artisans who do it by hands
Feel free to share the link
I need the name of that company again, because Duck Canvas wants almost $900 for a roll, not $80.
I just check and they sell the #12/94" for $9 a yard. You can get 10 yeards with $90
Not enough texture.
You can add more by adding different colors and use different brushes
