    Having the bottom part of the door as a hard slick surface is actually a good thing since the area is quite often kicked as people exit their cars. Soft surfaces tend to be more delicate to kicking.

    I adore my '22 xc40 ultimate configuration. An absolute pleasure to drive. I've had it for two years now- about 18,000 miles and I haven't noticed any battery/range deterioration, yet. The little trash bin is actually quite nice (I usually stuff receipts, gum wrappers, etc). My few complaints on my xc40: The infotainment gets scorching hot to the touch if left in direct sunlight. It will burn your fingers. I'm not sure why the "cooling infotainment" function doesn't kick in sooner. Personally, I think the infotainment system is not as attractive as the Polestar's look. Someone else in the comments also mentioned the lack of sensitivity with the wheel during adaptive control- I have to really firming grasp the wheel for it to recognize that I am holding onto the wheel. The suspension is quite stiff (compared to Audi E-tron at least) and I feel the cabin is not as quiet as the gasoline xc90/60s.

    We have 2023 xc40 ultimate version USA.
    It has 1,300 miles on it to date.
    I sort of like the car but there are problems:
    1. Interior glass gets coated in a chemical film causing me to clean the inside of the windshield frequently (I think it may be caused by plastic’s off gassing).
    2. The car has a plastic smell on the inside (we have plastic floor mats).
    3. I’m 5’10” and can’t really get 100 % comfortable in the drivers seat.
    4. With 20” wheels the car is rough riding.
    5. The climate system shut down completely because of a software bug.
    6. The car went into the shop after only 80 miles on the odometer because the engine went in limp mode (took a week to have repaired).
    6. Climate controls are a pain when driving.
    7. Harmon Kardon sound system is ok but brittle sounding.
    My suggestion is to consider these areas before buying one if these cars.

      It's a well thought out car indeed. Also the divider in the boot fold it and hang some bags on the hooks so they won't fall over. It's nit the best EV for longer trips because of range but it's good enough to go longer distance.

    Great review and I own the XC40 MY23 SM, which I really enjoy driving. What annoys me most though is auto pilot's detection for hands on the steering wheel. Holding the steering wheel is insufficient and you really have to pull on the wheel every 10 seconds or slightly pull it on one side all the time to keep the alarm from going off and interrupting your music. It seems the same issue is still present in the '24 model, that's a shame.
    And then there's AAOS... we just got CZcams and Vivaldi after years of waiting which is a huge improvement, but there still is a lot to catch up on compared to AA. I really wish Google would provide more apps and support for reading WhatsApp, Signal messages like AA has had for years. Development for AAOS seems very slow so until it's on par with AA, they should just give us AA in our Volvo's. According to my dealer that should happen in Q1 '24, but I highly doubt it.

      @autogefuehl  Před 11 měsíci +1

    I think the C40 makes little sense. If I wanted something more sporty looking I'd get the Polestar 2, which is the same platform, and which I got for myself. But yes, I think the XC40 Recharge is a smart choice. Its also a classic compact SUV shape, kinda like the older VW Tiguan which I prefer over the current bloated Tiguan (which lets be honest, is a totally different size class than the old one).

    • @pomssi1
      @pomssi1 Před 11 měsíci +2

      We were considering the PS2, XC40 and C40 and ultimately went for the C40. The Polestar just felt way too cramped in the front, the center console takes up so much space compared to how open the Volvos are. Of the two the XC40 is definitely the more practical one on paper, but the C40 is practically the same car with a worse rear view, which didnt bother us.

    I know you this Thomas….
    but to be correct you have to mention the frontal area, it’s even more important than the CW value.
    If I have understood it correctly the CW value is more about how aerodynamic/slippery the shape of car is considering its frontal/cross section area.
    The polestar 2 is a lower car, having less air to push through, while also having a more aerodynamic shape.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  Před 11 měsíci +4

      actually, the front push is not as important as the rear drag. We'll also soon give a wind tunnel insight special feature on this to you!

    Interesting that Volvo used to claim FWD was safer, where under steer catches drivers but at the expense of driving fun and performance . Now they and Polestar have switched the current model xc40 and Polestar 2 to RWD and RWD biased AWD. I suppose the weight distribution no longer puts so much at the front but rather a lower COG wit battery packs. Very glad for these changes!

  • @stefanocalio9
    @stefanocalio9 Před 11 měsíci

    Thomas, just wondering if you had past experience, in previous teet drives of the car, of a very annoying vibration issue that several previous models suffer from and that hopefully they sorted out with this model year.
    Many a XC40 (twin engine and single engine alike) give an annoying vibration when accelerating between 95 to 115 km/h, unfortunately mine included. Volvo acknowledged the issue and is supposedly looking for a solution (there's a tech journal available), but assuming it's drivetrain related, it may be not present with the new RWD version.
    Wonder if you've been (un)lucky enough to have driven one of them in the past and can compare?
    Great review as always, by the way! (And yeah, the trashcan gets some use every now and then on mine lol)

Are WLTP range measurements calculated using 'one pedal drive' mode? Volvo website gives 571 km WLTP range in my configuration. I'm expecting a real range from 440 to 480km with no more than 110km/h on highway scenarios.

    I'm all for better industrial animal treatment, but I don't get why you play into the "animal free" marketing scheme. It's plastic. Plastic is so much worse a problem. That these EVs frequently used recycled plastic helps, but barely any plastic is actually recycled. Organic materials with some asterisks is far better for our future than continuing to produce plastic of any kind. Please stop doing free PR work for the plastic industry. You don't even have to take my stance, just stop shouting out "animal free" as some unquestionable positive, or add "but none of these are plastic free" in balance.

      Ideally they would use natural fibres like hemp, bamboo, denim etc, that new vegetable waste based leather and so on.
      Plastic is OK as long as you don't burn it or throw it in the ocean, but should really be limited to long term applications, thays thr benefit of plastic. And ideally made from the recyclable type polymers. It's better than an animal sourced materials in terms of cruelty, and environmentally due to methane output of animal farming, and deforestation to grow feed.
      I suspect though we'll see lab's grow leather and wool very soon of they can do meat now. But the leather tanning process is still very damaging to people and habitats. There are videos where rivers fizz like Coca-Cola... not good.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
      You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at czcams.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/video.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.
      A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: czcams.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/video.html
      And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: czcams.com/video/6vXePQi_MAk/video.html
      New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: czcams.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/video.html
      More and more natural materials are rising: czcams.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/video.html
      Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: czcams.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/video.html
      For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: czcams.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/video.html
      Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
      In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse?
      We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

      @geoffsmith8172 Před 11 měsíci

      @@autogefuehl Hey, thanks for the reply and your time. But fundamentally I think you're only looking at point of production, when we need to look at whole systems and cycles. While animal use ought to be more ethical, it is part of an ecological cycle. Plastics, recycled or plant-based, are not. It doesn't matter if you turn water bottles into a seat for a bit, it will wind up in dumps and the ocean. So I agree, I'm all for natural fibers, too. But ultimately, you're only calling out the negatives of one option and not the other, skewing the facts. You could at least call out both. This sort of hard lined animal rights is aesthetics focused and is literally a plastic industry marketing strategy. I can get if you want to be animal free, so you're right to make the same call outs where they use fabric, but plastic is not better.

      The seats shown contain 70 % recycled PET and 30 % wool. My point is that the 30 % wool doesnt do any good (seat gets hot and scratches pale skin) and that the other seating materials are superior to this choice. Yes, a pure plastic based seat is better in every respect in this case. If you want to exactly know why, we are at this moment preparing an extensive feature on this with a lot of background information.
      Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic.
